We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our selves and of our wicked deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, none can guide. And I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, and He has no partner; and I bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, send many blessings and salutations upon him, his family, and his Companions until the Day of Judgement. 4ojXi £fo % %£ i> 4& &- i\ \$& \p; h$\ ($& O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except as Muslims. [1] £f-J &J ^rJJ xi ^i j^y o?^> C£ JWJi- cSJn SSij \j&\ u"tli ^Cj.7 < *£c& Ja ail oi A*tf\i *%. 6)*£z lijdi 5il \ju\> iO^ \jt& *Ji^ Atej O mankind be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created his wife, and from them both He created many men and women; and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever and All-Watcher over you. [2] O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever [1] (Aal -Imran 3: 102) [2] (An-Nisa' 4:1) ' What Must Be Known About Islam 10 r^V 0* ^j*' & -^ ^ obeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed achieved a great achievement. [1] In these times, there is an urgent need to educate people regarding the affairs of their religion in simple and clear language, so that they can worship Allah sincerely, in accordance to what Allah legislated in His Book and to what the Prophet $|§ pronounced with his tongue. This need is especially felt among the common man and those who are new adherents to the religion of Islam. Islam must be presented in an easy and plain manner so that people can enter into Islam in flocks, and so that we can all be blessed with those words that the Prophet 5H said to 'AH, may Allah be pleased with him: ° \ "For Allah to guideguid one man through you is better for you than " red camels. [2] And he $|f also said: (i^-QJ ^ii;! ^e\ y£» [3] "The best of people is the one who benefits people most." Beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds; indeed these are the keys of success and the basis for safety in this life as well as in the next. When Allah guides a person to both beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, then that person has achieved happiness in both abodes. And then, if he completes those blessings by spreading knowledge, disseminating it among the people, then the meanings of righteousness and piety are complete in him, and he becomes like good rain: wherever it falls, it benefits. This was the way that the [1] (Al-Ahzab 33:70, 71) [2] Prime possessions at the time. It is an agreed upon narration; recorded by Al- Bukhari and Muslim. [3] Al-Qudha'i in Musnad Ash-Shihab (2:23), and it was to him that As-Suyuti ascribed it in Aljami' As-Saghir (2:9) and As-Suyuti put an abbreviation indicating it to be Hasan. It is also recorded by At-Tabarani in Al-Awsat (6:368). It is also mMcjma' Al-Bahrain (1:131,132) and Al-Qudha'i related it inMusnadAsh- Shihab (1:108). AlAlbani mentioned theHadith inAs-Sahihah and said, "Indeed the Hadilh is Hasan." Refer to As-Sahihah no. 426 Introduction 11 Su«JI righteous scholars of every era and region lived. A group of students of knowledge — may Allah Almighty reward them well — have resolved to put together this book, which contains that which a Muslim must know, presented in clear and plain words; it consists of a summary of many topics, such as Aqeedah (beliefs), acts of worship, and manners.

Ernst) This dissertation examines contemporary American Muslim exegesis of the Qur‘an. I argue that local interpretations of the Qur‘an are shaping a new Muslim culture of global importance, where English serves as a Muslim tongue and the Qur‘an as an American sacred text. The dissertation is organized in four sections, each exploring the rhetoric of a prominent Muslim American intellectual who represents a distinct stream of Muslim discourse. The first two chapters focus on written exegesis and highlight the work of Fazlur Rahman, a Pakistani-American modernist scholar, and Amina Wadud, an African- American Muslim feminist. I analyze how Rahman and Wadud translate the modern notion of gender to resonate with the Qur‘an. The next two chapters present oral interpretations advanced by two preachers, Warith Deen Mohammed, the leader of the largest African-American Muslim movement, and Hamza Yusuf, the most recognizable spokesperson to the second generation of immigrant Muslims. Mohammed and Yusuf serve as examples of the discourse of Islam as an American public religion.

    The Psalms of Islam Imam Aliibn Al-Husayn (Peace be Upon Him) Introduction Chain of Authorities Sahifa Al-Kamilah Addenda Prayers for the Week The Whispered Prayers Treatise on Rights Blessing upon Muhammad and his Household TRANSLATOR'S INTRODUCTION AL-SAHIFAT AL-SAJJADIYYA is the oldest prayer manual in Islamic sources and one of the most seminal works of Islamic spirituality of the early period. It was composed by the Prophet's great grandson, `Ali ibn al-Husayn, known as Zayn al-'Abidin (`the adornment of the worshippers'), and has been cherished in Shi'ite sources from earliest times. Zayn al-'Abidin was the fourth of the Shi'ite Imams, after his father Husayn, his uncle Hasan, and his grandfather 'Ali, the Prophet's son-in-law. Shi'ite tradition considers the Sahifa a book worthy of the utmost veneration, ranking it behind only the Qur'an and `Ali's Nahj al-balagha. `ALI IBN AL-HUSAYN `Ali ibn al-Husayn was born in Medina, according to most sources in the year 38/658-9. He may have been too small to have remembered his grandfather 'Ali, who was killed in 40/661, but he was brought up in the presence of his uncle Hasan and his father Husayn, the Prophet's beloved grandchildren. Many Shi'ite sources state that his mother was Shahrbanu, the daughter of Yazdigird, the last Sasanian king of Persia. Thus he was said to be `Ibn al- Khiyaratayn', the `son of the best two', meaning the Quraysh among the Arabs and the Persians among the non-Arabs.
