OK...the truth is that the speaker who was scheduled to come was diagnosed with COVID-19 a few days before the presentation. So I guess it wasn’t a “We’d love to have you Fr. John”...it was more of a “Well, are you doing anything on Tuesday, Fr. John?” Either way, it was an honor to be back in the midst of a great faculty, many of whom I had the chance to work with when I served as the principal. We focused our afternoon of talk, reflection and Mass as a time to reflect where we have been as a school this past academic year as well as over the past year of pandemic. It was around this time last year when we were in our first week of full-time virtual learning. I think we each need some time to process. I find myself reliving some of those days from last March. Maybe you do too? It seems each day the memory of another loss or an encounter or another change or another adjustment or another hurt pops back into my mind. I’m sure you have your litany of things as I have mine. Important to note, too, the many, many graces and blessings have flowed through this difficult time as well. I find myself grieving a little over the past few weeks. I remember lives lost—so many from COVID-19. I recall mourning the passing of loved ones so differently. I think of how different it is to be a person in ministry and service these days. I realize I have become a little quieter and more reserved. I admit, too, that I am more easily frustrated and angered at times with others who don’t see things the way I do. I consider how I am a little more anxious about certain things than I was a year ago. I reflect on the struggle of finances and lifestyle changes for so many in our community and within our parish itself. I find as I try to take some more time and reflection for quiet prayer, I tear up a bit or my heart skips a beat or one person or another pops into my mind. It’s part of grieving, I think. Can I ask you to give yourself some permission to grieve this Holy Week? There isn’t a better week for Catholics to do it. We focus on the Paschal Mystery most profoundly in these days. This week, we begin with the story of the agony of the passion and realize God’s incredible love for us. We’re invited to encounter that mercy and love in Reconciliation, particularly on Monday. We remember the gift of the Eucharist and the call to service on Holy Thursday. We gather on a day we call “good” but brings us to some of the darkest parts of history and humanity. And, we finally sing, “Alleluia” with the celebrations of Easter. Try to come to these days where you’re at—maybe a darker place, maybe not so much. Come with your pain, anger, loss, worry, fear and whatever you’re holding. Then, journey this week with Jesus. Feel his pain and agony but give yourself permission to be set free from it all. Link to the moments of denial and betrayal but give yourself permission to allow Jesus’ resurrection to overcome all that you face in those areas. Admit the sinfulness and hate that fill you at times but give yourself permission to receive his mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Acknowledge the loneliness and isolation of these times but give yourself permission to remember you belong to a community of faith that is doing it’s best to mirror God’s love and compassion. Come forward and acknowledge the cross that is yours but give yourself permission to use that cross to bring you new life and hope. I hope you will make that journey here at SJE. We have worked—in the midst of the realities of these days—to create many ways for you to grieve and mourn and be better ready for the hope and new life of Easter. Please say a prayer for me. HOLY THURSDAY Morning Prayer 9 a.m. —Church + Presider: Fr. John The Church comes together on this morning to seek God’s blessing and to give praise to the Lord! Come and pray as we prepare to enter the Triduum together. A member of our parish community will offer a reflection at Morning Prayer. Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper Mass 7:30 p.m. —Church + Presider: Bishop William Murphy This Mass recalls for us the institution of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Holy Or- ders. It is a wonderful way to begin the Triduum together. The Washing of the Feet, the Mandatum, is a reminder that each of us - clergy, religious and lay people, young and old – is called to be a servant to one another. Night Prayer 11:45 p.m. —Church + Presider: Seminarian Louis Visits to the repository will take place after Mass until 11:45 p.m. Night Prayer.
