GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING 1 Organization and Characteristics of the Graduate School of Engineering Outline of Master's Program

The purpose of the Graduate School of Engineering, Student's research and life are well supported by the Mechanical Engineering University of Fukui, is to educate engineers possessing University, so that students can devote themselves to This course of study concentrates on education and research in the following major areas of mechanical engineering : Material processing, materi- high research and development capabilities. The graduate study. For examples, students in the master's course can als strength, utilization of energy, fluid flow systems, energy conversion, machine dynamics, control, design, manufacturing engineering, and the development of machine systems with high reliability and excellent performance. School of Engineering consists of ten master's courses acquire research expenditures for their individual research, (enrollment limit : 239)and four doctoral courses(enroll- and those in the doctoral course are all engaged as a Electrical and Electronics Engineering ment limit : 40), which cover almost all engineering fields. research assistant. Electrical and electronics engineering forms the fundamentals of the present highly-industrialized society, and it develops as the center technology The specialized education of the graduate school of The detail of the courses and fields is shown below. that pulls the highly-networked information society from both sides of hardware and software. The Department supports the following major edu- cational/research fields;(1)innovative electronic/optical materials and devices,(2)efficient power generation devices, powerelectronics, power Engineering is supported by a teaching staff of about 180 Program Master's instructors who are working on leading-edge research of transmission and distribution networks, and(3)system science, knowledge base systems and telecommunication systems. Talented students who can adequately respond the highly-sophisticated and complicated social needs are growing up in the Department. engineering. Architecture and Civil Engineering

The ideal living environment in the 21st century is explored by taking architecture, city or region, and whole national land into account, using the approaches of natural and human sciences, technology, and fine arts. Structural Engineering undertakes the research to enhance the methods of structural design and performance evaluation as well as the understanding of the behavior of structure and components such as reinforced con- crete construction, steel construction and space frames. The Urban and Architectural Design's education and study are carried out on psychologi- cal and physiological comfort, physical phenomena related to sound, light, heat, and air, and behaviors of people in living environment as well as on history of architecture, design theory, and lifestyle of people as a whole.

Materials Science and Engineering

Our department is committed to educating students to become independent professional engineers and researchers who conduct innovative research and develop high quality functional materials, thus contributing to an environmentally sound and sustainable society. Through formal course work and mentoring, each student is expected to acquire comprehensive and systematic knowledge of the synthesis, structure, properties and production processes of inorganic, organic and polymeric materials. At the same time, students are encouraged to participate in cutting edge materials science research in the department. Our aim is to educate and nurture students to be qualified scientists and engineers whose scientific knowledge, competitive spirit and high ethical standards enable them to become leaders in their field.

Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology

“Chemistry” is a discipline that seeks to reveal the nature of substances and the changes that occur within such substances on the molecular level. “Biotechnology” is not merely concerned with the revelation of biological phenomena but makes it possible to utilize and modify such phenomena. The philosophy of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology is to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the education and the research based on the fundamentals of both “chemistry” and “biotechnology”. It is also to endeavor to create new technology that will form an industrial foundation that will enable us to foster a wholesome natural perspective and philosophy and to develop a healthy sustainable society.

Applied Physics

Almost all modern scientific technologies, such as computers, cellular phones, CDs, DVDs, high-tech medical technologies and space development technologies, are based on physics. There can further be no doubt, that the future development of physics will also produce new epoch-making technologies. Our Department of Applied Physics has many excellent members, who contribute to the present and future progress of technology, by working on a wide range of research topics, such as elementary particle physics, cosmology, nuclear physics, mathematical science, physics of magnetism, opti- cal properties of solids, quantum optics, molecular science, plasma physics and far-infrared technology.

Human and Artificial Intelligent Systems

The Department of Human and Artificial Intelligent Systems is a powerful group of investigators, called Imageneers, studying how natural systems work and how intelligent, human-friendly, real-world systems can be realized by learning from the nature. The aim of the Graduate Course is to send out a new breed of engineers, Imagineers, who have sufficient skills on computers and mechatronics to develop software and/or hardware systems with artificial intelligence and have good understanding on the humanity, and thus to contribute to the regional, social and industrial developments.

( ) Fiber Amenity Engineering

The Fiber Amenity Course was established as the first independent study course for graduate students in the University of Fukui in 2002. The aims of this course are to expand a conventional fiber industry, which has been the key industry in Fukui, to an innovative fiber industry in non-clothing materi- al areas and pursue “amenity-comprehensive comfort for people, things, and environment”. Towards this end, we address multidisciplinary, interdisci- ( ) plinary, international activities in education and research with many international students and graduate students from various industrial fields.

Nuclear Power and Energy Safety Engineering

Nuclear Power and Energy Safety Engineering Course in graduate school has been started accepting Master's degree candidate students in April 2004, and Doctor's degree candidates in April 2006. This course aims at carrying out practical and academic researches relevant to energy and nuclear power under the unified key words “safety and symbiosis.” In our courses, considering the fact that our university is located in Fukui pre- fecture with 15 commercial nuclear power plants, practical topics such as safety and security of nuclear power plants, symbiotic society, stable electric power network and technology transfer from the nuclear industry to local industries, and others are considered for education and research.
