65 THE ENGLISH AT THE DERWENT, AND THE RISDON SETTLEMENT. BY JAMES BACKHOUSE WALKER. Read October 14th, 1889. ], The English at the Derwent. In a paper which I had the honour to read before the Royal Society last November, entitled " The French in Van Diemen's Land," I endeavoured to show how the discoveries of the French at the Derwent, and their supposed design of occupation, influenced Governor King's mind, and led him to despatch the first English colony to these shores. That paper brought the story to the 12th September, 1803, when the Albion whaler, with Governor Bowen on board, cast anchor in Risdon Cove, five days after the Lady Nelson, which had brought the rest of his small establishment. The choice of such an unsuitable place as Risdon for the site of the first settlement has always been something of a puzzle; and, in order to understand the circumstances which led to this ill-advised selection, it will be necessary to go back some years, and follow the historj'^ of English discovery and exploration in the South of Tasmania. I have already noticed the elaborate and complete surveys of the Canal D'Entrecasteaux, and the Riviere du Nord, made by the French navigators in 1792, and again in 1802 ; but it must be remembered that the results of these expeditions were long kept a profound secret, not only from the English, but from the world in general. Contemporaneously with the French, English navigators had been making independent discoveries and surveys in Southern Tasmania ; and it was solely the knowledge thus acquired that guided Governor King when he instructed Bowen " to fix on a proper place about Risdon's Cove " for the new settlement. -

First and most importantly: how is it that after more than 225 years, we have no Australian or regional Australian food culture, nor even any evidence – through recipes and dishes – of its more tangible and visible vector, cuisine? Secondly: what are the consequences for a nation and its people of having bypassed this important stage in the evolution of a society? Thirdly: why in over 200 years living here do we eat practically nothing that grows locally but those fish, birds, crustaceans and shellfish analogous to European produce? And finally, if we do not have a food culture in the historical sense, what do we have? The second third and fourth questions will be answered during the course of the project. The answer to all these questions will require, firstly, an exploration of the history of European occupation of this land and its occupiers. -

Women fished with handlines and ‘crescent shaped lures’ that were ground and chipped from shells. Fires burning in the canoes were used to cook fresh fish and mussels, which they spat into the water to attract fish. Profile of Shipping Investment
SECTION THREE: Profile of Shipping Investment CHAPTER 6: THE PROFILE OF EARLY SHIP INVESTORS, 1810-1825 This section examines the occupational profile of shipping investors in NSW from 1810-1850, with the aim of identifying those participants, and their motivation for investment. To date, no comparable investigation appears to have been undertaken for NSW shipowners. Several studies, those of Sarah Palmer and R.G. Albion, of shipowners in London and New York respectively provide both templates and sources for comparing the pattern of ship investment in countries at different stages of development.1 Our early maritime history prompts a reminder that Australian development needs to be seen in its global context. While identifying some of the opportunities open to the local maritime industry, I argue that the nature of local shipping activity was qualitatively different from that of Great Britain, being more speculative or opportunistic in character. The business of ship ownership was so fraught with risk that it raises the dual questions of what motivated local investors to undertake such speculation, and who were these investors. I suggest that entrepreneurial activity, rather than investment in shipping per se provided social as well as business leverage. I will show that the pattern of ship investment among occupational groups in NSW differed in some remarkable aspects to that of London during the same period. There were some wild fluctuations in the numbers investing, in the total of shipping registered, and in the occupational groups investing in shipping. This section will also examine in closer detail the specific characteristics of the major investors, mariners and merchants, the opportunities that made investment shipping attractive and the dynamics of that investment. -

Last year, when I read you my "Notes on the Genesis of the A ustralian Whaling Industry and its Subsequent Develop ments up to 1850," I mentioned that I had studiously avoided references to the Seal fisheries. Although this trade was in some respects closely aUied to whaling—in fact some pro tagonists went after both whales and seals — it involved different methods and was not as long lived an industry as the whaling. There is also available a wealth of material about the seal ing industry, which in its own way was every bit as colourful as the whaling; therefore it seemed to merit being dealt with in a separate paper. However, like the whaling, that very wealth of material makes it necessary to deal with the subject of the sealing industry in a paper of this nature in the form of notes rather than an attempt at a definitive account, although an attempt has been made to give the notes narrative form. VICTIM OF OIL HUNGER The seals of Australasia, like the whales of this area, became, but not to the extent of the whales, the victims of the oil-hunger of the advancing machine technology of the Industrial Revolution.
