PREAMBLE In inversion of the Barry mythos, which prototypically starts at the end, this opening seeks to trouble the beginning, the image of the middle- aged James Barry that frames my book. The ‘real’ James Barry, I argue in this study, cannot be reconstructed because from the very outset the his- torical personality disappeared into the myth and its shifting, sometimes simplistic, at other times more multi-layered representations of whatever ‘James Barry’ came to signify for the specific cultural, gendered and socio- political contexts of the period. A striking illustration of the submersion of documentary sources in the omnipresence of the mythos is provided by the portrait of the dignified and self-possessed Barry featured in neo- Victorian life-writing both here and elsewhere. Resident in nineteenth- century Cape Town, this James Barry is not the military surgeon who is the subject of this volume but a wine merchant and member of the Legislative Assembly at the Cape.1 He is, however, the Barry of my imagi- nation; the Barry who captures the historical moment of my own time. This is how I envisage Barry: fully embodied and supremely at ease with his identity. Ultimately, then, all cultural representations of Barry speak potently to the myth-making powers of neo-/Victorian biographilia. vii viii Preamble NOTE 1. PREFACE This book took shape a civilisation ago. It was 2015, and James Barry had been born into his afterlives a century and a half earlier. The British Empire had long dissolved, or so it seemed. I enjoyed my trans-European, hybrid Continental-British identity even more than Barry appears to have enjoyed his hybrid/transgender self. Having grown up in a firmly European cul- ture, I had turned into a committed internationalist during my university years and especially my studies abroad. My elective affinities with British culture and Anglophone literatures, above all my passion for the Victorians and the first women’s movement had long settled me in my second home country, where I had by then lived and worked for the longer part of my life. Academically, I had moved across several disciplines (Modern Languages, Women’s Studies, English Literature) and different universi- ties in two of the four nations of the UK as it is currently constituted. Perhaps it was this experience of straddling languages, cultures, nationali- ties, disciplines, and (in intellectual, imaginative ways) time periods that drew me to Barry. But it was not until 2016, when completing the first draft of my book, that I started to share Barry’s sense of utter alienation and anger in the face of the enormity of the irresponsibility and dishonesty of the prevailing powers. That is when I realized that the world and values I had considered to be unassailable and self-evident had ceased to exist. Raised in Ireland, educated in Scotland, and trained in England, Barry crossed several continents in his postings to multiple territories (the Cape Peninsula, Mauritius, the West Indies, St Helena, Malta, Corfu and Canada). In doing so, he bestowed dignity on the position of citizen of the world before this identity came to be disparaged as ‘unpatriotic’ and subversive ix x PREFACE in the words of a (then) unelected Prime Minister. As a medical officer of the British army, Barry operated from within, yet in his unswerving defence of the rights of Othered individuals and groups of people remained resistant to the imperial mindset, a worldview that has resur- faced with such atavistic force in our own time. When he saw indigenous female patients subjected to abuse by male hospital attendants, he appointed a black matron. Incandescent, he stepped in to stop the institu- tionalized brutalization of prisoners and leprosy sufferers. It was this determination to call out injustice, cruelty, corruption and professional misconduct wherever it occurred that led to his court-martial, from which he emerged fully vindicated. If he were to live today, Barry would scoff at the mindlessness (and worse) of those who want to Make Us Great Again and Take Back Control by breaking away from our nearest neighbours and our shared histories and rights cultures to return to the toxic delusions and violations of a Glorious Empire. He would lobby for sheltering children displaced by war and stand up against hate speech, refugee vilification, detention camps, night-time deportations, ethnically motivated family partition and racialized travel bans. He would be appalled by the ethical, intellectual and emotional impoverishment and rising fundamentalism at the heart of our brave new world. His life was a political statement. So is ours, and the afterworld will judge us. Cardiff, UK Ann Heilmann 29 March 2017 ACKnOWLEDGEMEnTS It is a convention of James Barry life-writing to refer to the irresistible allure of this extraordinary personality and story: once encountered, so the trope goes, they possess and haunt the biographilist for evermore. Barry, as I explore in this book, touches a nerve in our thinking about sex and gender. While the roots of my interest go back to my early work on Victorian feminism, in particular the New Woman and fin-de-siècle cross- dressing narratives, my entanglement with Barry himself began with Patricia Duncker’s James Miranda Barry and the research into biographies and earlier biofictions that it inspired, resulting in a conference paper on ‘Doctored Lives’ in 2005. Since this coincided with a change of post, the new curriculum took over, and I did not get back to Barry until one of my PhD students devoted part of a chapter of her thesis on ‘Neo-Victorian Impersonations’ on the subject; I am grateful to Allison Neal for the long conversations we had, not least about the tricky question of pronouns. Another professional move inspired me to return to my expanding Barry archive in 2012 for a plenary lecture at a workshop on ‘Gender, Genre and Identity’; this focused my attention on the conceptual connections between Barry’s gender crossing and the genre crossings of Barry life- writing. By then I knew the subject deserved further development, but again other demands and commitments intervened. That is why, when I started preparing a keynote in 2015, I decided that this time I would write the article before the actual paper – and ended up with 18,000 words. When following the conference I presented my work-in-progress to col- leagues, hoping for advice on how to condense the over-long essay, the unanimous suggestion was to extend it into a short book. In the drafting xi xii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS process, as more and more source material caught my notice, this project grew into the current monograph. It is tempting to conjure up parallels with Barry himself: maybe that’s how it all started, as a temporary adven- ture, and then it became the life. But that, of course, would mean indulg- ing in the representational self-constructions of biographiliacs that this study seeks to investigate. Writing this book became an adventure – and like an adventure it was beset with difficulties, predominantly those that pertain to mystery tales.

Barry's MD thesis, in Latin, was on hernia of the groin.' As its epigraph it had a quotation from the classical dramatist Menander, which urged the examiners: "Do not consider my youth, but whether I show a man's wisdom."2 No one spotted the real meaning of these words, and Barry proceeded to walk the wards as a pupil dresser at the United Hospitals of Guy's and St Thomas's under the tutelage of Astley Cooper. In January 1813 Dr Barry was "examined and passed as a Regimental Surgeon" by the Royal College of Surgeons of London.3 Thus began a career that was to span almost halfa century and take in halfthe globe and was to culminate in the rank of inspector general of hospitals in the British army.4 A revelation James Barry's life and career have since provided inspiration for several literary works, including bio- graphies,35 at least four novels,6'0 and two plays." 12 The cause of this interest is not difficult to find.     Nomadic Transgender Identity: Patricia Duncker’s James Miranda Barry and Wesley Stace’s Misfortune Georges Letissier (University of Nantes, France) Abstract: Neo-Victorian fiction is concerned with retrieving the past of marginalised, ostracised figures. Transgender characters – whether historical or fictional – have been the subjects of two significantly different fictions: Patricia Duncker’s James Miranda Barry (1999) and Wesley Stace’s Misfortune (2005). After a short reminder of the artistic treatment of transidentity in the nineteenth century, this article explores the ways in which these two contemporary novels set out to represent characters who do not fall squarely within pre- established sexual and/or gender norms. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s notion of “nonce taxonomy” (Sedgwick 2005: 23), i.e. maverick classifications of desire, physicality and subjectivity that interfere with hegemonic processes of naming and defining, helps to negotiate the complexity of transgender experiences through fiction writing. Whilst Duncker refuses to pander to the scopic drive of the voyeurism inherent in the reading experience through a poetics of obfuscation, Stace does not baulk at resorting to the sensational breaching of the past’s taboos, in an age of sexual overexposure. Ultimately, both novels, notwithstanding their major differences, propound an image of the nomadic identity of transgender. Look, you have forgotten the cat, I say. Virginia Woolf (The Waves, 1931) By all accounts it now appears that James Barry – the British Army doctor – was actually a woman named Margaret Ann Bulkley. Thus, Dr. James Barry was the first woman medical Dr. James Barry practitioner, albeit in disguise, in England. (1792/95?–1865) In November 1809, Margaret Ann Bulkley when she was a teenage girl of 15-18 years changed her name to James Barry so that she could study medicine. Barry qualified with Medical Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 1812 and attended the Autumn Course 1812-1813 at the United Hospitals of Guy’s and St. Thomas at London. Barry then qualified the examination for the Royal College of Surgeons of England in July 1813 and was commissioned as a Hospital Assistant with the British Army and eventually promoted to Assistant Staff Surgeon. Barry served the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and then moved to Cape Town in 1817, and by the time Barry left Cape Town in 1828 was promoted to the post of the Medical Inspector. Barry had postings in India, Mauritius, Canada and West Indies. Barry retired in 1864 as an Inspector-General of Hospitals and returned to England.
