After deciding that the whistle and notebook were for him, he progressed through the leagues in Norway, and was considered ready to receive his FIFA badge at the start of 1994, making his European bow in the UEFA European Women’s Championship later that year and progressing into the European youth and club competitions, where he has been a regular ever since.

2003/04: Øvrebø took charge of one UEFA Champions League match – the group outing between AC Milan and Club Brugge KV, and three UEFA Cup encounters.

2004/05: Øvrebø refereed two UEFA Champions League matches, two UEFA Cup matches, one and FIFA World Cup qualifier between FYR Macedonia and Romania.

Domestic News Bayern run grinds to a halt (Friday, 23 September 2005) FC Bayern München's record-breaking run of 15 successive Bundesliga victories was finally ended on Saturday, meaning Felix Magath's side joined UEFA Champions League Group A rivals Club Brugge KV in failing to win. Italian champions Juventus FC continued their winning start to the new campaign while SK Rapid Wien also secured three points. uefa.com collects the action from Saturday's domestic league fixtures.

Hamburger SV 2-0 FC Bayern München

After labouring to a 1-0 victory against on Wednesday, courtesy of José Paolo Guerrero's late strike, Bayern saw their record-breaking Bundesliga winning run end at 15 consecutive matches with a 2-0 defeat by Hamburg. Rafael van der Vaart and Piotr Trochowski scored at the start of either half as the UEFA Cup hopefuls moved within a point of Bayern at the league summit.

The loss came despite the return of the talismanic Michael Ballack, after the German midfield player shook off an ankle injury, but Bayern coach Magath was not too downcast. "Hamburg took an early lead and that made life extremely hard for us because it gave them even more confidence," he said. "Having said that, our first-half display was the worst performance I have seen from my side this season, but 15 wins in a row is a fantastic feat."

Much of that run has been completed without a number of key players. Philipp Lahm (cruciate ligament) and Andreas Görlitz (ankle) are both medium to long-term absentees, although Andreas Ottl, Roque Santa Cruz and Owen Hargreaves - recently sidelined with ankle, thigh and groin injuries respectively - are all now back in training.

Club Brugge KV 0-1 KSC Lokeren OV

Coach Jan Ceulemans rang the changes following Club Brugge's 2-0 defeat by R. Standard de Liège in midweek, bringing five new faces into his starting lineup, but the ploy failed as they succumbed to their first home defeat since March 2003. Goalkeeper Tomislav Butina was one of the quintet, but he could do nothing when Rúnar Kristinsson swivelled inside the box and unleashed a powerful left-footed drive on the half-hour mark.

A new-look attack of Boško Balaban and Javier Portillo could not find an equaliser, and the news got worse for coach Jan Ceulemans after defender Günther Vanaudenaerde had to be replaced on 20 minutes. His replacement Jonathan Blondel later injured his team-mate Marek Spilár in an accidental collision, with the latter then carried off on a stretcher.

The extent of their injuries are not yet known but they are likely to join an ever-growing list of absentees on Tuesday. Rune Lange (calf), Manasseh Ishiaku (thigh), Joos Valgaeren, Michael Klukowski, Philippe Clement and Ivan Gvozdenović (all knee), and Sergiy Serebrennikov and Sebastian Hermans (both ankle) are already sidelined.

Club Brugge technical director Marc Degryse said: "We'll not use the long injury list as an excuse, because the replacements should be good enough. The loss is a heavy blow, it's long ago we lost at home. It's Murphy's Law everything is against us at the moment. But we have to continue, keep our heads up and keep on fighting. We enjoyed a lot of possession, but didn't create chances, and that's been the story of our season."

Parma FC 12 Juventus FC

Juventus came from behind to earn a 21 away win at Parma FC and extend their winning start to the new Serie A season to five matches. The home side took an early lead through Marco Delvecchio and largely controlled the first half but were pegged back shortly before halftime when Mauro Camoranesi left Parma goalkeeper Cristiano Lupatelli helpless with a powerful effort from distance.

Still without longterm absentees and Alessandro Birindelli and with Jonathan Zebina missing after picking up a thigh injury against Ascoli Calcio 1898 last weekend that will keep him out of Tuesday's game

with SK Rapid Wien, Juventus coach Fabio Capello opted to rotate his squad. Adrian Mutu replaced Pavel Nedvěd on the left flank while Marcelo Zalayeta linked up with David Trezeguet in attack. Juventus, who won 1 0 at fellow Champions League contenders on Wednesday, were revived by the introductions of Brazil midfield player Emerson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second period and eight minutes from time headed in his third goal in five games to gave the visitors a victory that took them five points clear at the Serie A summit.

"Parma were too aggressive in the first half," Capello reflected. "I knew that they would not be able to keep that pace all match long. We performed really well after the break. I picked up the right players and I am glad about the result. We were slow in the first half but we hugely improved our passing game in the second."

SK Rapid Wien 20 FC Wacker Tirol

Rapid stayed in touch at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga standings with a 20 home success against Wacker, their first league win since 6 August. In front of more than 10,000 spectators in Vienna, Josef Hickersberger's side struggled to break down their determined visitors but finally found a way through 13 minutes into the second half as Slovakian international midfield player Peter Hlinka scored the opening goal. Rapid, who lost 10 at home to FC Bayern München on Matchday 1, secured a moraleboosting victory with 19 minutes left as substitute Muhammet Akagündüz, who had come on 13 minutes earlier, wrapped up the win. The win moved Rapid, who remain third, within three points of league leaders FK Austria Wien.

Captain and Hlinka were back in the Rapid team after injury, with Hofmann particularly influential on his return from a thigh problem. Rapid were held 22 at SK Sturm Graz on Tuesday, but might have won more comfortably at the weekend with , Sebastian Martinez and Akagündüz all squandering opportunities to extend the final margin of victory.

"I'm satisfied with the match, especially with our attack," said Hickersberger. "In the first half Wacker had too many chances and if we play like that against Juventus, we will concede at least five goals. Wacker had a good defence but in the second half we dominated the match and should have scored more goals."

Bayern keep run going (Sunday, 18 September 2005) FC Bayern München, Club Brugge KV and Juventus FC all earned narrow onegoal victories at the weekend, but UEFA Champions League Group A rivals SK Rapid Wien continue to struggle a loss to VfB Admira Wacker Mödling making it five games without a win.

FC Bayern München 10

Bayern set a new record of 14 consecutive wins in the domestic top flight after a Martin Demichelis header secured them a 10 home victory over Hannover. Felix Magath's side did enough to pick up three points but rarely impressed, and again missed the creativity of influential Michael Ballack.

An ankle injury ruled Ballack out, as Magath handed a start to Iranian international Ali Karimi. Striker Claudio Pizarro was also ruled out after sustaining a slight knee injury against SK Rapid Wien on Matchday 1. Roque Santa Cruz missed the game with a thigh complaint, joining Philipp Lahm (knee), Andreas Ottl (ankle), Michael Rensing (shoulder) and Andreas Görlitz (thigh) on the sidelines. Demichelis returned to the starting lineup after recovering from ligament damage, although England Owen Hargreaves is out of Bayern's next Bundesliga match at Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday after suffering a groin injury.

"It is not possible to show our fans an attractive match if our opponent only focuses on defending," said Magath. "We had several problems with Hannover because some of our key players were sidelined, and we were a bit tired after our match in Vienna. But we managed to collect three points and that is all that matters," added captain Oliver Kahn.

Beveren as Club Brugge edged a tight contest. The Belgian youngster rifled home a firsttime shot after latching on to a wellweighted pass from Ivan Leko just after the halfhour mark. Club Brugge were equally indebted to goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen who made a string of excellent stops to deny Beveren as the visitors held on for the win to remain a point behind leaders R. Standard de Liège.

Stijnen is only playing because firstchoice custodian Tomoslav Butina is recovering from pneumonia, but coach Jan Ceulemans is in no doubts about who to hand the No1 jersey to when both are fit. "Stijnen again did excellent, but Butina is still number one," he said. "After the interval we were played off the park and that's painful. Luckily we were able to take three points though, for our first away victory [of the season]. And that after a heavy midweek match against Juventus."

The result is made even more impressive set aside the list of absentees Ceulemans has had to cope with. Michael Klukowski (knee), Rune Lange (calf), Ivan Gvozdenović (knee), Manasseh Ishiaku (thigh), Philippe Clement (knee) and Sebastian Hermans were all out, while Joos Valgaeren has joined them on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his knee on Saturday morning. He will be out for four to six weeks.

Juventus FC 21 Ascoli Calcio 1898

Alessandro Del Piero marked his return to the Juve starting XI in some style, scoring both goals as the Bianconeri eased to victory over league newcomers Ascoli. The Italy striker missed the Italian champions' opening two games against AC Chievo Verona and Empoli FC, but showed little sign of rustiness. He took just 13 minutes to register in his first start of the season, calmly slotting in from the penalty spot. Alfredo Cariello's equalised just after the halfhour mark, though parity lasted only six minutes before Del Piero executed an exquisite freekick.

Victory leaves Juve atop Serie A after picking up maximum points from their opening three fixtures but the win came at a price. With defenders Lilian Thuram, Alessandro Birindelli and Gianluca Pessotto already sidelined, Jonathan Zebina, who was making his comeback from injury, limped off after just two minutes to leave the side's defence looking decidedly threadbare. Manuele Blasi, who signed a new contract until 2009 on the Friday, reverted to rightback as he did in the 21 win against Club Brugge KV on Tuesday.

SK Rapid Wien 01 VfB Admira Wacker Mödling

After their UEFA Champions League defeat by Bayern, Rapid suffered their second reverse of the week in the Austrian Bundesliga. The defeat to bottom club Admira was their fifth game without a win.

Before Saturday, Admira had picked up just two points from nine games and were already eight points adrift at the bottom. Yet Rapid only created one real chance, which substitute Matthias Dollinger failed to convert. Admira's goal came on 75 minutes and had a touch of fortune about it, as Nino Bule's shot deflected off György Garics and left Rapid goalkeeper Helge Payer stranded.

Rapid skipper Steffen Hofmann sat the match out with a bruised thigh, and is expected to return for Tuesday's game against SV Austria Salzburg. Radek Bejbl moved up to his preferred position of defensive midfield, but was replaced after 59 minutes.

Rapid coach Josef Hickersberger said his team's performance was not up to scratch: "When you play in the Champions League you should not forget about the domestic league. It was the worst match my team has played for a really long time. Congratulations to Admira."

Competition overview Competition Overview How the UEFA Champions League works…

The UEFA Champions League is UEFA's most prestigious club competition. It was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its format and name were changed in 1992.

Real Madrid CF have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. They are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by six for AC Milan and five for current champions Liverpool FC.

The Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.

Since its inception in 1992/93, the Champions League has continued to evolve, maintaining a mixture of round- robin group matches as well as its traditional knockout format. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals.

If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knockout round contest the final, held as a single match in May.

The European Champion Clubs' Cup was a purely knockout competition until the format was changed in 1992/93 with the inception of the Champions League. That year the competition began with three knockout rounds with the winners advancing to a group stage involving two sets of four clubs playing home and away. The two group winners contested the final. A similar format was used the following season, with the addition of a two-legged semi-final stage involving the top two clubs from both groups.

The competition expanded further for the 1994/95 season with one preliminary round required before the clubs divided into four groups of four clubs. The top two clubs in each group advanced to the knockout stage, which this time began at the quarter-final stage. The 1997/98 season saw another phase of expansion. Two qualifying rounds were introduced and the group stage expanded to six groups of four clubs each. The six group winners and the two best runners-up advanced to the knockout stages.

An additional qualifying round was introduced for the 1999/2000 season to generate two group stages, firstly with 32 teams - eight groups of four - who played six matches apiece to reduce the competition to 16 teams for the second group stage, with the eight third-placed teams moving to the UEFA Cup third round. At the end of the second group stage, eight teams remained to contest the knockout stage.

Notices Higher Champions League revenue UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m (CHF930m) - higher than the revenue obtained last season.

Use within European football Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. The net amount of €430m (€453m in revenue less €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations) available to the clubs will be split into a fixed amount of €206m – starting bonuses, performance bonuses, match bonuses), and €206m for the so-called TV market pool (distributed proportionally to the income from the TV contracts of each country). A surplus of €18.6m is expected for this year’s competition.

Club payments Each of the 32 clubs involved in the Champions League group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m. In addition, they will receive a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage.

Winners' reward The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m.

Total minimum amount This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

Solidarity amounts Solidarity payments to European associations, leagues and clubs are expected to total around €75m. Some €22.5m will go to European leagues represented in the Champions League, while between €6.4m and €11.6m will be distributed among the European leagues not represented in the competition. The solidarity contributions are, among other things, intended for investment in club youth development programmes.

Record-breaking night for uefa.com The official UEFA website, uefa.com, kicked off the UEFA Champions League group stage with a record of its own, registering 11.7 million page views and 682,000 visits, as the competition got under way on 13 September.

Beating last season These figures beat the totals set on last season's opening night on 14 September 2004 when uefa.com received 8.4 million page impressions and 416,000 unique visits. Those totals have been eclipsed with increases of 39 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.

Latest results and statistics The website has been redesigned for the 2005/06 campaign, to provide a growing global audience of football fans with the latest live match results and statistics, plus enhanced multimedia coverage of European football. The site covers news from the 52 UEFA national football associations and 16 UEFA competitions, all reported in nine languages, including Russian, Japanese and Korean, as well as English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

Video footage uefa.com has a wealth of video footage available and as a result of the redesign, an embedded media player on the homepage specifically targets the broadband market, offering users a taster of the unique uefa.com Action video product.

Broadband users represent more than 80 per cent of the current uefa.com user base. This compares with just 54 per cent of users accessing via broadband in 2001 when the site was launched.

Enhanced online resource UEFA Media Technologies CEO, Alexandre Fourtoy, explained: "We are delighted to be offering supporters of European football throughout the world a vastly enhanced online resource for the 2005/06 season and beyond. All the additional elements that have been added to uefa.com in the past four years are now better integrated to make the site easier for our visitors to use. We believe that our strategy of tailoring content to the broadband market has been successful, and our recent redesign is a continuation of that pattern."

Steady development Europe's football website has evolved steadily since its initial launch in 2001, and the new design builds on the success of the official UEFA EURO 2004™ site. uefa.com received more than 75 million visits and served over 700 million page views in the last season, and on average, the site welcomes more than two million new visitors every month.

Top nations The list of top 15 nations from which football fans accessed uefa.com in the last 12 months is a mark of the site's global appeal - Australia, , Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, , Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Russian Federation, Spain, Turkey and the United States. These 15 head a total of 220 nations from which users accessed the site in the last year.
