Sandra “Oh My Gosh” By: Payge Silvis

On Sunday, January 6, 2019, star Sandra Oh had the honor of taking home the Golden Globe for best actress in a television series. Oh becomes the first Asian-Canadian and first actress of Asian descent to take home the award since 1981 when Yoko Shimada won for her role in Shogun. Earlier that very same day she made history by becoming the first ever person of Asian Descent to host the Golden Globes. There were many other actors and actresses of Asian Descent nominated for Golden Globes in various films and TV shows this year including Constance Wu for her role in Crazy Rich Asians and her same movie being nominated for Music or Comedy motion Picture of the year making it the most times that a solely

Asian-American film has been nominated for the most prestigious awards of the night.

Oh is best known for her role as Christina in Grey’s Anatomy and previously received a Golden Globe in 2006 for best supporting actress in a series, miniseries or motion picture made for television for her role. Oh also could be seen in The Princess Diaries and many other movies, and tv shows. When Oh’s name was announced, she quickly rushed out from the wings of the stage and made an emotional acceptance speech. Oh went on to say, “Mostly, there are two people here tonight that I am so grateful that they are here with me. I’d like to thank my mother, and my father,” She concluded her speech by telling her parents that she loves them in

Korean and then bowing respectively to her parents and her father bowing in return.

The main reason that Oh winning is making such a big splash in Hollywood is that of the lack of Asian representation in the media and in big motion picture today. Oh’s win at the

Golden Globes and her success in media over the years has inspired many minorities to pursue their dreams in Hollywood and media. Lydia Roberts, a freshman from PHS said “I was happy because not many Chinese people get recognized. Mostly it’s Americans who get recognized more than anyone.” Many celebrities have been showing support after Oh’s win including Lana

Condor, , and Mindy Kaling all noting the recent and amazing changes in media and the bigger change that they see coming in the future. 2018 showed great strides in the representation of many groups not only including Asians, but African-Americans being represented with the release of Black Panther, the Latino community being represented with the release of Coco, and the LGBTQ+ community was greatly represented this past year in Love, Simon, along with women also making great strides this past year with many making their directorial debuts in TV and movies.
