Greeney Received 17 February 2016 Summary.—We provide novel data concerning the nests, eggs and parental care of Yellow-browed Antbird Hypocnemis hypoxantha based on two nests in eastern Ecuador and Peruvian Amazonia, one of which was video-taped. Both adults participated in incubation, with earliest and latest feeding events at 06.11 h and 17.22 h, respectively. Feeding behaviour is described, with intervals of 1–114 minutes (mean = 38.3 minutes) and tettigoniid cicadas the primary prey. Nestlings frequently produced faecal sacs (interval range = 4–132 minutes, mean = 37.8 minutes) immediately following food delivery, and the sac was always carried from the nest by an adult. Two events involving a parent bird being chased from the nest are described, the first involving a male Fulvous Antshrike Frederickena fulva. Systematics are discussed in light of nest morphology and architecture. Yellow-browed Antbird Hypocnemis hypoxantha is a distinctive Amazonian thamnophilid that comprises two currently recognised subspecies: nominate hypoxantha in western Amazonian lowland and foothill forests from southern Colombia south to central Peru, and H. h. ochraceiventris in south-east Amazonian Brazil (Zimmer & Isler 2003). Generally found below 400 m, the nominate subspecies occasionally ranges as high as 900 m (Zimmer & Isler 2003, Ridgely & Tudor 2009). The species’ reproductive biology is almost completely unknown (Zimmer & Isler 2003). Willis (1988) provided a cursory description of a nest with nestlings from Colombia, but included few details of the nest and no description of the eggs or behaviour. -

Foraging niche structure and coexistence in a highly diverse community of Amazonian antbirds (Thamnophilidae: Aves) by SANTIAGO DAVID B.Sc, Universidad de Antioquia, 2011 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Zoology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) May 2016 © Santiago David, 2016 Abstract The high species richness of antbirds (Thamnophilidae) in Amazonian lowlands, where as many as 40 species may coexist at local scales, represents a major challenge for ecologists to explain patterns of coexistence and niche evolution. I studied the foraging ecology of a local community of antbirds in a 2-Km2 area of lowland forest in SE Peru to examine how co- occurring antbird species differ in their use of foraging resources, and whether these differences result in niche partitioning at the community level. I also examined whether resource use similarity was related to phylogenetic similarity in this local assemblage. Forty-four species of antbirds were detected in the study plot in a four-year period, with 30 species categorized as the local assemblage of common resident breeders. Multivariate analysis of foraging parameters showed that segregation at two height layers in two types of forest was more important than foraging substrates and maneuvers in explaining the differences observed in foraging behavior. However, a null model analysis revealed that at the community level, antbirds exhibited high foraging niche overlap, with average observed overlap significantly larger than expected by chance, indicating that antbirds prefer, rather than avoid, resources used by other species. -

ECOLOGICAL REPORT APRIL 2017 INKATERRA ASSOCIATION I. POINT COUNTS REPORT 1.1. SAMPLING ÁREA: Inkaterra Guides Field Station - Palmetum 1.2. DATE: April 06th, 2017 1.3. STARTING HOUR: 5:35 h CLOSING HOUR: 7:25 h 1.4. PARTICIPANTS: Noe Huaraca y Andreina Méndez 1.5. OBJECTIVES: 1.5.1 To complement bird wildlife diversity monitoring by including canopy and underbrush forest bird species of Inkaterra Guides Field Station. 1.5.2 To establish the registered bird species' abundance parameters patterns. 1.5.3 To understand the differences between bird wildlife compositions according by its habitat. 1.6. METODOLOGÍA: The Point Count method (Ralph et al., 1995; Ralph, 1996; MINAM, 2015) was employed, which consists in staying at a point station for 10 minutes, while recording all the birds seen and heard. The distance between points is 150 meters. This month, the evaluation was performed at the trail way depicted by Image 1. Inkaterra Guides Field Station Palmetum Image 1. Sampling area and Point Counts map 1.7. RESULTS: 8 point stations were evaluated, where 64 subjects were registered, all belonging to 19 Families and 11 Orders. All registered subjects indicated a richness of 46 species. The richest Order was Passeriformes with 21 species and 7 families (Thamnophilidae, Cotingidae, Formicariidae, Furnariidae, Icteridae, Trogloditydae y Tyrannidae), next were Psittaciformes (macaws, parrots and perakeet) with 6 species and 1 family, Galbuliformes (jacamar), and finally, Columbiformes (pigeons) with 4 species and 1 family per each one. Among the bird species registered, the most relatively abundant were parrots; the Pionus menstruus species (Blue headed Parrot) showed the highest number of subjects registered while flying (n=11), all spotted at counting point 2 (n=7) and counting point 3 (n=4). -
Brazil's Eastern Amazonia
The loud and impressive White Bellbird, one of the many highlights on the Brazil’s Eastern Amazonia 2017 tour (Eduardo Patrial) BRAZIL’S EASTERN AMAZONIA 8/16 – 26 AUGUST 2017 LEADER: EDUARDO PATRIAL This second edition of Brazil’s Eastern Amazonia was absolutely a phenomenal trip with over five hundred species recorded (514). Some adjustments happily facilitated the logistics (internal flights) a bit and we also could explore some areas around Belem this time, providing some extra good birds to our list. Our time at Amazonia National Park was good and we managed to get most of the important targets, despite the quite low bird activity noticed along the trails when we were there. Carajas National Forest on the other hand was very busy and produced an overwhelming cast of fine birds (and a Giant Armadillo!). Caxias in the end came again as good as it gets, and this time with the novelty of visiting a new site, Campo Maior, a place that reminds the lowlands from Pantanal. On this amazing tour we had the chance to enjoy the special avifauna from two important interfluvium in the Brazilian Amazon, the Madeira – Tapajos and Xingu – Tocantins; and also the specialties from a poorly covered corner in the Northeast region at Maranhão and Piauí states. ABSTRACT: Economic activities, such as extensive cattle ranching, may seriously threaten the types of forest most important to the Mato Grosso Antbird Cercomacra melanaria, and information on reproductive biology is essential for defining sound conservation and management strategies for the species. Here, we report on the reproductive biology of this species in the Brazilian Pantanal, focusing on attributes such as incubation and nestling periods, as well as characteristics of parental care. The hypothesis that nest occurrence is associated with canopy opening was also tested. Average nest height was 0.98 m; mean nest construction and egg incubation periods were 12.2 and 14 days, respectively; average nestling period was 9.4 days. Both males and females participated in nest construction, egg incubation, and feeding of nestlings. Tropical Birding Trip Report Southeast Brazil: Atlantic Rainforest and Savanna, Oct-Nov 2016 SOUTHEAST BRAZIL: Atlantic Rainforest and Savanna October 20th – November 8th, 2016 TOUR LEADER: Nick Athanas Report and photos by Nick Athanas Helmeted Woodpecker - one of our most memorable sightings of the tour It had been a couple of years since I last guided this tour, and I had forgotten how much fun it could be. We covered a lot of ground and visited a great series of parks, lodges, and reserves, racking up a respectable group list of 459 bird species seen as well as some nice mammals. There was a lot of rain in the area, but we had to consider ourselves fortunate that the rainiest days seemed to coincide with our long travel days, so it really didn’t cost us too much in the way of birds. My personal trip favorite sighting was our amazing and prolonged encounter with a rare Helmeted Woodpecker! Others of note included extreme close-ups of Spot-winged Wood-Quail, a surprise Sungrebe, multiple White-necked Hawks, Long-trained Nightjar, 31 species of antbirds, scope views of Variegated Antpitta, a point-blank Spotted Bamboowren, tons of colorful hummers and tanagers, TWO Maned Wolves at the same time, and Giant Anteater. South East Brazil 18th – 27th January 2018 Grey-winged Cotinga (AF), Pico da Caledonia – rare, range-restricted, difficult to see, Bird of the Trip Introduction This report covers a short trip to South East Brazil staying at Itororó Eco-lodge managed & owned by Rainer Dungs. Andy Foster of Serra Dos Tucanos guided the small group. Itinerary Thursday 18th January • Nightmare of a travel day with the flight leaving Manchester 30 mins late and then only able to land in Amsterdam at the second attempt due to high winds. Quick sprint (stagger!) across Schiphol airport to get onto the Rio flight which then parked on the tarmac for 2 hours due to the winds. Another roller-coaster ride across a turbulent North Atlantic and we finally arrived in Rio De Janeiro two hours late. Eventually managed to get the free shuttle to the Linx Hotel adjacent to airport Friday 19th January • Collected from the Linx by our very punctual driver (this was to be a theme) and 2.5hour transfer to Itororo Lodge through surprisingly light traffic. Birded the White Trail in the afternoon. Saturday 20th January • All day in Duas Barras & Sumidouro area. Luggage arrived. Sunday 21st January • All day at REGUA (Reserva Ecologica de Guapiacu) – wetlands and surrounding lowland forest. Andy was ill so guided by the very capable REGUA guide Adelei. Short visit late pm to Waldanoor Trail for Frilled Coquette & then return to lodge Monday 22nd January • All day around lodge – Blue Trail (am) & White Trail (pm) Tuesday 23rd January • Early start (& finish) at Pico da Caledonia. -

The area surveyed was along the Tumupasa/San Jose de Uchupiamones trail at the edge of Parque Nacional Madidi in Depto. La Paz, Bolivia. We report observations of 231 species of birds detected by sight and sound, including many outlying ridge specialists. We report and present photographs of a new species for Depto. La Paz (Caprimulgis nigrescens), the second Bolivian localities for Porphyrolaema prophyrolaema, Zimerius cinereicapillus, and Basileuterus chrysogaster, and five new species records for Parque Nacional Madidi.
