  • Dante's Inferno</H1>
Dante's Inferno Dante's Inferno The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Volume 1 This is all of Longfellow's Dante translation of Inferno minus the illustrations. It includes the arguments prefixed to the Cantos by the Rev. Henry Frances Carey, M,.A., in his well-known version, and also his chronological view of the age of Dante under the title of What was happening in the World while Dante Lived. If you find any correctable errors please notify me. My email addresses for now are [email protected] and [email protected]. David Reed Editorial Note page 1 / 554 A lady who knew Italy and the Italian people well, some thirty years ago, once remarked to the writer that Longfellow must have lived in every city in that county for almost all the educated Italians "talk as if they owned him." And they have certainly a right to a sense of possessing him, to be proud of him, and to be grateful to him, for the work which he did for the spread of the knowledge of Italian Literature in the article in the tenth volume on Dante as a Translator. * * * * * The three volumes of "The Divine Comedy" were printed for private purposes, as will be described later, in 1865-1866 and 1877, but they were not actually given to the public until the year last named. Naturally enough, ever since Longfellow's first visit to Europe (1826-1829), and no doubt from an eariler date still, he had been interested in Dante's great work, but though the period of the incubation of his translation was a long one, the actual time engaged in it, was as he himself informs us, exactly two years.

TO PETER SOMMER TR AVELS Writing this in autumn 2020, it is hard to know quite where to begin. I usually review the season just gone, the new tours that we ran, the preparatory recces we made, the new tours we are unveiling for the next year, the feedback we have received and our exciting plans for the future. However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced.

BARKER UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON. U.S.A. Abstract: The uses of matrimony have always been standard practices for dynastic advancement through the ages. A perfect case study involves two important Italian families whose machinations had local implications and widespread international extensions. Their competitions are given particular point by the fact that one of the two families, the House of Savoy, was destined to become the dynasty around which the Modern State of Italy was created. This essay is, in part, a study in dynastic genealogies. But it is also a reminder of the wide impact of the crusading movements, beyond military operations and the creation of ephemeral Latin States in the Holy Land. Keywords: Matrimony, Crusading, Montferrat, Savoy, Levant.

History of the Crusades. Episode 71 The Fourth Crusade II. As part of the HistoryPodcasters.com network, this episode is sponsored by Leatherman Data Services. Leatherman Data Services are providers of mapping and geographic data services for historians, archaeologists, and cultural resource management firms. So if you're looking for an experienced cartographer to create a map for your website, you can email them at [email protected], or go to their website LeathermanDataServices.com. Hello again. Last week we saw the newly-installed Pope Innocent III call for a Crusade. The three most enthusiastic and wealthy young noblemen to answer the call are Count Theobald of Champagne, Count Louis of Blois and Count Baldwin of Flanders. The three young Counts held a planning meeting in the spring of the year 1200 in which they decided to sail to the Holy Land. Now, it seems at this stage that the young Counts decide to sail to Egypt instead of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Richard the Lionheart’s campaign during the Third Crusade had shown that Egypt was central to Muslim interests, and it seems that the young Counts decided that Egypt should be the target of the Crusade. However, it's questionable whether Pope Innocent III sanctioned this new destination, and there are some indications that he may not even have known about this change. Certainly, the fact that Egypt, and not the Holy Land, was the destination was not widely advertised. In his book “God's War”, Christopher Tyerman points out that a Flemish fleet wishing to join the Crusade in 1201 sailed to the Mediterranean, but then had no idea where they were meant to be headed.

Originalveröffentlichung in: Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Historica, 56, 1996, S. 177-194 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS LODZIENSIS FOLIA HISTORICA , 1996 Małgorzata Dąbrowska SOPHIA OF MONTFERRAT OR THE HISTORY OF ONE FACE Faced with the epoch of late Byzantium, the historian cannot complain about the lack of data concerning the Emperors. By way of contrast, there seems to be no material on the ladies who accompanied the Palaiologoi. Apart from a few exceptions, the lives of women were eclipsed by the politics which always acted as a matchmaker for their marriages. An eligible candidate that was chosen on the marriage market was supposed to bring in particular diplomatic assets. Such was the case of Sophia of Montferrat who played the role of political hostage in the négociations between Byzantium and the Papacy. In the first half of the 15th century Byzantium found itself at the mercy of fate or rather the Turks. But for Timur’s invasion on Asia Minor and his victory over the Turks at Ankara in 1402, Byzantium would have fallen. After a brief political respite for the Empire, the Turkish revival became a fact. In the reign of Sultan Mehmed I (1413-1421) the relations with the Byzantine neighbour were quite correct. Mehmed succeeded to the throne due to the support offered by Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos, who sided with him in the conflict with other pretenders to the rule. He did not attack. Manuel II profited by the time of agreement and he took care of the Byzantine possessions in the Peloponnese, where they bordered on the Latin ones.

  • What Was the Relationship Between Southern Italy and Sicily, Crusading and the Crusader States, C
What was the relationship between Southern Italy and Sicily, Crusading and the Crusader States, c. 1060-1198? Paula Z. Hailstone Royal Holloway, University of London PhD Degree 1 Declaration of authorship I, Paula Z Hailstone, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, that is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 26th September 2018 2 Abstract Despite the centrality of their geographical location in relation to routes to the East, the contribution of southern Italy and Sicily to the history of crusading and the crusader states (c. 1060-1198) has often only been recognised in passing. Historians have tended to focus upon either the development of the Italo-Norman states in southern Italy and Sicily, or on the crusades and their outcome in the Latin East. This thesis examines the interaction between these two different strands through an exploration of the role of identity. Building upon previous scholarship, it argues that an emergent Italo-Norman identity can be discerned in the actions and practices of the southern Italian contingent on the First Crusade and its aftermath. Different elements of identity were foregrounded by Bohemond et al for political purposes. A similar process of deliberate identification occurred following the creation of the kingdom of Sicily. Here, differences in the identities adopted on Sicily and the mainland were reflected in the subsequent political orientation of the two areas, with Sicily looking towards North Africa whilst the mainland continued to act as the principal conduit between the West and the Latin Near East.
