Once they are fully grown only the underside remains a remarkable light grey. The leaves are rough and slightly lobed. No other ornamental apple tree has such exceptional autumnal colours as this. With its many shades, from purple and copper through orange to yellow, the tree is a real eye-catcher in the autumn. The (fragrant) flowers and the fruits are much less spectacular than those of the other ornamental apple trees. -

Keeping in view, genetic divergence studies in Department of Biotechnology, indigenous crab apple biotypes (Malus baccata var. Himaliaca) maintained at two field gene banks of Dr YS Parmar University of Himachal Pradesh state of India was carried out by using the RAPD molecular markers. A total of 119 Horticulture and Forestry, decamer primers were initially screened to check these biotypes during the genotypic screening out of Nauni, Solan, Himachal which 94 showed clear and scorable bands. In samples collected from IARI Regional Station, Shimla, Pradesh, India these primers revealed 67.47% of polymorphism and PIC value ranged between 0.497 to 0.867, whereas average number of alleles per primer was 4.84. Jaccard’s similarity coefficient ranged from 0.44 to 0.65 which showed the divergence among the biotypes. Comparatively low percentage polymorphism (53.37%) was observed in seven biotypes maintained at NBPGR, Regional Station, Shimla, while almost similar PIC value range 0.47-0.87 was obtained as in case of former. -

Diller* In May 1950 the forest and ornamental plantings at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station were dedicated as the Secrest Arboretum in memory of Edmund Secrest, the father of forestry in Ohio. Since 19o8 these plantings have been expanded to include well over 600 species and varieties of trees and shrubs from many parts of the world. It is the purpose of this publication to serve as a finding list and guide to the Arboretum. The Purpose of the Arboretum One purpose of the Arboretum is to _determine the species and varieties of trees adapted for ornamental, windbreak, and shelterbelt uses in 6hio. There are many varieties of spruces, firs, yews, arborvitae, and other coniferous trees and shrubs growing here for observation by people interested in landscaping and the planting of shelterbelts. Among the more recent additions to the Arboretum is a collection of over 60 varieties of flowering crabapples, 57 selections of hollies and a plot of Chinese dawnredwood. The second purpose of the Arboretum is to determine the spe?ies of trees best adapted for reforestation in Ohio and to determine the silvicultural requirements that will obtain best results in growth and maturity. -

Newton ABSTRACT— Changes in the coverage of trees and shrubs on the North Dakota landscape since Euro- American settlement have likely had a pronounced impact on bird species that favor woody vegetation. Long- term data sets on breeding bird populations in wooded habitats in North Dakota or in the Great Plains are scarce. In 1975 a wildlife habitat plot was established in a 10.5 ha cropland fi eld with a long history of small- grain production. Th e objective of this article is to evaluate the successional changes in bird populations as the habitat at this site became more biologically and structurally complex aft er the establishment of a diverse stand of shrubs and trees. -

The Role of Chinese Plants in Hungarian Landscape Architecture Laszlo Gerzson Corvinus University of Budapest, Department of Garden and Open Space Design [email protected] Abstract: Most outdoor plants in Hungarian horticulture are exotas mainly from Middle and East Asia and North America. The flora of China is diversified and has many species because the last glacial period did not reach China. The richness of the Chinese flora was known for Europeans by the missionaries and medics first in19th cectury. Later some bigger nurseries sent expeditions in China to collect new plants. Nowadays the Hungarian landscape architecture is impossible without Chinese plants. Keywords: China, Landscape architecture, Glacial period, Discovery. Introduction Most outdoor plants (trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials) in Hungarian horticulture are exotas, which feel good in our climate. In outdoor planting it is very important that plants feel good in their new environment or at least that they can tolerate it, which will depend on their original environment, i.e. the circumstances under which they were chosen. That is why many plants from Middle and East Asia and North America have an important part to play in the structure of Hungarian and European ornamentals. Speciality of the Chinese Flora The flora of China is diversified and has many species. The reason for this is that the lay of the country’s land varies. There are high mountains, ones over 4.000 meters, with alpine vegetation; highlands with forests; and lowlands lying near sea level. Especially in China, these different places are close to each other, so many kinds of plants occupy a relatively small area. -
