Finally, but most importantly, I express my deepest appreciation to my family back home in Japan, especially my parents お父さん and お母さん who believe that education is their best gift to their children, and have always respected and supported my decisions from my childhood. vi Abstract The aim of this research is to examine transition pathways to employment of young Indonesian men and women between 1997 and 2014. Longitudinal Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data are used to investigate these pathways among cohorts of young people aged 15-29 years as at 1997 in the context of demographic changes. Although Indonesia has the largest economy and youth population in the Southeast Asian region, the country exhibits high youth unemployment. This research provides important insights into youth employment for both men and women, examining their transition patterns and life course experiences. The results of this research show that educated men with high school or higher qualifications steadily moved into service sector jobs, while men with junior high school and lower educational attainment faced more fluctuations. Women experienced a range of transition pathways but mainly fall into four transition patterns. Women with tertiary education continued to work without much interruption due to marriage, while those with less than tertiary education usually stopped working. The results of estimating women’s working life expectancy show that tertiary educated women had the longest lifetime working durations. Working women with junior high school and less educational attainment had the shortest working life expectancies despite their early entry into the labour force. These findings support the human capital theory that education has a stronger influence on work expectancy than previous work experience. Life course theory provides a useful framework to cover many factors involved in the young people’s pathways. This research contributes to understanding the employment pathways for men and women. Haley School of Law A sweeping proviso that protects basic or fundamental interests of a legal system is known in various names – ordre public, public policy, public order, government’s interest or Vorbehaltklausel. This study focuses on the concept of Indonesian public order in private international law. It argues that Indonesia has extraordinary layers of pluralism with respect to its people, statehood and law. Indonesian history is filled with the pursuit of nationhood while protecting diversity. The legal system has been the unifying instrument for the nation. However the selected cases on public order show that the legal system still lacks in coherence. Indonesian courts have treated public order argument inconsistently. A prima facie observation may find Indonesian public order unintelligible, and the courts have gained notoriety for it. This study proposes a different perspective. It sees public order in light of Indonesia’s legal pluralism and the stages of legal development.

Birnir Department of Government and Politics What explains the variation in ethnic conflict in federal systems? Existing theory and empirical evidence are mixed, with some saying it decreases violence, and some saying increases it. This puzzle also leads to a number of research questions: why does federalism fail to resolve the problem of violent ethnic conflict? Why does local ethnic politics in federal units frequently lead to violence within the ethnic group? What effect does federalism have on violence between ethnic groups? Why do central governments intervene with force into local interethnic conflicts rather than simply allowing the local government of the federal unit to resolve the issue? Conversely, why does federalism sometimes work in preventing violent conflict and session in countries where ethnic politics is salient? The theory presented here asserts that the level of intraethnic political compe- tition within the national minority/local majority and the political incentives created by devolving power to the local level determine the answers. I develop a new theory of local ethnic outbidding by minority groups in federal systems which explains how local ethnic politics turns violent when intraethnic political competition is high. Previous theories have focused almost exclusively on national level politics and vi- olence and have largely ignored the subnational level. I also explain how central governments become involved in local ethnic conflicts in federal systems, because local minorities being targeted call upon them for assistance.

While prior studies have examined factors associated with return migration following disasters, an area that remains relatively underexplored is whether moving home to one’s original community results in improved health and well-being compared to other options such as deciding to move on. In the present study, our objective is to explore whether return migration, compared to other migration options, results in superior improvements to mental health. We draw upon data from a cross-sectional pilot study conducted 16 months after a series of volcanic eruptions in Merapi, Indonesia. Using ordinal logistic regression, we find that compared to respondents who were still displaced (reference category), respondents who had “moved home” were proportionally more likely to report good mental health (proportional odds ratios (POR) = 2.02 [95% CI = 1.05, 3.91]) compared to average or poor mental health. Likewise, respondents who had “moved on” were proportionally more likely to report good mental health (POR = 2.64 [95% CI = 0.96, 7.77].

In consequence 9 percent of adolescents experience unwanted pregnancy and 5 percent of them suffer for sexual transmitted diseases symptoms (BPS, 2012). The mixed of taboo discussion of condom use, limited access and limited adequate IEC material for never married adolescent had put Indonesian male youth at high risk of unsafe practice. However, there are some of male adolescent who use condom as safe sex practice. Therefore, the study aims to investigate factors affecting condom use at last sexual intercourse among never married male adolescent in Indonesia. Using secondary data from 2012 Indonesia Youth Adolescent Reproductive Health Survey, this study focus on male youth population for less indication of under reporting data. Total of 1,368 never married male adolescent aged 15-24 years old that has been engaged to premarital relationship are selected for this study.Further, logistic regression analysis for nonlinear probability model show that the past behavior of condom use is a strong predictor of condom use at last sex.
