St. St.John John theApril 4,the 2021 Evangelist Evangelist RomanRoman Catholic Catholic Church Church Inspired by our Patron, St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Center Moriches seeks to bring the light of Christ to a world in need, so that as Christ has done, we may also do. From the celebration of the Eucharist, we are sent forth to serve God and neighbor through ministries of formation, education and outreach. —Mission Statement The Resurrection of the Lord April 4, 2021 “To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him St. John thewill Evangelist receive forgiveness ofwww.sjecm.org sins through his name. ” -Acts 10:43 Page 1 April 4, 2021 WHAT’S HAPPENING @ SJE St. John the Evangelist www.sjecm.org Page 2 April 4, 2021 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK The Easter Turn Dear Parish Family: A family friend of mine recently failed his road test. He had worked hard and thought he was prepared. His instructor did and so did this family friend, the priest. The DMV had another opin- ion, in spite of my novenas and prayers. He did not pass, according to the test administrator, because of his left turns. I think about Mary Magadalene today. In both of the Gospels we use on Easter Sunday (Mark and John), Mary Magdalene is the first at the tomb and in both gospels she’s one of the last at the cross. In his book, O Death, Where is Thy Sting?, Brother Joe Hoover, S.J. writes (65): Mary Magdalene at the worst moment of her life—not only did they torture and kill her friend and savior, but now they have stolen his body. All she wants to know is where they have taken him. Can you please tell me, sir? For the love of God, couldn’t they leave well enough alone? After all they did to him, and it still wasn’t enough? And then she turns. She turns, and there, in front of her. Stay one minute longer, and the Lord will appear. We who have been at the cross in many ways over these weeks, months, years, and for most of us, a life time have a choice to make. We will make the turn. If not, today might just be a waste of our time. Let me explain. If we really celebrate these mysteries, if Easter is not a show or an appearance, then we have to try and turn. It’s a turn we make with confidence that Jesus is there. Admittedly at times I’m not sure I want to make the turn. For some of us, we’re just stuck. We’re in a rut, overwhelmed, exhausted, stressed, angry, and so on and so on. We can say, “For love of God” enough is enough. Yet, if we are an Easter people, we keep going. We accept setback and challenges. We come through adversities and struggles. Simply, we never give up. As I write this letter, there is a chance that if we don’t make some serious choices we may face another surge of people becoming infected (and being admitted to hospitals and dying) with COVID-19. As I read a variety of reports from a variety of sources, we do no need to hunker down, make some more sacrifices and keep going. How many of us will make the turn? Or will we stay in the places of “I’m done”, “I don’t care”, “It’s their fault”, “I want it my way”, “I’m not changing” and so on. What if Mary Magdalene stopped there? Frustrated it did not work out as she hoped. Disappointed in the disciples. Caught up in her self with no concern for others. Remaining in the blame game. Yet, she is willing to turn. In doing so, she encounters the Savior of the world. This is the work of the paschal mystery—of encountering Jesus’ dying and rising. We can stay at the tomb, in the death, in the despair. Or we can turn. Can we turn from anger and hate to hope? Can we turn from isolation to a willingness to become involved in caring for the lives of others? Can we turn from blame to honest self-examination? Can we turn from an attitude of “I can do it on my own” to “I need help”? Can we turn from self-preservation to a selflessness on behalf of the other? I hope I can make the turn. I hope you can too. For some, maybe the turn is returning to the life of the church, and particularly the parish here at SJE. As you look through this bulletin, I hope you will find many ways to turn to God in prayer, to learn more about our faith, to gather with this community of faith, to share your gifts with those in need and, yes, even to allow us to serve and minister to you. Our parish, and certainly it’s pastor is not perfect, but we are a community of faith try- ing our best to bring others closer to Christ and his Church. I hope you can consider making a turn here (not just on Ocean Avenue or off of Main Street) but with your heart. Know you are most welcome and wanted here. My friend take his next road test (today on this Tuesday of Holy Week). He’s made a lot of good life turns over the past few months. I hope he makes some good turns today on the road and his life in the years to come...I hope we do too! Please say a prayer for me! Happy Easter! From the enormous amount of work to prepare for this day to the celebration of the liturgies and prayer (picture from the Rectory Chapel) to care for the poor and the vulnerable...we “go forth”! We have many reasons for gratitude—to our incredible Art and Environment Ministry, our school and parish maintenance staff setting up three locations for Mass, our sacristans and their families organizing liturgies in three places and two languages, our liturgical and music ministers, presiders, those who sponsored families and those who distributed nearly 50 Easter meals! If you’re visiting our church today, what about getting involved in the mission of the Catholic Church here at SJE? To get started, contact the Rectory at 631.878.0009 or email to [email protected] or visit our website. Go Forth—Part II...with new wheels! Thank you to God for working through an incredibly generous donor who provided the parish with the resources for our new Street Ministry van. Our existing van, donated to us by the Catholic Faith Network, has served us very well and will now go into partial retirement and assist our Street Ministry and maintenance staff. We blessed the van on Thursday, March 18, 2021. This nove- na is another way for us to reach out – or better yet – allow Jesus to reach out to us with the hand of mercy and compassion. In her Diary, Jesus told St. Faustina, “I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that from there they may draw strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death” (Diary, 1209). While the Chaplet can be said anytime, the Lord specifically asked that it be recited as a novena, promising that “By this Novena (of Chaplets), I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary 796). Pamphlets are available as you leave the Church for those who are interested in praying the Divine Mercy Novena. Let us ask Christ for the gift of mercy. Let it engulf us and penetrate us. Let us have the courage to come back to Jesus to meet His love and mercy in the sacraments….let us feel His closeness and ten- derness, and then we will also be more capable of mercy, patience, forgiveness, and love.” Did you receive our Easter Mailing? If so, please consider supporting the ongoing work of SJE! Return your envelope or make your offering at www.sjecm.org. If you did not receive a mailing, please let us know. The Rite of Christian Initiation encourages the Church to bring the Elect together for some time and prayer. Ideally, this would take place on Holy Saturday but because of the nature of this day in the parish, we celebrated this day at the beginning of Holy Week.
