They can get close to killing beloved characters, or temporarily off them, but Ultimate X-Men: Cable Vol. 16 never makes me feel the tension of the actions scenes, because I know all the main characters are going to be fine. True tension comes from a world where consequences exist for actions. I thought that was left behind in the original X-Men from the 60's, because it is obviously creepy. The identity of Cable is different than the main universe, which isn't an issue for me, but I am not overly impressed by how it was revealed. I'm still mad at Kirkman as a writer and Professor X as a character in this volume so the superposed death of Professor X looses most of its emotional weight and isn't helped much by what felt like lazy artwork. What I didn't expect were some of the jarring twists. Can the shattered nation recover after the dramatic events of United We Stand? Poor plotting and pacing, below average art--the book's not terrible, but it's sort of forgettable. Ultimate X-Men But Bishop has to stop him, and joins the X-Men to do it. • Shields, Grounds and Microphone Cables
Shields, grounds and microphone cables Shields, grounds and microphone cables By Bill Whitlock There is an old joke that the definition of a cable is “a source of potential trouble connecting two other sources of potential trouble” – that is worth chewing on. All signals accumulate noise as they flow through equipment and the connecting wires, and once noise has contaminated a signal it is essentially impossible to remove it without altering or degrading the original signal. For this reason no system can be quieter than its noisiest link. Noise and interference must be prevented from entering any part of the signal path, and the most vulnerable areas are usually the signal interfaces. The level of noise that is tolerable in an analogue pathway depends on many things but for a professional microphone – a primary signal Fig 1—The impedance of 3m (10ft) of 2.5 2mm (12#) copper wire source – most users would like it to be low enough to allow a dynamic range of >120dB. significant 0.015 Ω. • Disentangling Dense Multi-Cable Knots
Disentangling Dense Multi-Cable Knots Vainavi Viswanath∗1, Jennifer Grannen∗1, Priya Sundaresan∗1, Brijen Thananjeyan1, Ashwin Balakrishna1, Ellen Novoseller1, Jeffrey Ichnowski1, Michael Laskey2, Joseph E. Gonzalez1, Ken Goldberg1 Abstract— Disentangling two or more cables requires many steps to remove crossings between and within cables. We formal- ize the problem of disentangling multiple cables and present an algorithm, Iterative Reduction Of Non-planar Multiple cAble kNots (IRON-MAN), that outputs robot actions to remove crossings from multi-cable knotted structures. We instantiate this algorithm with a learned perception system, inspired by prior work in single-cable untying that given an image input, can disentangle two-cable twists, three-cable braids, and knots of two or three cables, such as overhand, square, carrick bend, sheet bend, crown, and fisherman’s knots. IRON-MAN keeps track of task-relevant keypoints corresponding to target cable endpoints and crossings and iteratively disentangles the cables by identifying and undoing crossings that are critical to knot structure. Using a da Vinci surgical robot, we experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of IRON-MAN on untangling multi- cable knots of types that appear in the training data, as well as generalizing to novel classes of multi-cable knots. Results suggest that IRON-MAN is effective in disentangling knots involving up to three cables with 80.5% success and generalizing to knot types that are not present during training, with cables of both distinct or identical colors. Fig. 1: Overview of IRON-MAN: IRON-MAN (Iterative Reduction Of Non-planar Multiple cAble kNots) is an algorithm for disentanglement of I.

  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... Comics as a Medium dor Inquiry: Urban Students (Re-)Designing Critical Social Worlds Abstract Literacy scholars have argued that curricular remediation marginalizes the dynamic meaning-making practices of urban youth and ignores contemporary definitions of literacy as multimodal, socially situated, and tied to people's identities as members of cultural communities. For this reason, it is imperative that school-based literacy research unsettle status quos by foregrounding the sophisticated practices that urban students enact as a result, and in spite of, the marginalization they manage in educational settings. A hopeful site for honoring the knowledge of urban students is the nexus of alternative learning spaces that have taken on increased significance in ouths'y lives. Many of these spaces focus on young people's engagements with new literacies, multimodalities, the arts, and popular media, taking the stance that students' interests are inherently intellectual. The Cabrini Comics Inquiry Community (CCIC), located in a K-8 Catholic school in South Philadelphia, is one such space.

The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.
