Galter Abstract This volume represents a small, but specifically targeted contribution to a field of re- search and discussion which has increasingly come to the fore in the last two decades, regarding the practice of covering or veiling womens’ heads or faces over different times and places. “Dress is never value free”, as anthropologists state, and veiling functions as an assertion/communication of relationship dynamics in terms of gender, of social and cultural identity, of the phases and stages of life (puberty, marriage, death) or of religious beliefs – even reaching to a typical dichotomy of our times, the female condition between tradition and modernity. This book stems from an international conference at the University of Graz on March 2, 2020 – just before the outbreak of the COVID pandemic. The conference brought together Austrian specialists from the Graz Department of Ancient History and Classical Studies and from the URANIA für Steiermark Association, with academics from different Italian universities connected by the Cultural Association A.C. CulturArti of Udine within the framework of its second Alpe-Adria Festival of Public Archeology – No Borders project, funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region. A felicitous meeting between specialists from Austria and Italy, under the aegis of a mixed public and private management, now finds its outcome in the present volume, jointly edited by academics and organisers from both countries, with all papers in English. Galter Preface Roswitha Del Fabbro President of A.C.CulturArti, Udine, Italia Nowadays, the use of the female veil in the Islamic religious and cul- tural tradition is discussed in many different ways and perspectives, sometimes even going as far as studies of comparison with biblical Judaism and Pauline Christianity. Hardly at all debated, however, is the question of the possible antecedents of female veiling, for social or religious use, in the Near East (Assyria, Babylonia and the Levant) of the millennia preceding these three monotheistic traditions. Is it from the ancient Near East that the use of the burqa was born? Or did feminine veiling have different connotations, which were then modified with the progressive crisis of the polytheistic horizon? On 2 March 2020, a multilingual conference held at the Karl-Franzens- Universität in Graz (Austria) was devoted to the theme of the female veil from the ancient Orient to Islam, with a series of aimed interven- tions by historians, experts in law and religion, art historians, and other specialists on the ancient, medieval and modern Near East. The conference was organised by the Cultural Association Cultur- Arti (A.C.CulturArti) of Udine (Italy) in collaboration with the Karl- Franzens-Universität of Graz, as part of the comprehensive cultural project 2nd Alpe-Adria Festival of Public Archaeology. No Borders, for which the A.C.CulturArti was financed by the Friuli Venezia Gi- ulia Autonomous Region (as outcome of the 2019-20 Public Notice of Manifestations of Dissemination of Humanistic Culture). I am personally very grateful to Prof. Wolfgang Spickermann, of the University of Graz, who introduced the proceedings on the morn- ing of 2 March; and to Prof. F. Mario Fales (University of Udine) and Prof. Hannes D. Galter (University of Graz), who not only planned 9 Roswitha Del Fabbro Preface and organised the entire scientific event at length beforehand, but then also concretely led the interesting and constructive multidis- ciplinary discussions which followed each paper, thus guaranteeing the success of the Conference to the general satisfaction of partici- pants and audience.     Human Rights of Women Wearing the Veil in Western Europe Research Paper I. Introduction The present paper analyses legislation, policies, and case-law surrounding religious attire in a number of countries in Western Europe and how they affect the human rights of women and girls who wear the veil in Western Europe. It also more broadly analyses discrimination and violence experienced by women wearing the veil in Europe learning from their own voice. Throughout the paper, the terminology ‘veil’ is used to refer to a variety of religious attire worn mostly, but not exclusively, by Muslim women. There are different types of clothing that cover the body. This research is focused on manifestations of veils that are the subject of regulation in several Western European Countries. They include the hijab (a piece of clothing that covers the head and neck, but not the face), niqab (a piece of clothing that covers the face, where only the eyes are visible), burqa (a piece of clothing that covers both the face and eyes), jilbab (a loose piece of clothing that covers the body from head to toe), or abaya, kaftan, kebaya (a loose, often black, full body cover overcoat). The head and body covers are often combined. In several countries, some of these clothing are based on traditional costumes rather than religion and are often worn by rural communities in the countries of origins. The paper also uses the terminology ‘full-face veil’ or ‘face-covering veil’ to refer to both niqab and burqa. Furthermore, it refers to burkini, a swimsuit that covers the body from head to ankles, completed by a dress.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE HEADSCARF IN FRANCE, TURKEY, AND THE UNITED STATES BY HERA HASHMI* INTRODUCTION In July 2009, a man stabbed and killed a pregnant woman wearing a headscarf in a German courtroom during an appellate trial for his Islamophobic remarks against her.1 Her death led to outrage around the world, and she became known as the "martyr of the veil," a woman killed for her religious belief.2 Yet it was just a simple piece of cloth that evoked this violent reaction. Such Islamaphobic sentiments seem to be spreading throughout various parts of the world. In 2004, France banned headscarves and all conspicuous religious symbols from public classrooms.3 In 2005, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)4 upheld Turkey's headscarf ban barring thousands of headscarf-wearing women from attending schools, universities, and entering government buildings in a country where a majority of the population is Muslim.

These include the develop- ment of a network of pilgrimage centers, the renaissance of medieval pilgrim routes, the unflagging popularity of pilgrimages on foot as well as new forms using bicycles, canoes, skis, scooters, rollerblades and trailskates; along with riding, Nordic walking, running and so on. Related to pilgrimages, there is a growing interest in so-called ‘holidays’ in monasteries, hermitages and retreat homes, as well as a steady increase in weekend religious tourism. Religious tourists and pilgrims are attracted to shrines by mysteries, church fairs and religious festivals, in addition to regular religious services and ceremonies. No. 1994, 1–2, 6), depicts the Virgin and Child (fig. 1). It is painted on a single panel of pine wood, apparently without fabric between the ground and wood support. The icon was bequeathed by Guy Holford Dixon JP, who bought it from the Temple Gallery. A label on the back, attached when the icon was in the possession of the Temple Gallery, describes it as being Russian of the six- teenth century. In a preliminary Museum catalogue, however, the origin was given as Italy or Crete and the date as seventeenth century.1 The truth about the origin and the dating of the icon, as we shall see, lies in the mid- dle: I will argue that it is from Crete and of the sixteenth century. The Virgin is depicted half-length, holding the Christ-Child in her right arm while touching His left leg gently with her left hand. Her head is tilted towards the Child, although she does not look at Him. She wears a green garment and a purple maphorion on top, which bears pseudo-kufic decoration on the edges; decorative motives are also visible on the gar- ment’s collar and left sleeve. The maphorion is held together in front of the Virgin’s chest with a golden brooch, which apparently used to have decora- tion, now lost.

Kareem Bachelor of Architecture, University of Technology 1999 Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning, University of Baghdad 2004 Dissertation Committee: Adrian Parr, PhD (Chair) Laura Jenkins, PhD Patrick Snadon, PhD Abstract In his book Difference and Repetition, the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze distinguishes between two theories of repetition, one associated with the ‘Platonic’ theory and the other with the ‘Nietzschean’ theory. Repetition in the ‘Platonic’ theory, via the criterion of accuracy, can be identified as a repetition of homogeneity, using pre-established similitude or identity to repeat the Same, while repetition in the ‘Nietzschean’ theory, via the criterion of authenticity, is aligned with the virtual rather than real, producing simulacra or phantasms as a repetition of heterogeneity. It is argued in this dissertation that the distinction that Deleuze forms between modes of repetition has a vital role in his innovative approaches to the Nietzschean’s notion of ‘eternal return’ as a differential ontology, offering numerous insights into work on issues of homogeneity and heterogeneity in a design process. Deleuze challenges the assumed capture within a conventional perspective by using German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s conception of the ‘eternal return.’ This dissertation aims to question the conventional praxis of architecture and urban design formalisms through the impulse of ‘becoming’ and ‘non- representational’ thinking of Deleuze.
