4 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES 2 ONE HUNDRED EXPERTS TO BACK YOU UP

More than one hundred experts are waiting for your call, ready to listen and advise. Our phone service is free for members and we respond to roughly 50 000 inquiries each year. Whether you need a tax guru or a data security expert, we will redirect your question to the right person. Read more about our free phone advice line on the next spread.

3 WE HELP YOU TO COMPETE OVER THE BIG EUROS

The procurements of the public sector in Finland amount to roughly 35 billion euros per year. That is how much trade is available for businesses each year. Municipalities and other public bodies are valuable references, particularly for new enterprises. So they are worth competing over. If a municipality invites enterprises to tender for e.g. catering or maintenance services, we provide advice on how to enter the bidding competition. Our local public procurement advisers know their region and can help to set up a meeting with the representatives of the municipal procurement department. They also provide help if you are not familiar with the European Single Procurement Document – the ESPD form – which is required in larger projects. If you need help with public procurement, contact your regional organisation. The contact information is on page 42 of this guide.

Despite this, Kuronen started receiv- ing invoices, reminders and debt collec- tion letters. The phone calls continued as well. “I decided to contact the FFE advice line again. I heard that I was not the only entrepreneur who had received such calls.” “The advice service put me in touch with a lawyer who helped me to prepare a complaint. I would not have been able to do that on my own.” In 2011, the case was brought before the court and Kuronen was one of the claimants. “It was a long and heavy road; I have never spent as many sleepless nights as back then. 10 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES 11 TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE MORE

When we ask our members about the most useful thing about the membership, the most common answer is the networks. Networks are an entrepreneur’s social capital, which can never be too high. Both new and more experienced entrepreneurs occasionally encounter problems that can be hard and dull to figure out on one’s own. FFE events allow you to meet other entrepreneurs, potential partners and clients and decision-makers who are relevant in terms of your business or your company’s domicile. The Federation of Finnish Enterprises is the largest business federation in Finland and we have accumulated an impressive number of contacts along the way. We offer all of them to our members to use. Whether you have a specific problem, a need to find entrepreneur colleagues working in the same field or a desire to speak with a decision-maker in your municipality, we will help you to find the right person.

12 RELAXATION AND FUN COMPANY

Entrepreneurs, too, need to chill out and enjoy good company. The FFE’s legendary cruises and local events from a raspberry carnival to theatre evenings must be experienced at least once. And you will definitely want to come again.

It happens every December. The whole of Enonkoski is bursting with energy when the local association, Enonkosken Yrittäjät, organises the traditional “Joulukohinat” event. “Joulukohinat” is a jumble sale that has been organised annually for more than ten years. Local entrepreneurs not only get to meet each other, but also sell their products to locals. More than one thousand people visit the jumble sale each year, which is pretty good in a municipality of less than 1 500 residents. The roughly 400 local associations of the FFE represent their respec- tive localities in terms of compo- sition and size. Local openings of the summer season and training events bring entrepreneurs togeth- er to have fun, learn new things, form networks and meet regional decision-makers. Our 20 regional organisations make sure that the local associations, run by representatives, do not fall short in terms of strength. Our 64 trade associations improve our means of engaging in trade-specific advocacy work and also guarantee that there are always like-minded people around. Whether it be Enonkoski, or something in between, we are national, but we are also local and close.

13 14 EXPERIENCED MENTORS GET YOU STARTED have any. In the autumn of 2017, we launched our first national mentoring programme, where 60 young entrepreneurs from around Finland receive guidance from experienced board professionals. Created as a joint effort by the Young Entrepreneurs and the Boardman network, the programme includes several joint meetings for all participants. In addition, the mentor and the mentee meet once a month or every two months. The requirements were fairly simple: enthusiasm towards developing as an entrepreneur, the desire to pursue company growth or the need to overcome a challenge. The mentor and the mentee decide together on whether the need for support was related to e.g. management, board work or a generational change, and proceeded accordingly. We also organise local, open, low-threshold mentoring events where mentors provide tips and new ideas for your activities.

Her long experience of sole proprietor- ship has shown that the best parts of the role are also some of the downsides of working alone. “The best part of this is being your own master. Depending on the industry, you can fairly freely organise your schedule any way you want. But this is also one of the down- sides of being a sole proprietor, because you also have sole responsibility. If you are going through a difficult time in your life, there is no-one you can call, but you have to navigate through the situation yourself,” ponders Uitto-Kohonen. 18 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES 24 LEARNING NEW THINGS IS EASY AND FUN

For once, the entrepreneur has managed to organise the schedule so that they can take part in a training event. During the day, something happens to them. The stress of work is forgotten, and the entrepreneur visibly gets excited about learning new things and meeting new people. They begin to understand that the time spent here will be sure to pay for itself many times over. At the end of the day, the entrepreneur asks: “What is the next training event that would suit me?” This is the kind of feedback that we at the FFE aim to receive. A changing world and operating environment require constant updating of knowledge and skills. That is why we organise training and other events specifically tailored for small entrepreneurs and their employees. Our regional organisations and local associations keenly listen to entrepreneurs in their own locality and organise training events around topics relevant to them. We guarantee that learning new things will be easy and fun with us.

25 WE BRING TRAINING SESSIONS TO YOUR HOME

You are sitting on your sofa at home, watching the trainer and a bunch of other entrepreneurs learning about a topic on screen. The trainer explains how Google AdWords works and how it could benefit your company. That does not sound so difficult, does it? In just over an hour, you know a lot more about keywords and campaign optimisation. Time is of the essence to an entrepreneur, so we organise about 40 training webinars each year. In practice, this means that you can learn new things whenever and wherever suits you best.

62 REASONS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FFE 19 26 DIGITAL LEAPS FOR ENTREPRENEURS

Studies show that digital tools are strongly linked to the success of SMEs. Digital tools are most effec- tively utilised by successful, growth-oriented com- panies who have already established a strong mar- ket position. And vice versa: companies engaging in digital business have a much stronger urge to grow than others. However, digital tools in themselves do not guar- antee bliss. According to a study conducted by the FFE, digital tools do not have an impact if the com- pany does not possess an in-depth understanding of its business processes and analyse them con- stantly. Potential is seen in the digital world, but competence, time and money pose obstacles. This is how it often goes. The entrepreneur has a strong urge to get even more out of digital tools, but they feel unfamiliar and even slightly scary. In the flood of digital dialogue, it is difficult to filter out where you should start and what is relevant for your com- pany in particular. We do not only talk about digitalisation. We organ- ise compact, effective training events focusing on e.g. search engine optimisation, digital work en- vironments and cyber security. 20 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES 27 CALCULATORS THAT MAKE DECISION- MAKING EASIER The calculators on the yrittajat.fi website allow you to calculate e.g. how much hiring a new employee would cost and how much more sales you need to generate so that a particular discount rate will be profitable.

62 REASONS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FFE 23 COMPANY STORY Photo: Vesa-Matti Väärä

ntrepreneur Markku Peltola from Loimaan Konepaja Oy woke up to reality a year ago. E “I realized that digital tools genuinely transform the operating environment of companies. Before then, I did not even know what digital tools mean.” Around that time, Peltola’s eyes fell upon a no- tice advertising a digital school for entrepreneurs. “Before then, my skills were very inadequate. The digital school truly opened my eyes.” Peltola has two metal works companies, both of which employ less than ten people. Previously, they were developed using fairly traditional methods. “As our business gradually expanded, I real- ized that we need more than just e-mails and Of- fice tools. We have now introduced enterprise re- source planning systems and e-invoicing. This also involves data security issues.” Peltola has noticed that a digital approach also provides many new tools for marketing. He thinks that every company should find out more about them. “We are now well on our way to introducing new digital tools. We are constructing product cat- egories and adopting tools that make cost monitor- ing easier. E-invoicing also makes invoicing much easier.”

“EXAMINE BOLDLY” Many entrepreneurs are now where Markku Peltola was a year ago. Digital tools may provoke many un- answered questions, especially if one’s own know- how and skills are lacking. “My own starting point was that both of my companies were dying. I did not have anyone to continue them. Business development had always been a half-baked effort.”

24 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES Digital Machine Workshop Entrepreneur

At best, the FFE digital school can arouse an entrepreneur’s interest towards digitalisation. This is what happened to a machine workshop entrepreneur from Loimaa who did not even have a home page before then.

Neither of Peltola’s companies had a home page. One of them had an e-mail address. “It was good to start climbing up from nothing. There are many similar compa- nies in Finland,” says Peltola. Peltola sat in the digital school for en- trepreneurs with 30 others and listened to things that sounded strange at first. “I would say that it is worth partici- pating if you have a chance to do so. 26 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES 36 ONE FOR ALL

An entrepreneur cannot protect his or her interests alone in the drafting of legislation. That is why we do it on behalf of all entrepreneurs. Like the musketeers used to do. Advocacy requires persistence: preparing official opinions, writing statements and sitting in law drafting teams and ministry hearings. We do this so that, year by year, Finland would be a better place to be an entrepreneur.

37 WE ARE AT THE CENTRE OF EVENTS

Whether it be the social welfare and health care reform or the provincial, 38 working hours legislation or some GENUINE PATH other reform, we make sure that TO INFLUENCE MPs, ministers and other decision- makers know how to ensure the Call or write to us and tell us what success of entrepreneurs now wrong needs to be corrected. We and in the future. will drive your cause forward.

39 WE CLEAR THE OBSTACLES ON THE WAY OF LOCAL AGREEMENTS

Imagine a small company that is not part of an employers’ association. A long-term employee would like to work extra hours during the high season and then go on a longer trip. The entrepreneur would be fine by this, but the law or the collective labour agreement does not allow them to make such an agreement between themselves. Finally, the entrepreneur has to hire more helping hands from a subcontractor whose employees have to be separately familiarised with the work. We believe that if a workplace has a common will when it comes to organising work, the regulations of collective labour agreements should not present an obstacle. This is a message that we promote among decision-makers, whether it be working hours, wages or different compensations.

62 REASONS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FFE 27 40 WE KNOW YOUR MUNICIPALITY

Our regional organisations and local associations operate close to municipal decision-makers, provincial federations and federations of municipalities. They are familiar with the local councillors with an entrepreneurial background and bring forward the regional entrepreneurs’ perspective when the municipality makes decisions that affect the life of entrepreneurs. Municipal councils have more than 2 000 entrepreneurs. We make sure that municipalities take entrepreneurs into account in procurement and town planning and help to create networks.

41 WE CAN DEAL WITH THE BIG BOSS TOO

In July 2016, the Commission presented a legislative proposal regarding land use, land-use change and forestry. The so-called LULUCF Regulation left the Parliament’s Committee on Environment towards a direction that would have had harmful consequences also to SMEs involved in the forestry chain. Our office in Brussels rolled up its sleeves and got down to work: it took part in the EU discussion surrounding the issue, contacted Members of the Parliament and worked in cooperation with other Finnish organisations, the EU office of the Nordic forest owners’ organisation and the European umbrella organisation of SMEs, UEAPME. The representatives of the FFE were there, on the spot in Strasbourg, when the EU Parliament’s plenary session voted in favour of a much more positive option from the perspective of Finnish entrepreneurs. The sleeves have not yet come down, because the case is not over. One might say that EU lobbying is not a sprint, but a marathon, but at least we will not run out of endurance. EU decision-making has a direct or indirect impact on all of the companies in member states. This is why we remain constantly alert.

42 WE BLOW OUR ENTREPRENEURS’ OWN TRUMPET Did you know that for several years in a row, Finland has been in the top three countries in the world to do business in on the European Chamber’s list? We work in order to keep Finland there. Or actually, in order to put Finland in the lead.

28 THE FEDERATION OF FINNISH ENTERPRISES 43 WE REDUCED ENTREPRENEURS’ SICK DAY WAITING PERIOD

The four-day sick day waiting period of entrepreneurs meant that especially small entrepreneurs have had to work also when they are sick. We prepared a detailed proposal to the government, including calculations, and met with key decision- makers multiple times, emphasising the importance of the issue so much that they may have already become slightly bored with us. In the spring of 2017, the government finally proposed that the period will be shortened to one day. Starting from next year, entrepreneurs can finally stay at home when they are sick instead of losing their income entirely during brief sick leaves. WE CAN DEAL WITH THE BIG BOSS TOO

44 WE FIGHT ON BEHALF OF EQUAL TAXATION

One of our biggest goals in terms of the Parliament on Arkadianmäki is that everyone would be treated equally in terms of taxation – including enter- prises of different shapes and sizes. We had demanded an entrepreneur de- duction for a long time, which would make the taxation of small enterprises more equal to that of limited companies, as these could already previously enjoy the benefits of a corporation tax deduction. Finally, from the beginning of 2017, we received a five-percent entrepreneur deduction, which concerns roughly 200 000 self-employed people and one-man companies.

45 MORE IS MORE

We already have 105 000 member companies and it is thanks to them that we can influence the legislation on behalf of entrepreneurs. The more of us there are, the stronger we will be. If you are not yet a member, by all means, join us now. It will make our muscles even bigger. www.yrittajat.fi/en/liity
