    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo Exorcising the Illusion of Bon “Shamans”: A Critical Genealogy of Shamanism in Tibetan Religions By Zeff Bjerken (College of Charleston, USA) n descriptions of the Bon religion in Tibet by western missionaries, Itravelers, and scholars over the last century, the term that has become most associated with Bon is “Shamanism.” Shamanism has been used to re-name what is widely regarded as Tibet’s primordial native religion; its endurance as a category demonstrates a need to designate the indigenous religion in familiar western terms. There is a deep longing felt by many scholars, both past and present, to recover Tibet’s silent origins, to identify the tracks of Tibet’s prehistoric religious development, and then to discover whatever modern manifestations might exist on the margins of Tibet. This longing exerts a powerful pull on the imaginations of Tibetans and Tibetologists alike. In introducing his study of the myths and legends of ancient Tibet, Erik Haarh expresses his own fascination with exploring Tibet’s uncharted territory: Studying the ancient Tibetan concept of life and death means intruding upon virgin soil. This feature of old Tibetan culture is, indeed, so utterly unknown and unexplored, that the ideas which have been advanced above, in the first instant may even appear with the cast of chimera…. Very few Tibetologists have ventured forth to explore, even superficially, this blank spot on the map of ancient Tibetan culture and history.1 Haarh’s description of the pre-Buddhist period as a “blank spot” on the Tibetan map might seem apt when one considers the paucity of archeological and textual evidence available today about pre-Buddhist Tibet.

    THE "CALLING," THE YETI, AND THE BAN JHAKRI ("FOREST SHAMAN") IN NEPALESE SHAMANISM* Larry G. Peters Westwood, California The ban jhakri (jungle/forest shaman) of the Himalayas is a spirit, a god of the shamans, and a creature said to be partially human. They are sort of gnome, yoda-type figures, tricksters, and shamanic teacher/initiators. The banjhakri is the Nepali name given to the smallyeti (three to five feet tall) whose red or golden hair covers his entire body except for face and hands. According to legend, ban jhakri live in forests and caves and kidnap young candidates, typically between seven and twenty years of age, to initiate into shamanism. Only those youths who are chokho (pure) in body and heart are retained for teaching, ideally for thirty days, before being returned to the place from which they were initially abducted. Candidates with physical scars or impure hearts are released quickly, often violently "thrown" from the ban jhakri' s cave, or worse, captured by his big and ferocious wife, the ban jhakrini, who desires to cannibalize the young initiate. The focus of this paper is the intimate connection between the shaman's "calling" in Nepal and those liminal figures of the ancient forests, jungles, mountains, and caves known as the yeti and the banjhakri: These anomalous characters have an overlapping cultural mythology: they are indigenously believed to be spirits but also current­ living vestiges of the ancient past, with a physical appearance and presence, who also manifest in dream and trance states. Thus they coexist in two realities which interpen­ etrate and are not separated in Nepali consciousness.

Tribhuvan University Prithvi Narayan Campus, Pokhara Email: [email protected] Abstract: The 1990 restoration of democracy in Nepal has taken a new direction in Nepali writing in English. Though Nepali writing in English was pioneered by Laxmi Prasad Devkota in the 1950s, it took its momentum with the publication of Samrat Upadhyay’s Arresting God in Kathmandu (2000) and Manjushree Thapa’s The Tutor of History published in 2001. They were followed by a flood of other Nepali writers, promoting new trends of English writing in Nepal. The present article, thus, aims to help describe and understand the development of English writing over the decades beginning from the 1990, a period of political change till date. The article also lists Nepali writers and their works in English and English translations since then, annexing a bibliography to area classifications of the genre. In order to meet this study’s objectives, the researcher has adopted a quantitative approach, using descriptive research method as a tool to survey the works in English by Nepali writers. Horses were the mounts that provided transport, particularly for the nobility and kings, allowing them to travel more quickly and comfortably. Horses were also used for hunting, postal services, and to build a cavalry for warfare. In addition, they played a role in various entertainments, including horse racing, games, and parades. The unusually large number of manuscripts on horses attests to the value of horses in the Tibetan imaginaire compared to other animals that lived in the company of the people on the High Plateau, in Tibet itself, and in Tibetan cultural areas. This article begins with an outline of the uses and benefits of horses in Tibetan culture. It touches upon the animal’s role as the mount of Tibetan kings and debates regarding horses’ mental faculties. Then it presents a survey of the content of various manuscripts on equine studies based on sources from three stages: (1) the earliest Tibetan sources from Dunhuang; (2) translations from Indian texts; and (3) extensive compendia that merges all of the knowledge on horses available at the time of their composition. It analyzes the style and content of books that indicate the approach of the authors to the topic of “horse” and points to their view of horses in relation to Tibetan culture and Buddhism.
