professor ofenglish at brigham young university hugh nibley is generally recognized as the finest scholarly defender of the latter day saint faith of the late twentieth century I1 hope that he will before too long be recognized for a much greater achievement he is the finest lay as opposed to officially called prophet of the latter day saint people apart from the old testa- ment book of mormon and latter day saint prophets he has learned from he most perceptively describes our sins most cou- rageously and persistently calls us to repentance and most accu- rately predicts our future if we will not repent but nibleysNibleys prophetic gift has been much like that of cassandra the trojan king priamipriams daughter who was blessed to be able to predict the future infallibly but cursed that no one would believe her he has been uniquely insightful and yet essentially ineffective his immense scholarship in support of the divinity of joseph smiths mission and the historical authenticity of the book of mormon and pearl of great price scholarship that he claims is not very important to him or worth much to god has won him great renown at all levels of the church this semiofficial relatively minor ones of bleysnibleysNi cassandra like blessing and his curse tens of thousands cling to his every word about the scriptures but ignore his prophetic social commentary which I1 believe is much more valu- able and will outlast his apologetics he has become his own best evidence for his claim that latter day saints ignore or suppress prophetic statements that hit them where they live in their prejudices or pocketbooks he has so far had very little effect on the response of his readers to three major issues he has spoken much about materialism militarism and pollution nibley is master of a remarkably clear and readable prose given that he indulges somewhat in densely textured scriptural quotation and paraphrase and learned allusions he is widely read in classical and contemporary materials but his social analysis is most heavily indebted to joseph smith brigham young the old testament and the book of mormon sources he uses with proper respect for context of time and place I1 find his arguments meticu- lously worked through his central repeated message frighteningly convincing and his witty fearless personal voice constantly sat- isfying often exhilarating even capable ofan occasional moral and rhetorical tour de force what we read about in the book of mormon is the nephite disease and we have it we should be glad that we do not have the much worse diseases that infect some other societies and that there is greater hope for us but diabetes if neglected can kill one just as dead as cancer after all the nephitesNephites were terminated we can be striv- ing for wealth satansgatans way makes those things central god gives his gifts for our mortal sustenance freely assuring us that he provides enough and to spare dacd&c 10417 and that his way to make certain that all have enough is that the poor shall be exalted in that the rich are made low dacd&c 10416 god asks us to recognize that he not our own work or deserving is the source of the gifts that in order to be saved we share our gifts with whoever is poorer than ourselves until all are equal for if ye are not equal in earthly things ye cannot be equal in obtaining heavenly things dacd&c 786 and that we share and become equal not grudgingly dacd&c 7014 cultivating charity as the highest virtue satan teaches us that we live in a harsh world where we must work hard in striving for wealth there is no free lunch and even education is to be measured only in increased income what we thereby earn is our own to use however we wish not to be shared freely token tithing for fire insurance and occasional gifts to keep up appearances are OK but to be amassed consumed and passed on to children in babylon the highest virtue is justice which usually means mainly that you can do whatever it takes to get what you deserve and you must take vengeance on others for any 11 offenses in fact satan frankly warns he will use riches to seduce religious and military leaders and with these riches they will reign with violence and terror until christ comes nibley claims that latter day saints have essentially chosen babylon we still want to have it both ways and so continue to pay ROM THE VERY earliest days in the 1830s, of what they called “the Restora - F tion,” the leaders of a tiny American sect known as Mormonism, though reviled and persecuted and driven, have constantly repeated the astounding claim that their church would not only succeed but would grow into a world religion—in fact, the world religion. The Lord promised Joseph of Egypt that in the last days a “choice seer” would come through his lineage and would bring his seed to a knowledge of the covenants made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (2 Ne. 3:7; jst Gen. 50:27–28). “That seer will the Lord bless,” Joseph prophesied, specifi- cally indicating that “his name shall be called after me” (2 Ne. 3:14–15; see also jst Gen. 50:33). Significantly, in the revelation received dur- ing the organizational meeting of the Church on April 6, 1830, the first title given to the first elder was that of seer: “Behold, there shall be a record kept . and in it thou [Joseph Smith] shalt be called a seer, a translator, a prophet, an apostle of Jesus Christ” (D&C 21:1). In the Book of Mormon, Ammon defined a seer as one who pos- sessed “a gift from God” to translate ancient records (Mosiah 8:13; see also 28:11–16). However, the seeric gift is not limited to translation, hence Ammon’s additional statement that “a seer is a revelator and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater can no man have” (Mosiah 8:16).

    Of Many Hearts and Many Minds: The Mormon Novel and the Post-Utopian Challenge of Assimilation by Scott Hales A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English & Comparative Literature APPROVED: Jay Twomey, Chair Jennifer Glaser Leland S. Person March 26, 2014 Cincinnati, OH For much of their nineteenth-century history, Mormons rejected the novel as worldly entertainment that corrupted the young and propagated offensive Mormon stereotypes. This changed, however, when Mormons began to recognize the form’s potential for promoting social betterment, teaching wholesome moral values, and using its popular appeal to draw people to the Mormon fold. Interestingly, this shift in attitude toward the novel came at a time when the Mormons, once a militantly separatist people, sought greater assimilation with the American mainstream by abandoning overt utopian practices, like polygamy and communal living, for practices that would no longer alienate them from the nation’s Protestant majority. In my dissertation, I explore the relationship between this transitional period and the development of the Mormon novel, arguing that Mormons embraced the novel as a cultural site for mediating their paradoxical desire to separate from and participate in the American mainstream. Indeed, I show how the novel allowed Mormons to express their utopian principles—if not their utopian practices—as mainstream America compelled them to take what I call a “post-utopian” stance toward society. Moreover, I show how adopting the novel form also enabled Mormons to contribute to and engage American literary culture, construct Mormon identities, and explore their ambivalent encounters with others from inside and outside their ranks.

Cracroft This essay overviews Eugene England’s many contributions toward the creation of a vibrant Mormon literary culture as a founder and contributor to journals and various organizations, as Mormon literature’s primary anthologizer, as well as through his own writing. For years I have been wailing for someone to do justice in recording in song and story and painting and sculpture the story of the Restoration, the reestablishment of the kingdom of God on earth, the struggles and frustra - tions, the apostasies and inner revolutions and counter-revolutions of those first decades [of Mormonism]. —SPEncER W. EugEnE EnglAnd And thE lightEd lAmp CAn’t REAd Eugene England’s personal essays as a critic. i am too much a i part of the natural audience for his words. i can’t step outside and dispassionately watch his transaction with his readers. i am caught up, captured, possessed, and for a time i see the world through his eyes. later, after reflection, i can report on the experience. that is as close to “criti - cism” as i can come. it is perhaps the only sort of criticism appropriate for such essays. For Eugene England’s commitment to the Church, his truthfulness of vision, his simple clarity of expression defy criticism by any detached standard. in fact, England implicitly denies the virtue of detachment. if your whole self is not involved in what he has to say, then he is not speaking to you at all; and if he is not speaking to you, then you have real cause for self-doubt, for he is speaking to all men and women of good heart. So what you will read here is not an analysis; at times it may not seem to be “about” England’s book at all. it is instead what reading England’s words made me want to say, not to him, but to fellow members of his intended audience.

F. Cummings’ failure to get Church help in publishing, or even selling, his fine book, The Eternal Individual Self , and the more well-known story of the removal and long exclusion of Joseph Smith’s “King Follett discourse” from B. h. roberts’ History of the Church , Cummings discussed what he called “the clash between institutional au - thority and individual integrity and between the imperative of blind obedience and the claims of reasoned belief.” With considerable forthrightness, Cummings spoke of a problem which is for many the most anguishing problem in Mormon experi - ence—the struggle to maintain individual integrity, to be true to ourselves in the face of pressures to obey, to conform, to overlook what seem to Cummings and oth - ers to be “clear fallacies or even tyrannies in the strictly authoritarian pattern,” especially to keep faith with ourselves in the face of misunderstanding, hostility, even ostracism from our brothers and sisters and disapproval, even disciplinary action, from those in authority over us in the Church.
