    ATLANTIS Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies 37.1 (June 2015): 101-119 issn 0210-6124 The Poverty Tour: Life in the Slums of Mumbai and Manila as Seen in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire and Merlinda Bobis’s The Solemn Lantern Maker Feidhlim Hanrahan Universidade de Vigo [email protected] In the twenty-first century Mumbai and Manila, lingering postcolonial issues have merged with contemporary issues of globalisation and neo-imperialism as both India and the Philippines are faced with the realities of Western hegemony. This article will examine how the creators of the film Slumdog Millionaire and the novel The Solemn Lantern Maker, both from 2008, have chosen to portray these similar realities in different ways. Two major questions could be asked about these texts. Has British director Danny Boyle fallen into the trap of Orientalism, as outlined by Said in 1978, glamorising the abject poverty of the Mumbai slums, making them look appealingly exotic under a Western gaze? Is the Philippine-Australian author Merlinda Bobis’s representation of the penury of Manila’s street children, from their huts to shopping malls, passing through an underworld of sex tourism, a more authentic representation than Boyle’s? Or is it merely a native informant’s appeal for global readership? These postcolonial texts have become commodities in a global market, where their marketing in the Western world by global media corporations affects their reception and interpretation. Tweet 0 Share [] Slumdog Millionaire is a movie that thrives on its gorgeous improbability, not to mention the all­singing­all­dancing talents of the most appealingly clean­cut poor people you’ve seen since your high school’s production of Oliver! But let’s not forget that it jauntily depicts some truly harrowing things—the rape and assault of our heroine, gang violence, the murder of our hero’s mother because of her Islamic faith, and the crushing poverty of nearly everyone on screen. Thank goodness for that game show, the host’s recognition of Jamal’s innate virtue and that final stroke of luck that allows him to fulfill his destiny. The problem with Slumdog Millionaire is that it ends, that you can come out of the theater thinking something has been fixed, that such luck is possible for everybody. I enjoyed the film, but this is where I get off the bandwagon. Optimism is one thing, but a contrivance of plot that removes itself so far from reality so as to overly simplify it is quite another. Rubina Ali, 9, played the character of Latika as a child in the movie, a rags- to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show. Ali's one-room shack was among several illegal dwellings demolished in a slum adjacent to railway tracks overlooking the posh Bandra suburb, home to many Bollywood stars in India's financial capital. "They can stay with me for now," said Moinuddin Qureshi, Ali's uncle, who stays in a nearby shack surrounded by open sewers. "But they will obviously have to rebuild it, they need a roof over their heads." A despondent Ali was helping her mother pick up wooden planks and salvage household belongings from the site, a Reuters photographer at the scene said. Authorities said Ali's shack was among 40 illegally built shanties removed as apart of a demolition drive. "These structures were on railway land, which is for the benefit of commuters and to be used by the railways," said C. Nitin Kumar David, a spokesman for Western Railway. Last week, "Slumdog" child star Azharuddin Ismail's tarpaulin-covered home, illegally built along a drain close to Ali's shack, was demolished by city authorities.
