Film Assignment 07 Slumdog Millionaire GEOG110: World Regional Geography Prof. Brian Cacchiotti Sections 002, 004 Fall 2009 Film Assignment 07 Slumdog Millionaire Our seventh film… Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Danny Boyle, director with Loveleen Tandan (co-director: India); Simon Beaufoy (screenplay) and Vikas Swarup (novel). Starring: Dev Patel (Jamal Malik), Anil Kapoor (Prem Kumar), Saurabh Shukla (Sergeant Srinivas), Rajendranath Zutshi (Director), Freida Pinto (Latika), Irrfan Khan (Police Inspector), Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail (Youngest Salim), Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (Youngest Jamal), Sunil Kumar Agrawal (Mr Chi), Mahesh Manjrekar (Javed), Sanchita Choudhary (Jamal's Mother), Himanshu Tyagi (Mr Nanda) Slumdog Millionaire is the rags (literally) to riches(?) story of a group of slum children, insultingly referred to as slumdogs. There are so many things to be watchful of in this film – from the simple horid conditions of the slum dwellers lives, to the violence that seems to invade so many aspects of life on the streets, to the causal reasons for our young protagonists plight (religious clashes.) Since this is such a fast paced film, I will give you the plot summary from Wikipedia: Set in 2006, the film opens in Mumbai with a policeman torturing Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a former street child from the Juhu slums. In the opening scene, a title card is presented: "Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20 million rupees. How did he do it? (A) He cheated, (B) He's lucky, (C) He's a genius, (D) It is written." Jamal is a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Kaun Banega Crorepati) hosted by Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor). He has already won 10,000,000 rupees (about US$200,000) and has made it to the final question, for 20,000,000 rupees, scheduled for the next day. Following up on a tip-off from Prem Kumar, the police now suspect Jamal of cheating, because the other possibilities -- that he has a vast knowledge, or that he is very lucky -- seem unlikely. For almost every question, Jamal had a life experience that enabled him to answer it. Jamal then explains that, while at least the question about Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan was very simple, he knew the answers of most questions by chance, because of things that happened in his life, conveyed in a series of flashbacks documenting the details of his childhood. This includes scenes of him obtaining Bachchan's autograph, the death of his mother during anti-Muslim violence (rekindling memory of the 1993 anti-Muslim attacks in Mumbai in the slums),[6] and how he and his brother Salim befriended Latika (Rubina Ali). He refers to Salim and himself as Athos and Porthos, and Latika as the third Musketeer, the name of whom they never knew. In Jamal's flashback, the children are eventually discovered by Maman (Ankur Vikal) while they are living in the trash heaps. Maman is a gangster (a fact they do not actually know at the time they meet him) who pretends to run an orphanage in order to "collect" street children so that he can ultimately train them to beg for money. Salim is groomed to become a part of Maman’s operation and is asked to bring Jamal to Maman in order to be blinded (which would improve his income potential as a singing beggar). Salim protects his brother, and the three children try to escape, but only he and Jamal are able to do so, catching up to a train which is departing. Latika catches up and takes Salim's hand, but Salim purposely lets go, and she is left behind as the train accelerates away. The brothers make a living, traveling on top of trains, selling goods, picking pockets, and cheating naive tourists at the Taj Mahal by pretending to be tour guides. Jamal eventually insists that they return to Mumbai since he wishes to locate Latika, which annoys Salim. They eventually find her, discovering that she had been raised by Maman to be a culturally talented prostitute whose virginity will fetch a high price. The brothers attempt to rescue her, but Maman intrudes, and in the resulting conflict Salim draws a gun and kills Maman. Salim then uses the fact that he killed Maman to obtain a job with Javed (Mahesh Manjrekar), a rival crime lord. Salim returns to the room where the three were staying and orders Jamal to leave. Jamal, knowing his brother is here to claim Latika as his own, attacks his brother violently before being overturned by Salim and confronted by a revolver as Salim threatens to kill him. Latika intervenes and tells Jamal to leave, sacrificing herself to keep him safe. With Maman's men searching for Salim, Salim and Latika flee to an unknown location, leaving Jamal alone to fend for himself. Years later, Jamal has a position as a tea server at a call center. When he is asked to cover for a co-worker for a couple of minutes, he searches the database for Salim and Latika and succeeds in getting in touch with Salim, who has become a high-ranking lieutenant in Javed’s organization. Jamal confronts a regretful Salim on tense terms. Jamal asks him where Latika is. Salim, annoyed and bewildered that his brother still cares about her, responds she's "long gone." Salim invites Jamal to live with him, and after Jamal follows him to Javed's house, he sees Latika (Freida Pinto) there, and she also notices him. He bluffs his way in, pretending initially to be a chef and then later a dishwasher. Jamal and Latika have an emotional reunion, but elation quickly turns to despair after Jamal discovers that Latika is betrothed to Javed. Upon discovering this, Jamal tries to persuade Latika to leave. She rebuffs his advances and insists that he forget about her and leave, but instead Jamal confesses his love for her and promises to wait for her every day at 5 p.m. at Mumbai's largest train station, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (C.S.T.), until she comes. One day, while Jamal waits there, Latika attempts to rendezvous with him, but she is recaptured by Salim and Javed's men. Javed slashes her cheek with a knife as Salim drives off, leaving a furious Jamal behind with a crowd of onlookers. Jamal again loses contact with Latika when Javed moves to another house outside of Mumbai. In another attempt to find Latika, Jamal tries out for the popular game show because he knows that she will be watching. He makes it to the final question, despite the hostile attitude of the host who feeds Jamal a wrong answer during a break. At the end of the show, Jamal has one question left to win two crore, or 20 million rupees (about $400,000 U.S. dollars), but the host calls the police and Jamal is taken into police custody, where he is tortured as the police attempt to learn how he, a simple "slumdog," could know the answers to so many questions. After Jamal tells his whole story, explaining how his life experiences coincidentally enabled him to know the answer to each question, the police inspector calls Jamal's explanation "bizarrely plausible" and, knowing he's not in it for the money, allows him to return to the show for the final question. At Javed's safehouse, Latika watches the news coverage of Jamal's miraculous run on the show. Salim gives Latika his phone and the keys to his car. He urges her to run away and to "forgive him for what he has done." The final question asked of Jamal is to name the third musketeer in the story of The Three Musketeers. When Jamal uses his Phone-A-Friend lifeline to call Salim, Latika barely answers the phone in time and they reconnect. She does not know the answer to the final question either but she tells Jamal that she is safe and said "I am yours" in unsubtitled Hindi before the line cuts off. Jamal guesses the correct answer (Aramis) to the question of the one The Three Musketeer whose name they never learned, and wins the grand prize. Simultaneously, Salim is discovered to have helped Latika escape and allows himself to be killed in a bathtub full of money after shooting and killing Javed. Salim's last words were "God is great." Later that night, Jamal and Latika meet at the railway station and they share a kiss. It is then revealed that the correct answer to the opening question is "D) it is written," implying that it is destiny. During the end credits, in a scene reminiscent of many Bollywood musicals, they -- along with dozens of bystanders and even the juvenile versions of themselves - - dance in the C.S.T. train station to the song "Jai Ho," the title of which epitomizes victory. This is an interesting film… but it is certainly not a documentary – in fact, it is much more of a fantasy! We watched a real documentary in class called Slum Futures: Mumbai . In that short film we witnessed a much more realistic view of life in the slums. Remember that this is an artistic creation and it is not a documentary… but it does show us a glimpse into the world of Mumbai, and from this glimpse I hope you can find some insights into this very different world of Jamal and the millions of people like him. In class we also discussed issues relating to poverty and homelessness, both of course relating directly to the incredible population (and population density) present in many parts of India.

ATLANTIS Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies 37.1 (June 2015): 101-119 issn 0210-6124 The Poverty Tour: Life in the Slums of Mumbai and Manila as Seen in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire and Merlinda Bobis’s The Solemn Lantern Maker Feidhlim Hanrahan Universidade de Vigo [email protected] In the twenty-first century Mumbai and Manila, lingering postcolonial issues have merged with contemporary issues of globalisation and neo-imperialism as both India and the Philippines are faced with the realities of Western hegemony. This article will examine how the creators of the film Slumdog Millionaire and the novel The Solemn Lantern Maker, both from 2008, have chosen to portray these similar realities in different ways. Two major questions could be asked about these texts. Has British director Danny Boyle fallen into the trap of Orientalism, as outlined by Said in 1978, glamorising the abject poverty of the Mumbai slums, making them look appealingly exotic under a Western gaze? Is the Philippine-Australian author Merlinda Bobis’s representation of the penury of Manila’s street children, from their huts to shopping malls, passing through an underworld of sex tourism, a more authentic representation than Boyle’s? Or is it merely a native informant’s appeal for global readership? These postcolonial texts have become commodities in a global market, where their marketing in the Western world by global media corporations affects their reception and interpretation. Keywords: Danny Boyle; Merlinda Bobis; postcolonial exotic; neo-imperialism; globalisation; poverty .

She lives with her father Rafiq, her sister Sana, her brother Abbas and her stepmother Munni. Rubina's biological mother, Khurshid (alias Khushi), after divorcing Rafiq, married Monish, a Hindu. Her father married Munni and Rubina was raised by her father and stepmother. Munni has four children from her past marriage - Suraiya, Sanjida, Babu and Irfan. Following the success of Slumdog Millionaire at the 2009 Academy Awards, the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority recommended the children be rehoused, with an official saying the children had "brought laurels to the country" and deserved to be rewarded. On 25 February 2009, the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority announced that Azharuddin as well as Rubina would be given "free houses" so that they would no longer have to live in the Mumbai slum of Garib Nagar.

Tweet 0 Share [] Slumdog Millionaire is a movie that thrives on its gorgeous improbability, not to mention the allsingingalldancing talents of the most appealingly cleancut poor people you’ve seen since your high school’s production of Oliver! But let’s not forget that it jauntily depicts some truly harrowing things—the rape and assault of our heroine, gang violence, the murder of our hero’s mother because of her Islamic faith, and the crushing poverty of nearly everyone on screen. Thank goodness for that game show, the host’s recognition of Jamal’s innate virtue and that final stroke of luck that allows him to fulfill his destiny. The problem with Slumdog Millionaire is that it ends, that you can come out of the theater thinking something has been fixed, that such luck is possible for everybody. I enjoyed the film, but this is where I get off the bandwagon. Optimism is one thing, but a contrivance of plot that removes itself so far from reality so as to overly simplify it is quite another. The reality comes on like a champagne hangover: last summer, the World Bank estimated [http://www.worldbank.org.in/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/COUNTRIES/SOUTHASIAEXT/INDIAEXTN/0,,contentMDK:21880805~pagePK:141137~piPK:141127~theSitePK:295584,00.html] that approximately 42 percent of India’s population lives under the poverty line, and UNICEF now reports [http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/india_background.html] that 12.6 million Indian children under the age of 14 engage in hazardous occupations.

Second Slumdog child star's home torn down | Reuters.com Page 1 of 1 Print | Close this window Second "Slumdog" child star's home torn down Wed May 20, 2009 10:35am EDT By Shilpa Jamkhandikar MUMBAI (Reuters) - Railway authorities in Mumbai tore down the shanty home of another "Slumdog Millionaire" child star on Wednesday, barely a week after a first child actor from the Oscar-winning film was forced into the streets. Rubina Ali, 9, played the character of Latika as a child in the movie, a rags- to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show. Ali's one-room shack was among several illegal dwellings demolished in a slum adjacent to railway tracks overlooking the posh Bandra suburb, home to many Bollywood stars in India's financial capital. "They can stay with me for now," said Moinuddin Qureshi, Ali's uncle, who stays in a nearby shack surrounded by open sewers. "But they will obviously have to rebuild it, they need a roof over their heads." A despondent Ali was helping her mother pick up wooden planks and salvage household belongings from the site, a Reuters photographer at the scene said. Authorities said Ali's shack was among 40 illegally built shanties removed as apart of a demolition drive. "These structures were on railway land, which is for the benefit of commuters and to be used by the railways," said C. Nitin Kumar David, a spokesman for Western Railway. Last week, "Slumdog" child star Azharuddin Ismail's tarpaulin-covered home, illegally built along a drain close to Ali's shack, was demolished by city authorities.
