National Collecting Scheme Scotland National Collecting Scheme Scotland is an initiative that supports public collections across Scotland to acquire and present challenging contemporary visual art. The initiative also seeks to enable curators within those organisations to extend their knowledge and understanding of contemporary visual arts, and to develop their engagement with the visual arts sector in Scotland. Scotland is home to some very fine public collections, which are of local, national and international significance. It is the aim of the NCSS that those public collections are able to reflect the range and vibrancy of contemporary art created here and abroad, that they can help build new audiences for the contemporary visual arts, as well as engage and work with artists and visual arts organisations. Some facts : • NCSS is an initiative of the Scottish Arts Council. • Currently NCSS has seven museum partners. These are Aberdeen Art Gallery, McManus Galleries, Dundee, Edinburgh City Art Centre, Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, Hunterian Art Gallery, Paisley Museum and Art Gallery, and the Pier Arts Centre, Orkney. • In its first phase - 2003-2006 - NCSS enabled a total of 122 acquisitions by six public collections (including craft in its first phase). In 2007-2008 a further 18 works of visual art have been acquired. The Scottish Arts Council will support further acquisitions in 2008-2009. • NCSS member were also involved in an innovative joint commissioning project – the first of its kind in the UK. They collaborated to commission Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan to create a substantial and ambitious new work of art for Scotland • Aberdeen Art Gallery hosted the Scotland & Venice exhibition December 2007- January 2008. -

SUMMER 2015 Newberry Seminars Chicago Culture Best Addresses: Notable Residential Streets in Chicago Tuesdays, 6:15 – 7:45 pm June 9 – August 4 (class will not meet July 7; we will meet from 6:15 – 8:15 pm on June 16) Through a series of walking tours, we will explore some of Chicago’s best addresses—streets known for significant domestic architecture, influential residents, or notable historical events. Experiment 25 (2019) 328-345 brill.com/expt Artists at Play Natalia Erenburg, Iakov Tugendkhold, and the Exhibition of Russian Folk Art at the “Salon d’Automne” of 1913 Anna Winestein Executive Director, Ballets Russes Arts Initiative, and Associate, Davis Center at Harvard University and Center for the Study of Europe at Boston University [email protected] Abstract The exhibition of Russian folk art at the Paris “Salon d’Automne” of 1913 has been gen- erally overlooked in scholarship on folk art, overshadowed by the “All-Russian Kustar Exhibitions” and the Moscow avant-garde gallery shows of the same year. This article examines the contributions of its curator, Natalia Erenburg, and the project’s instiga- tor, Iakov Tugendkhold, who wrote the catalogue essay and headed the committee— both of whom were artists who became critics, historians, and collectors. The article elucidates the show’s rationale and selection of exhibits, the critical response to it and its legacy. It also discusses the artistic circles of Russian Paris in which the project origi- nated, particularly the Académie russe. Finally, it examines the project in the context of earlier efforts to present Russian folk art in Paris, and shows how it—and Russian folk art as a source and object of collecting and display—brought together artists, collec- tors, and scholars from the ranks of the Mir iskusstva [World of Art] group, as well as the younger avant-gardists, and allowed them to engage Parisian and European audi- ences with their own ideas and artworks. The Newberry A nnua l Repor t 2019–20 30 Fall/Winter 2020 Letter from the Chair and the President Dear Friends and Supporters of the Newberry, The Newberry’s 133rd year began with sweeping changes in library leadership when Daniel Greene was appointed President and Librarian in August 2019. The year concluded in the midst of a global pandemic which mandated the closure of our building. As the Newberry staff adjusted to the abrupt change of working from home in mid-March, we quickly found innovative ways to continue engaging with our many audiences while making Chair of the Board of Trustees President and Librarian plans to safely reopen the building. The Newberry David C. Hilliard Daniel Greene responded both to the pandemic and to the civil unrest in Chicago and nationwide with creativity, energy, and dedication to advancing the library’s mission in a changed world. Our work at the Newberry relies on gathering people together to think deeply about the humanities. Our community—including readers, scholars, students, exhibition visitors, program attendees, volunteers, and donors—brings the library’s collection to life through research and collaboration. After in-person gatherings became impossible, we joined together in new ways, connecting with our community online. Our popular Adult Education Seminars, for example, offered a full array of classes over Zoom this summer, and our public programs also went online. In both cases, attendance skyrocketed, and we were able to significantly expand our geographic reach. With the Reading Rooms closed, library staff responded to more than 450 research questions over email while working from home. -

I’m John Fenn, and I’m here with my colleague Stephen Winick. Steve Winick: Hello! John Fenn: We’re both folklorists at the American Folklife Center here at the Library of Congress. I’m the head of Research and Programs, and Steve is the Center’s writer and editor, as well as the creator of the Folklife Today blog. Steve Winick: And today, we’re joined by several guests from the AFC to talk about an online collection of ours, the Chicago Ethnic Arts Project collection. This was the first of AFC's historic field projects, and the collection was digitized and then made available on the Library of Congress’s website just about two years ago. And a lot has been going on with it since, so, we've asked some of our colleagues to help us talk about it. Our first guest is our coordinator of Processing, Ann Hoog. Hi Ann! Ann Hoog: Hello! John Fenn: Ann, you know the collection quite well since you were involved in getting it ready for public online access. Where do we start? Ann Hoog: Well, let me first say that I do know it fairly well, but it is such an immense resource that I am still learning new things about it! But a good place to start is with the type of collection that it is – meaning, how it came to be. As you can tell by its name, the Chicago Ethnic Arts Project collection, represents materials from a cultural research and documentation project, or survey, that was undertaken in 1977. -
