This material is exclusively prepared for Ringle Customers [Summary in English] Two recent cases of manipulation in the Korean entertainment industry shocked the rest of society. ● The final rankings and debut members for the K-pop idol group debut show Produce 101 on Mnet, a popular music channel, were manipulated through real-time voter rigging. ⇒ An aspiring idol who failed to win the competition ended up debuting through manipulation. ● Some brokers manipulated the Top 100 charts by hoarding certain singers’ albums and infinitely streaming their songs. ⇒ Lesser known singers topped the music charts, beating famous idol groups such as BTS and Blackpink. The manipulation of Mnet’s idol group debut shows Produce 101 was an incident involving inappropriate requests between the show’s head producer and certain entertainment agencies. ● Original Intention of Produce 101: One hundred and one idol trainees from various entertainment agencies compete for three months, with viewers voting in [1] real time by text message and determining the final top 11 participants to debut as a group. Produce 101 served as an opportunity to showcase their talents, especially for aspiring idols from smaller agencies with less public awareness and marketing support. ● Success of Produce 101: While other competition programs enlisted celebrity judges to evaluate and rank its participants, Produce 101 became a huge hit by inviting active viewer participation. Idol groups IOI, Wanna One, and IZ*ONE debuted through Produce 101 season 1, 2, and 3, respectively, and became extremely popular in Korea and Asia; the success of the show has had a huge impact on ratings as well as the entertainment industry at large. ● Manipulation in Produce 101: A pattern was discovered in the viewer votes for the top 11 members in Produce 101 season 4. The police investigation found lobbying evidence between the show’s head producer and some entertainment agencies, revealing that the rankings of the top 11 members were predetermined before the final episode of season 4. After proof of manipulation was found not only in season 4 but also earlier seasons, the header producer was arrested and the CEO of Mnet held a press conference where he admitted to wrongdoing and publicly apologized. Users tend to listen to music that has reached the top of the chart instead of searching for individual songs. Accordingly, entering the Top 100 chart is a prerequisite for success as a musician in Korea. ● Brokers artificially boosting rankings: In this structure of music consumption, brokers under the [3] guise of “social media marketers” can enable even less famous singers to top the charts. Their method is to create 10,000 fake IDs in a popular app, then intensively purchase and stream a particular song at 2-3 a.m. (when the least number of listeners are active) to push the song onto the real-time chart. The brokers approach middle-aged singers who debuted 10 years ago, new singers who aren’t well-known, and their agencies, guaranteeing their chart entry for a minimum of a hundred million won. ● Famous singers falling behind lesser known singers: Songs by BTS, Blackpink, IU, and other artists with huge fandoms began to drop below less famous artists on the Top 100 chart. The singer who topped BTS was suspected of entering the top charts through manipulation because he was barely able to sell any concert tickets during the same time. ● Idol member Park Kyung’s tweets publicizing the issue of music manipulation: Park Kyung, a member of the popular idol group Block B, tweeted, “I want to ‘hoard’ like Vibe, like Song Ha-ye, like Im Jae-hyun, like Jeon Sang-geun, like Jang Duk-cheol, like Hwang In-wook.” The tweet was then reported through various media, raising public interest in music chart manipulation and launching police investigation. Although the singers mentioned on Park’s tweet claim that they only conducted social media marketing through a marketing agency, there is circumstantial evidence that the marketing agency was actually a broker who raised their ranking through hoarding tactics. Manipulation cases aren’t unique to the entertainment industry. Both of the aforementioned events demonstrate the prevalence of manipulation when capital is involved. Startups trying to catch consumers’ attention by paying to enter the top 5 real-time search terms may not be fundamentally different from musicians paying brokers to reach the real-time Top 100 chart and ultimately get more clicks. ⇒ In fact, many areas of society try to influence consumer decision through real-time search terms. Google has been long rumored to manipulate the related search terms for politicians during election seasons, while Facebook is suspected of circulating only favorable content for certain candidates. At the same time, the lure of manipulation is not limited to celebrities; we must all establish our own philosophy regarding what we would do in such situations. ● What the two events have in common is the fact that some form of editing in the name of “rankings” and “high exposure” has been conducted to influence public perception, preferences, and choices. In this current media environment, consumers are more inclined to unwittingly and passively accept information provided by Internet/mobile platform operators than to independently look for, compare, and criticize information before making choices that are 100% compatible with their preferences; therefore there are an increasing number of [4] entities trying to influence public taste through manipulation of numbers, rankings, and search terms. ⇒ In the current media structure, more people are expected to manipulate public taste like the head producer and brokers of Produce 101 season 2. Thus consumers need to search for information and make their own judgments instead of accepting the conveniently available information.
