Arthur Wec 3 Dear Parishioners, Catholics are invited to observe worldwide events, namely, World Day of Prayer for Vocations and World Day for Consecrated Life and National Vocation Awareness Week. Last weekend we were asked to support our seminarians preparing to become priests in Mundelein Seminary and we heard Deacon Matthew Jakupco asking us to pray for the seminarians and for many and holy vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. Today is Priesthood Sunday. It is a special day set aside to honor the priests in the United States, without whom the Mass could not be offered and Sacraments could not be celebrated. Priesthood Sunday was established in 2003 to provide a way for Catholic communities to express appreciation for the priests who serve them, even when media attention on the priesthood is often very negative. It is also a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. Without priests the Holy Sacraments simply could not be conferred. With the shortage of vocations, and only a few new priests being ordained every year, more and more priests have serve two or more parishes and have additional duties such as chaplains, teachers, and retreat masters. The spiritual works of priests are wide-ranging and, for most of us, go unknown. Outside of weekday and weekend Masses, many Catholics in the pews do not have a lot of opportunities to engage with priests. However, when there is a serious illness or death in the family, when a wedding is announced or a baby arrives, priests are called upon to provide spiritual guidance. It is essential to note that the number of priests and ordinations in the United States has steadily declined in the past 50 years. Meanwhile, the number of parishes without a resident priest pastor has sharply increased in the same period of time. Therefore, Priesthood Sunday is a day to pray for our priests, praising God for their courage and their generosity.
