Chevaliers, Ladies, Brothers and Sisters: When I visited Denmark this past February, I notice that at the Installation of Officers in one Canton, charges were given by memory This is my last article to all of you as the General Commanding. and when I visited there Department Council it was also done without A main concern of mine is the proposed merger of the Patriarchs use of the printed book. In one Department, I acted as an Council throughout my visits these past three years. It has been an officer to make it easier for them to open. This is sad. August at Schaumburg, Illinois for our annual session. After visiting the various Departments and Associations, it is apparent that the new proposed ritual, which has been sent to all Chivalrously, Adjutants and Secretaries – who in turn mailed it to the Cantons and Auxiliaries, in many cases is still laying on the Clerks and Secretaries desk (or in their brief case). We must see that these are put into the hands of the members for them to use in a joint meeting and return Gen. Jerald T. Sarnes their comments. There have not been very many corrections, proposed General Commanding changes or comments to the revised ritual received.

By HENRY C. HEDGES, Past Grand Master.

CHAPTER I. JURISDICTIONS OF THE EASTERN MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND THE GREAT LAKES

Illinois. In 1836 Samuel L. Miller, who had been made an Odd Fellow in Columbia Lodge No. 3, of Baltimore, Maryland, and had become a past grand before his removal to the West, with others, petitioned for a lodge to be located at Alton, Illinois, and Western Star Lodge No. 1, was instituted August 11, 1836, under a dispensation; but the charter was not granted until the October session, in 1836, of the Grand Lodge of the United States. Brother Albert G. Wolford, who was Deputy Grand Master, in 1873 and Brother James E. Starr, afterward Grand Master and Grand Representative, were among, if not the earliest initiates. In March, 1838, , Past Grand Sire, started on his travels, west and south; and, after visiting several cities in different states, went to Alton, Illinois. June 20, 1838, he instituted Alton Lodge, No. 2, and from Alton went to Greenville; found a number of brethren, among them James Clark, a past grand, formerly of Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, (Virginia Lodge No. 1) ‑ and, after instructing them in the work, received from them a petition for a charter for a lodge to be known as Clark Lodge No. 3, but the proposed Lodge was not then organized. Wildey went to Vandalia, proceeded to Springfield, and thence to Jacksonville, where he received a petition for, and instituted, Illini Lodge No. 4, on July 20, 1838. He then passed up the Mississippi river to Dubuque, and went to Galena, Illinois,

(Continued from page 16) where he found Brother John G. Potts, ‑ who had been Grand Master of Pennsylvania, in 1829,‑and fourteen others, from whom he received a petition for, and instituted, Wildey Lodge No. 5. Returning to Alton, he instituted the Grand Lodge of Illinois, Au- gust 22nd. The first Grand Master was Samuel C. Pierce. The membership probably consisted of the five grand officers, and the two past grands admitted after the organi- zation. November 27, 1838, the Grand Lodge met, but only Nos. 1 and 2 were represent- ed. Some business was transacted. Clark Lodge No. 3, at Greenville, was granted a dispensation, December 31, 1838, and there is, also, a record of the admission of a rep- resentative from No. 4. Up to November 25, 1839, meetings of the Grand Lodge ap- pear to have been held; but, at the session of the Grand Lodge of the United States, in September, 1841, the Grand Sire reported the virtual dissolution of the Grand Lodge of Illinois, “by the neglect of its members.” District Deputy Grand Sire John G. Potts, however, was in charge of the lodges. No. 1 ceased to exist in February, 1840, and No. 2 became defunct shortly thereafter; but Sangamon Lodge No. 6, was instituted at Springfield, May 19, 1840, under a dis- pensation. In 1841 the Grand Lodge of the United States granted permission for the removal of the place of meeting from Alton to Springfield, ‑ the only subordinates then in existence being Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6. There is no satisfactory data as to the member- ship or their number, up to this time. There is no record between November 25, 1839, and March 16, 1842. It is quite apparent that some friction existed, ‑and great exception was taken to Alton as a place of meeting. After an interval of two years, three months, and twenty days, the Grand Lodge of Illinois was reorganized, and, thenceforward, its prosperous career began.

(Continued from page 1) Listen: I mean truly listen. Turn off your judgment box and just receive the words of a friend or family member. No advice required. Simply be there for someone. You don’t need to voice your opinion. Simply listen.

Perform a Random Act Of Kindness: This was recently a theme at a school. All were amazed at all the acts of kindness. Go out of your way to do something nice for someone, expecting nothing in return. Hold the door for someone. Compliment (and mean it) someone’s appearance. Tell someone how much they mean to you. Do something that’s expected of you without being ask. How many random acts of kindness can you do? — Give out the blue ‘Make a Difference’ bands to those who make a difference in your life.

Serve: Do some community work. Volunteer at an elderly home. Teach something. Do some physical labor. Give your time for the benefit of others (the world).

Give Away a Book: I can’t tell you how many books I have given away. I love sharing my favorite books with people. Why should you be the only one benefiting from an amazing book. If you’ve just read a great book, pass it on!

Tell A Joke: We all enjoy a good laugh. Tell someone a joke; hopefully it will make them laugh!

Free Food: What better way to help somebody than to give food. Share a cake or loaf of bread as the ‘Nine Nanas’ have done.

Live Your Life: Find your mission and live it. Like to paint? Paint. Like to write? Write. Do what makes you happy. Unleash the purpose-driven-you.

Now is the perfect opportunity to change the world. The question is: Will you? Let us know what you have done.

INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS Membership Committee “A PROGRAM OF THE SOVEREIGN GRAND LODGE AND THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REBEKAH ASSEMBLIES TO OBTAIN MEMBERSHIP GAINS IN ALL UNITS OF ALL BRANCHES OF THE FAMILY OF ODD FELLOWSHIP”

July 2013

Greetings our Brothers and Sisters,

This will be our last Membership message as our terms will be completed as of August 24th. We have tried to bring you some positive messages and to share some of the programs that our Order has available to our members, we hope in some small way we have achieved that goal.

This year your Leaders challenged you to bring in one new member, many tools to assist you achieve this goal were offered, such as information material, DVD’s, Membership Chairmen to come at your request to hold a Membership Seminar. It is disappointing to report that very few of the tools were utilized, in fact most of the Membership Chairmen were not called upon for assistance or to hold a seminar.

As the Officers of the four Branches of the Order traveled throughout North America this year, we continually encouraged our current members to try to increase membership in their jurisdictions. We are sad to report that in spite of our efforts, we are still experiencing losses at a frightening rate. We cannot sit back and let “Joe” or “Mary” do it – we ALL must pull together – it is a fight for our survival as an organization. We, your Leaders, can offer many suggestions of ways to accomplish this goal, but you must find the niche that works for your area and then use it to bring in new members.

There is a dot on the horizon, that dot is a new member waiting to be asked, all we need to do is to connect the dots. We congratulate the Units who have found that dot and are looking to find more

We thank you for the opportunity to have served as your membership chairmen this past term. Remember to “Make A Difference by Celebrating what’s Right with our Order”.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Charles L. Renninger, SGM, Co-chairman Laura Argue, President-IARA, Co-chairman

Greetings To All Odd Fellows and Rebekahs,

By the time you receive this issue of our, I.O.O.F. NEWS, we will have completed our sixty-third year of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs United Nations Pilgrimage For Youth Tours. To those Jurisdictions who sponsored delegates this year and to those Jurisdictions who made contributions to our program to help us keep delegates fees at a minimum, I say “Thank You”. To those Jurisdictions and lodges who took time to prepare meals, provide lodging, furnish members to be tour guides along the way and provide admission fees for some of our tours; we appreciate your participation and know that our delegates were provided for by dedicated Brothers and Sisters. This program continues to be a success every year due to your continued support and commitment. It is too late for you or your lodge to sponsor a delegate for the 2013 Odd Fellows and Rebekahs United Nations Pilgrimage For Youth Tours. However, it is never too early to begin working towards sponsoring a delegate for next years’ 2014 tours. Likewise, it is never too early to make a contribution to our United Nations Educational Pilgrimage For Youth Inc. Look for the next issue (September - October) of our I.O.O.F. NEWS! In that issue you will find information about delegate fees and tour leader fees for 2014 along with the deadline dates for submitting non-refundable holding fees, as well as the deadline dates for the balance of delegate fees and the completed delegates registration forms including all required documentation for each delegate. Remember paper work is to be submitted in duplicate including registration form, color pictures, color copies of Pass Port Information Page, Proof of insurance, both, in your country and out of country. Speaking of Tour Leaders - This year we had three first time tour leaders and assistant tour leaders, who did and outstanding job. We also had tour leaders who have served before. If you think you might be interested in applying to be a Tour Leader or serve on the New York Staff, for 2014, check out our web site at www.unpilgrimage.org to obtain an application. Those application need to be mailed to the address of the Executive Director. I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming sessions of The Sovereign Grand Lodge and International Association of Rebekah Assemblies in Schaumburg, Illinois. Be sure and stop by our booth if you have any questions and we will be glad to give you the answers or find an answer. Come See Us! As many of you are aware, I will be retiring, due to health issues, at the end of August, after our Sovereign Grand Lodge Session. I want to say to each of you how much I have enjoyed working with you and your jurisdiction as we together have worked to provide an educational tour of a life time for deserving young students. Together, we have touched the lives of many young people and hopefully made a difference in their lives. It truly has been a blessing as well as a rewarding experience for me. I urge each of you to continue supporting this worthwhile program. Join with me in supporting the new executive director who ever that might be. They will need our, yours and mine, continued support to make this program continue and grow.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Michael Dutton Executive Director
