Insights Matchday 37 Serie a TIM 2018-19 Insights Matchday 37 Serie A TIM 2018-19 May 18-20, 2019 UDINESE vs SPAL Udinese are winless in three Serie A TIM meetings with SPAL (2D, 1L). The only team that has failed to win four matches against SPAL over the last two Serie A TIM seasons is Genoa. Udinese are unbeaten in seven straight home Serie A TIM matches (4W, 3D), only Juventus (20 straight) has a longer active unbeaten home run in the competition. Andrea Petagna has converted all six of his penalty attempts in Serie A TIM this season. He’s the only player to attempt more than five penalties without missing. GENOA vs CAGLIARI Genoa have won eight of their last ten home Serie A TIM matches against Cagliari (2L), including the last three in a row. Genoa were 11th in the table after beating Juventus 2-0 heading into the March international break. They’ve collected a joint-Serie A TIM low three points (with Fiorentina) in the eight matches since, and are now in 17th place. Cagliari’s only two away wins in Serie A TIM this season were in the only matches in which they kept a clean sheet (3-0 at ChievoVerona in April, 1-0 at Atalanta in September). SASSUOLO vs ROMA Roma have never lost a Serie A TIM match against Sassuolo (7W, 4D), scoring in all 11 meetings (23 total goals). Sassuolo’s only win against a team currently above them in the table was a 1-0 victory against Inter on the opening day of the season. Stephan El Shaarawy has scored in two straight away Serie A TIM matches for the fifth time in his career. He’s scored in more than two straight away matches in the competition only once (7 straight from September to December 2012 with Milan). CHIEVOVERONA vs SAMPDORIA ChievoVerona have lost only two of their last ten home Serie A TIM matches against Sampdoria (W4, D4), including winning three of the last four meetings. All four of ChievoVerona’s wins in that time have been by a 2-1 scoreline. ChievoVerona enter the final two matches of the season with a -50 goal difference (25 scored, 75 conceded). The last team to finish with a goal difference of -52 or worse was Pescara (-57) in 2012/2013. Sampdoria (will finish 9th) will finish in the top half of the table in three straight Serie A TIM seasons for the first time since doing so in 12 straight campaigns from 1986/1987 to 1997/1998. EMPOLI vs TORINO Torino have never won at Empoli (9D, 6L) in all competitions, but have drawn seven of their last nine league visits. Diego Farias has scored in his last two Serie A TIM matches, the first Empoli player to do so since Giovanni Di Lorenzo in January. Torino have won 15 Serie A TIM matches this season, equalling their total from the 2013/2014 season. They last won more than 15 matches in a single Serie A TIM season in 1976/1977 (21 wins in 34 matches). PARMA vs FIORENTINA Parma (won 1-0 at Fiorentina in December) are trying to win both matches against Fiorentina in a single Serie A TIM season for the first time since 2001/2002. Only ChievoVerona (7 points) have collected fewer points in the second half of the season than Parma (13). Fiorentina have gone 12 straight Serie A TIM matches without a win (5D, 7L) in a single season for the first time since November 1989 to February 1990 (12 straight - 8D, 4L). MILAN vs FROSINONE The sides played a scoreless draw in December after combining for 12 goals in two Serie A TIM matches in 2015/2016 (7 for Milan, 5 for Frosinone). Suso (6 goals, 9 assists) has been involved in 15 goals, more than any of his Milan teammates in Serie A TIM this season (Krzysztof Piatek - 8 goals). Seven different players have scored Frosinone’s last eight goals in Serie A TIM (Daniel Ciofani - 2 goals). JUVENTUS vs ATALANTA Juventus are unbeaten in their last 28 Serie A TIM matches against Atalanta (23W, 5D) dating back to February 2001. Atalanta have managed three draws in their last four against Juventus, including a 2-2 draw in December. Juventus (2D, 1L) are winless in three straight Serie A TIM matches. It’s been more than seven years since they last went four league matches in a row without a win in a single season (4 straight in February-March 2012). Atalanta have collected 37 points in the second half of the season, most in Serie A TIM, one more than Juventus (36). NAPOLI vs INTER Inter (won 1-0 in December) are trying to win both matches against Napoli in a single Serie A TIM season for the first time since 1997/1998. Napoli have scored a Serie A TIM -high 17 goals from outside the box this season, four more than any other team. Dries Mertens and Arkadiusz Milik have each scored a joint-league-high six goals from outside the box this season. Samir Handanovic leads Serie A TIM with 17 clean sheets this season, three more than any other goalkeeper. His 17 clean sheets ties his career high, set in 2011/2012 with Udinese and matched last season with Inter. LAZIO vs BOLOGNA Lazio are unbeaten in 11 straight Serie A TIM matches against Bologna (6W, 5D including a 2- 0 win in December), their longest active unbeaten run against any team currently in the league. Lazio have lost their last two home Serie A TIM matches. They haven’t lost three straight home league matches in more than 11 years (October-November 2007). Bologna have more points and goals (22 points, 22 goals) in their last 10 matches than they had in their first 26 matches this season (18 points, 20 goals). .

In this paper, we assess empirically the connection between genetic diversity and the performance of sport teams. Focusing on football (soccer), we built a novel dataset of national teams of European countries that have participated in the European and the World Championships since 1970. Determining the genetic diversity of national teams is based on the distance between the genetic scores of every players’ origins in the team. Genetic endowments for each player are recovered using a matching algorithm based on family names. Performance is measured at both the unilateral and bilateral level. Identification of the causal link relies on an instrumental variable strategy that is based on past immigration at the country level about one generation before.
