That is how much trade is available for businesses each year. Municipalities and other public bodies are valuable references, particularly for new enterprises. So they are worth competing over. If a municipality invites enterprises to tender for e.g. catering or maintenance services, we provide advice on how to enter the bidding competition. Our local public procurement advisers know their region and can help to set up a meeting with the representatives of the municipal procurement department. They also provide help if you are not familiar with the European Single Procurement Document – the ESPD form – which is required in larger projects. If you need help with public procurement, contact your regional organisation. • The Auteurial-National Nexus and Aki Kaurismäki's Finland Trilogy
“Our Aki” The auteurial-national nexus and Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland trilogy Sanna Peden Bachelor of Arts (European Studies) Honours This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities European Studies 2012 Abstract This thesis explores the interconnections of ‘Finnishness’ and ‘Kaurismäkianness’ in and around Aki Kaurismäki’s so-called Finland trilogy: Drifting Clouds (1996), The Man Without A Past (2002) and Lights in the Dusk (2006). The thesis addresses how Kaurismäki, whose work and public persona have tended to be critical of national institutions and preoccupations, has developed into an increasingly national figure in Finland’s years of Europeanisation. In order to examine the links between ‘Finnishness’ and ‘Kaurismäkianness’ I establish, first, the way in which Kaurismäki’s films engage with national themes; and, second, the way in which this Kaurismäkian take on Finnishness is received and further appropriated in Finland. I provide a textual analysis of each of the focus films, paying particular attention to their national aspects and their references to Kaurismäki’s other films. I combine this close analysis of the film texts with discussion of the context of the films, their media presence and ‘afterlife’, for example the discourses surrounding the films after their initial release or the ways in which their ‘Kaurismäkianness’ has been appropriated by others for specifically national purposes. In seeking to understand how Kaurismäki’s auteurial engagement with narratives of Finnishness feeds back into Finnish society this thesis contributes to current debates about the relationship between auteurs and national identity.

  • Found Objects in the Films of Aki Kaurismäki
Readymades, Rejects and the Ready-to-Hand: Found Objects in the Films of Aki Kaurismäki LAWRENCE D. SMITH ABSTRACT: This article considers the role of found objects in the work of Finnish film maker Aki Kaurismäki. Acknowledging the legacy of such objects in 20th-century art and performance inaugurated by the “readymades” of Marcel Duchamp and Dadaism, this article focuses on the concept of Zuhandenheit (ready-to-hand), the meaningful employment of objects in relation to living in the world. Kaurismäki’s use of found objects, both within the diegesis of various films and in the making of the films themselves, is compared to the existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger, specifically in relation to that philosopher’s concerns with how human beings “dwell” in post-World War II Europe. Kaurismäki has many connections with mid-century existentialism, and his creative employment of found objects in constructing his films creates a distinct cinematic realm frequently called “Aki-” or “Kaurismäki-land.” Found objects prove to be indispensable in creating the distinctive style of the films, serve as plot elements, furnish the mise-en-scène, provide material links between the various films, and, as in Zuhandenheit, are utilized to address Kaurismäki’s fundamental concerns with dwelling in the real world, as well as in Aki-land.

Introduction Thomas Austin The cover image for this book, taken from Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The Man without a Past, 2002), captures the arresting moment when the protagonist M (Markku Peltola), hav- ing been violently beaten and robbed, then pronounced dead by a doctor, rises from his hospital bed to resume his life, but as a homeless amnesiac. By the end of the film, this penniless Lazarus has found a place to live in a marginal but supportive community, a ro- mantic partner, and a job as manager of a rock band. Like many of Aki Kaurismäki’s films, The Man without a Past is a socially engaged work that complicates realist aesthetics, em- ploying a self-conscious and highly allusive style. It is both a political response to pressing issues of inequality and injustice in neoliberal Europe and a playful utopian fable. Over the past three decades, this distinct approach, centred on ludic interventions that are simulta- neously serious and comic, relayed in a style that combines mimetic and performative modes,1 referentiality and artifice, realism and anti-realism, has made Kaurismäki a vital auteur in European cinema. Yet his oeuvre, encompassing 17 feature films, two music documentaries, a television movie and numerous shorts, remains surprisingly under-re- searched in Anglophone scholarship. This collection aims to redress such neglect, and to interrogate the politics and aesthetics of his compelling body of work, from Rikos ja rangaistus (Crime and Punishment) in 1983 to the film which may be his last, 2017’s Toi- von Tuolla Puolen (The Other Side of Hope).2 It would be easy to stereotype Kaurismäki’s films as drily humorous dramas populated by taciturn underdogs, presented in a predictable style that recycles particular techniques and eschews others.3 (The former would include: a largely static camera, underplayed perfor- mance style, ironic tone, and a soundtrack comprised of early 1960s rock and roll along 1 with Tchaikovsky or Shostakovich.) But this is too simplistic.

  • Signs of Pictorialism in Aki Kaurismäki's Films
BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2015 / VOLUME 3 / ARTICLE Article Slowly Moving Bodies: Signs of Pictorialism in Aki Kaurismäki’s Films JARMO VALKOLA, Tallinn University, Estonia; email: [email protected] 44 DOI: 10.1515/bsmr-2015-0023 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2015 / VOLUME 3 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT Aki Kaurismäki is arguably the best-known Finnish fi lmmaker, owing largely to his feature fi lms such as Crime and Punishment (Rikos ja rangaistus, Finland, 1983), Calamari Union (Finland, 1985), Shadows in Paradise (Varjoja paratiisissa, Finland, 1986), Hamlet Goes Business (Hamlet liikemaailmassa, Finland, 1987), Ariel (Finland, 1988), The Match Factory Girl (Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö, Finland, 1990), I Hired a Contract Killer (Finland/ Sweden, 1990), La vie de bohéme (Finland/France/ Sweden/Germany, 1992), Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatiana (Pidä huivista kiinni, Tatjana, Finland/Germany, 1994), Drifting Clouds (Kauas pilvet karkaavat, Finland, 1996), Juha (Finland, 1999), The Man Without a Past (Mies vailla menneisyyttä, Finland, 2002), Lights in the Dusk (Laitakaupungin valot, Finland, 2006) and Le Havre (Finland/France, 2011). A large body of his work has been made in Finland, but also in countries like France and Great Britain. Besides feature fi lms, he has also made documentaries and short fi lms, as well as musical fi lms with the group Leningrad Cowboys. In a broader context, Kaurismäki has a unique place in Finnish and international fi lm history, as well as in media and communication culture. Kaurismäki’s cultural context includes elements that have been turned into national and transnational symbols of social communication and narrative interaction by his stylisation. The director’s cinematic strategy investigates and makes choices evoking a social understanding of characters that has special communicative value.
