It does so through a case study of the introduction and diffusion into Britain of a brass musical instrument, the wide bore German horn, over a period of some 40 years in the middle of the twentieth century. -

146 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL THE SACKBUT AND PRE-REFORMATION ENGLISH CHURCH MUSIC Trevor Herbert n the mid-1530s the household account books of the Royal Court in London showed that as many as twelve trombone players were in receipt of regular fees. If these accounts /signify all expenditure on Court music at that time, it can be estimated that an eighth of the wages bill for this part of its activities went to trombone players. The 1530s were something of a high point in this respect, but it remains the case that for the whole of the 16th century a corps of trombonists were, in effect, salaried members of the royal musical establishment.1 Yet, not a single piece of English music from this period is explicitly linked to the trombone. This in itselfis not significant, as the labelling of parts at this time was rare,2 but the illustration draws historians of brass instruments to a neat focus. Throughout the 16th century trombonists occupied a regular and important place in English musical life. The players were professionals, probably fine and distinguished performers: What did they play and when did they play it? In this article I address some issues concerning the deployment of trombones in the first half of the 16th century. It is worth stressing that musical practice in England in the 16th century was sufficiently different from the rest of Europe to merit special attention. As I explain below, the accession of Henry VII marks what many historians recognize as a watershed in British history. The death of his son Henry VIII in 1547 marks another. -

But indeed, ‘Why mouthpieces?’ There seem to be two main answers: one to enable the lips to access a tube too narrow for the lips to access unaided, and the other depends on what the trumpeter’s expectations are for the instrument to achieve. In our own culture, from the late Renaissance and Early Baroque onwards, trumpeters expected a great deal, as we can see in Bendinelli’s and Fantini’s tutors, both of which are avail- able in facsimile, and in the concert repertoire from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo onwards. As a result, mouthpieces were already large, both wide enough and deep enough to allow the player to bend the 11th and 13th partials and other notes easily. The transition from the base of the cup into the backbore was a sharp edge. -

Soprano Cornet
SOPRANO CORNET: THE HIDDEN GEM OF THE TRUMPET FAMILY by YANBIN CHEN (Under the Direction of Brandon Craswell) ABSTRACT The E-flat soprano cornet has served an indispensable role in the British brass band; it is commonly considered to be “the hottest seat in the band.”1 Compared to its popularity in Britain and Europe, the soprano cornet is not as familiar to players in North America or other parts of world. This document aims to offer young players who are interested in playing the soprano cornet in a brass band a more complete view of the instrument through the research of its historical roots, its artistic role in the brass band, important solo repertoire, famous players, approach to the instrument, and equipment choices. The existing written material regarding the soprano cornet is relatively limited in comparison to other instruments in the trumpet family. Research for this document largely relies on established online resources, as well as journals, books about the history of the brass band, and questionnaires completed by famous soprano cornet players, prestigious brass band conductors, and composers. 1 Joseph Parisi, Personal Communication, Email with Yanbin Chen, April 15, 2019. Course Content - Brass Instruments Introduction to Brass Instruments • Instruments are considered to belong in the Brass family if they make their sounds because of vibrations from the mouth and a mouthpiece. • Brass instruments are not necessarily made of brass. For example, the Digeridoo is a brass instrument made of wood. • The shape of the tube in a brass instrument is called a bore. The size and shape of the bore creates the sound of the instrument. • There are two shapes of bores: Cylindrical and Conical. • A Cylindrical bore stays the same width from beginning to end. A Conical bore gets wider as it progresses. • The very end of a brass instrument is called the Bell. • The two brass families are the Valved and Slide families. The only instrument in the slide family is the Trombone. • Valves on brass instruments are used to change the note by changing the size or length of the tube. Large and Medium Sized Brass Instruments • The largest instrument in the brass family is the Tuba. It plays the lowest notes. • The Sousaphone was invented to replace the Tuba in a marching band. It is designed to be carried. • Sousaphones are often made of lightweight fiberglass. • One of the oldest brass instruments is the Trombone. The slide of the trombone controls the notes instead of valves. • The French horn is the only brass instrument that is played left-handed. Victorian Brass Bands: the Establishment of a 'Working Class Musical Tradition'
HERBERT 1 VICTORIAN BRASS BANDS: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A 'WORKING CLASS MUSICAL TRADITION' Trevor Herbert y the end of Queen Victoria's reign, brass bands were one of the principal focuses of community music making in the United Kingdom. There were, if we are to believe the optimistic forecasts in one publication, 40,000 of them.1 Such a Bstatistic would indicate that the number of people playing in brass bands by the end of the century was something in the region of 800,000. At about the same time, audience attendance at open air brass band contests was, according to the highest estimate, 160,000 at a single event. This figure was quoted in the popular press following the 1900 National Brass Band Contest at the Crystal Palace. It should not, of course, be taken literally, but it is probably a good indicator of popular impression. When Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, the term '"brass band" meant nothing more than an ensemble of miscellaneous wind instruments in which brass instruments were prominent. At the end of the century the term was more closely defined. Brass bands had become the raison d'etre for a discrete but significant segment of the British music industry and for a widespread and intricate organizational structure that was largely controlled by working-class people. Since the end of the nineteenth century, the British brass band has had a standard line up of instruments - cornets in Bb (4 'solo', 2 seconds, 2 thirds plus one 'repiano'), 1 soprano cornet in Eb, 1 flugel horn in Bb, 3 tenor saxhorns in Eb, 2 baritone saxhorns in Bb, 2 euphoniums in Bb, 2 Eb basses, 2 BBb basses, 2 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone, and percussion. -

Hoover Beginning Band
Hoover Beginning Band Welcome, musicians! All students are welcome to join band without experience ! Beginning Band is a year-long elective that meets every day during school. Band does require home practice and instrument rental. Simply request “Beginning Band (Band 1)” on your schedule request form. ● Want to get a head start on learning an instrument? ○ Register for summer band! (June TBD). Applications can be picked up in the HMS front office or from your elementary music teacher after Spring Break. ● NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! ○ If you have never played an instrument before, don’t worry! Everyone is welcome in beginning band! ● Are you already in Orchestra? ○ You can continue into the Hoover Intermediate Orchestra AND take Beginning Band! ● Do we have grades in band? ○ Yes, just like any elective class that meets daily. The Legacy of Aaron Copland Reference Materials: General Performance Tips and Techniques INTRODUCTION The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus have recently completed an ambitious recording project to celebrate the centenary of the “Dean of American Music,” Aaron Copland. With the 100th anniversary of his birth on November 14, 2000, ensembles throughout the nation and around the world are programming Copland’s music now more than ever. Our Legacy of Aaron Copland reference recordings and our online resources are intended to make his music more accessible to students and to assist conductors and educators in preparing for their own performances. During our recording sessions and the rehearsals that led up to them, the members of the Field Band learned much about Aaron Copland and his music. We have chosen to share some of those insights through An Educator’s Guide to the Music of Aaron Copland. JUDICIOUS EDITING One of the first lessons any performer learns is that the printed music is only a guide to the sounds which the composer wishes to have recreated. Students should realize that professional musicians use their experience to judiciously edit printed parts; this makes things easier to play, or better reflects the composer’s original intent. Seemingly small changes can often result in much cleaner execution of parts. They can also reduce the technical requirements for most of the sections, while maintaining the rhythmic pulse. Educators can greatly improve the performance of their ensembles by judicious editing, allowing their strongest players to carry the load, while easing the burden for less-experienced students. -

President's Message and News of the Field
253 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Jeffrey Nussbaum The HBS has continued to make great progress. Our success is quite evident by the praise that we received from other music organizations at the meeting of early- music societies at the Berkeley Early Music Festival. We have once again exceeded our previous years membership. Our paid 1992 membership is near 550. The HBS Journal is gaining an international reputation as a distinguished publication of world-class caliber. With the HBS Newsletter and the HBS Journal our Society has created an important voice in the music community. We have continued to search for the widest range of articles on early brass, including historical, scientific, biographical topics, and our series of translations of important early treatises, methods and articles. The HBSNL gives us interesting articles, interviews, reviews, and the extensive News of the Field section. In the report given in this issue on the 8th Annual Early Brass Festival, it is noted that we had over 80 people in attendance. It was not only the best Festival yet, but also the largest. I think that it is in large part because of the great interest that the HBS has sparked in the early brass field, that so many people attended EBF 8. Plans are still underway to present a large International Historic Brass Symposium in 1994 or 1995. We now plan to expand the Early Brass Festival at Amherst College for this event. It is hoped that all of the major performers, scholars, collectors, and instrument makers will be invited. Members will be informed as this event develops.
