  • The Poverty Tour: Life in the Slums of Mumbai and Manila As Seen in Danny Boyle’S Slumdog Millionaire and Merlinda Bobis’S the Solemn Lantern Maker
ATLANTIS Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies 37.1 (June 2015): 101-119 issn 0210-6124 The Poverty Tour: Life in the Slums of Mumbai and Manila as Seen in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire and Merlinda Bobis’s The Solemn Lantern Maker Feidhlim Hanrahan Universidade de Vigo [email protected] In the twenty-first century Mumbai and Manila, lingering postcolonial issues have merged with contemporary issues of globalisation and neo-imperialism as both India and the Philippines are faced with the realities of Western hegemony. This article will examine how the creators of the film Slumdog Millionaire and the novel The Solemn Lantern Maker, both from 2008, have chosen to portray these similar realities in different ways. Two major questions could be asked about these texts. Has British director Danny Boyle fallen into the trap of Orientalism, as outlined by Said in 1978, glamorising the abject poverty of the Mumbai slums, making them look appealingly exotic under a Western gaze? Is the Philippine-Australian author Merlinda Bobis’s representation of the penury of Manila’s street children, from their huts to shopping malls, passing through an underworld of sex tourism, a more authentic representation than Boyle’s? Or is it merely a native informant’s appeal for global readership? These postcolonial texts have become commodities in a global market, where their marketing in the Western world by global media corporations affects their reception and interpretation. Keywords: Danny Boyle; Merlinda Bobis; postcolonial exotic; neo-imperialism; globalisation; poverty .

I don't know when my birthday is, and nor does my father, but I do know that I am nine years old.” Rubina came from one of the slums of Mumbai, living in the Garib Nagar slum near Bandra station. She lives with her father Rafiq, her sister Sana, her brother Abbas and her stepmother Munni. Rubina's biological mother, Khurshid (alias Khushi), after divorcing Rafiq, married Monish, a Hindu. Her father married Munni and Rubina was raised by her father and stepmother. Munni has four children from her past marriage - Suraiya, Sanjida, Babu and Irfan. Following the success of Slumdog Millionaire at the 2009 Academy Awards, the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority recommended the children be rehoused, with an official saying the children had "brought laurels to the country" and deserved to be rewarded. On 25 February 2009, the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority announced that Azharuddin as well as Rubina would be given "free houses" so that they would no longer have to live in the Mumbai slum of Garib Nagar.

  • Film Assignment 07 Slumdog Millionaire
GEOG110: World Regional Geography Prof. Brian Cacchiotti Sections 002, 004 Fall 2009 Film Assignment 07 Slumdog Millionaire Our seventh film… Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Danny Boyle, director with Loveleen Tandan (co-director: India); Simon Beaufoy (screenplay) and Vikas Swarup (novel). Starring: Dev Patel (Jamal Malik), Anil Kapoor (Prem Kumar), Saurabh Shukla (Sergeant Srinivas), Rajendranath Zutshi (Director), Freida Pinto (Latika), Irrfan Khan (Police Inspector), Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail (Youngest Salim), Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (Youngest Jamal), Sunil Kumar Agrawal (Mr Chi), Mahesh Manjrekar (Javed), Sanchita Choudhary (Jamal's Mother), Himanshu Tyagi (Mr Nanda) Slumdog Millionaire is the rags (literally) to riches(?) story of a group of slum children, insultingly referred to as slumdogs. There are so many things to be watchful of in this film – from the simple horid conditions of the slum dwellers lives, to the violence that seems to invade so many aspects of life on the streets, to the causal reasons for our young protagonists plight (religious clashes.) Since this is such a fast paced film, I will give you the plot summary from Wikipedia: Set in 2006, the film opens in Mumbai with a policeman torturing Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a former street child from the Juhu slums. In the opening scene, a title card is presented: "Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20 million rupees. How did he do it? (A) He cheated, (B) He's lucky, (C) He's a genius, (D) It is written." Jamal is a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Kaun Banega Crorepati) hosted by Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor).

LOGIN POP CULTURE MAY 20, 2009, 07:19AM Nobody Likes a Tourist Matt Poland [/authors/Matt%20Poland] The reallife fallout from Slumdog Millionaire’s success reveals some terrible truths about India, Hollywood, and the American media. Tweet 0 Share [] Slumdog Millionaire is a movie that thrives on its gorgeous improbability, not to mention the allsingingalldancing talents of the most appealingly cleancut poor people you’ve seen since your high school’s production of Oliver! But let’s not forget that it jauntily depicts some truly harrowing things—the rape and assault of our heroine, gang violence, the murder of our hero’s mother because of her Islamic faith, and the crushing poverty of nearly everyone on screen. Thank goodness for that game show, the host’s recognition of Jamal’s innate virtue and that final stroke of luck that allows him to fulfill his destiny. The problem with Slumdog Millionaire is that it ends, that you can come out of the theater thinking something has been fixed, that such luck is possible for everybody. I enjoyed the film, but this is where I get off the bandwagon. Optimism is one thing, but a contrivance of plot that removes itself so far from reality so as to overly simplify it is quite another. The reality comes on like a champagne hangover: last summer, the World Bank estimated [http://www.worldbank.org.in/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/COUNTRIES/SOUTHASIAEXT/INDIAEXTN/0,,contentMDK:21880805~pagePK:141137~piPK:141127~theSitePK:295584,00.html] that approximately 42 percent of India’s population lives under the poverty line, and UNICEF now reports [http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/india_background.html] that 12.6 million Indian children under the age of 14 engage in hazardous occupations.

Second Slumdog child star's home torn down | Reuters.com Page 1 of 1 Print | Close this window Second "Slumdog" child star's home torn down Wed May 20, 2009 10:35am EDT By Shilpa Jamkhandikar MUMBAI (Reuters) - Railway authorities in Mumbai tore down the shanty home of another "Slumdog Millionaire" child star on Wednesday, barely a week after a first child actor from the Oscar-winning film was forced into the streets. Rubina Ali, 9, played the character of Latika as a child in the movie, a rags- to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show. Ali's one-room shack was among several illegal dwellings demolished in a slum adjacent to railway tracks overlooking the posh Bandra suburb, home to many Bollywood stars in India's financial capital. "They can stay with me for now," said Moinuddin Qureshi, Ali's uncle, who stays in a nearby shack surrounded by open sewers. "But they will obviously have to rebuild it, they need a roof over their heads." A despondent Ali was helping her mother pick up wooden planks and salvage household belongings from the site, a Reuters photographer at the scene said. Authorities said Ali's shack was among 40 illegally built shanties removed as apart of a demolition drive. "These structures were on railway land, which is for the benefit of commuters and to be used by the railways," said C. Nitin Kumar David, a spokesman for Western Railway. Last week, "Slumdog" child star Azharuddin Ismail's tarpaulin-covered home, illegally built along a drain close to Ali's shack, was demolished by city authorities.
