Dear Parishioners,

Catholics are invited to observe worldwide events, namely, World Day of Prayer for Vocations and World Day for Consecrated Life and National Vocation Awareness Week. Last weekend we were asked to support our seminarians preparing to become priests in Mundelein Seminary and we heard Deacon Matthew Jakupco asking us to pray for the seminarians and for many and holy vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life.

Today is Priesthood Sunday. It is a special day set aside to honor the priests in the United States, without whom the Mass could not be offered and Sacraments could not be celebrated.

Priesthood Sunday was established in 2003 to provide a way for Catholic communities to express appreciation for the priests who serve them, even when media attention on the priesthood is often very negative. It is also a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. Without priests the Holy Sacraments simply could not be conferred. With the shortage of vocations, and only a few new priests being ordained every year, more and more priests have serve two or more parishes and have additional duties such as chaplains, teachers, and retreat masters. The spiritual works of priests are wide-ranging and, for most of us, go unknown. Outside of weekday and weekend Masses, many Catholics in the pews do not have a lot of opportunities to engage with priests. However, when there is a serious illness or death in the family, when a wedding is announced or a baby arrives, priests are called upon to provide spiritual guidance.

It is essential to note that the number of priests and ordinations in the United States has steadily declined in the past 50 years. Meanwhile, the number of parishes without a resident priest pastor has sharply increased in the same period of time. Therefore, Priesthood Sunday is a day to pray for our priests, praising God for their courage and their generosity. A simple note, a smile or a few words to assure them of your loving care and gratitude for their presence in the life of our local church will go a long way to serve the greater good of our . Do not wait until a priest retires or is transferred to celebrate their service. Like Father’s Day, let Priesthood Sunday be the one day a year when we make it a point to make priests feel truly appreciated and special.

I humbly ask that when you pray the rosary, offer the first decade for the priest who baptized you, the second for the priest who gave you First Communion, the third for the who confirmed you, the fourth for the priest who witnessed your marriage (or will do so in the future), and the fifth decade for the priest who will anoint you at your death.

God bless, Fr. Gregg

4 Informacje parafialne

A wierni? Módlmy się, aby każdy kapłan z wiarą głosił Ewangelię Chrystusa, abyśmy Go wszyscy lepiej poznali i jeszcze mocniej pokochali.

7:30pm. Po Mszy wystawienie Najświętszego Sakramentu i Nabożeństwo do Najświętszego Serca Pana. Serdecznie zapraszamy.

Jesus: The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Our belief in Jesus is what makes us who we are. But do we really know him as we should? Is Jesus just a part of your life, or is he at the center of your life? St. John’s Adult Study invites you to join us for Jesus: The Way, the Truth, and the Life, a 10-week video study program that explores the entirety of Jesus’ life and what he means for us as Catholics today.

We will begin our Jesus Study on Tuesday, September 28, at 7:00 P.M. in the school annex. Participants will meet every week to view an engaging video presentation by noted biblical scholars Marcellino D’Ambrosio, Jeff Cavins, and Edward Sri. Filmed on location in the Holy Land it helps us to experience the world in which Jesus lived and taught. We will also engage in lively group discussion and fellowship.

For more information, please visit our website, www.mystjohns.org. Registration forms are available in the church gathering area and in the Parish Office. There is a $30 fee payable at the time of registration to cover the cost of materials needed for the study. We will be following safety procedures regarding the pandemic. Participants must wear a mask while in the annex.

If you would like to participate in the study but are unable to attend the Tuesday sessions, you may google Ascension Press for information on how to do a self-study at home. If you have any questions, please leave your name and number with the parish receptionist (630.837.6500) and one of our Bible Team members will contact you. We hope you will be able to join us as we seek to deepen our relationship with Jesus as he leads us to his Father in mercy and in love.

Pro-Life Life Chain

On October 3, 2021 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, our parish will join neighboring parishes in the annual Pro-Life Life Chain. Come join us as we testify by our presence, and through silent prayer, that all human life is sacred from conception until natural death. Our voiceless unborn brothers and sisters need our protection. We will meet in Streamwood at the corner of Park Blvd. and Irving Park Rd. by Lord's Auto Care. Signs that support life will be given out to each participant. You are welcome to bring a chair if you cannot stand. Join us for any part of the 90 minutes. For more information, please call the parish office at 630-837-6500.

The Blessing of the Animals will take place on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00 PM by the statue of St. Francis at the far end of the main parking lot, near the rectory.

Feel free to bring your pets to the church to be blessed on St. ’s feast day (October 4).

St. Francis is remembered for his generosity to the poor, his willingness to minister to the lepers, and for his love for animals and nature.

He is the Catholic Church’s patron of animals and the environment.

Men of St. John’s

If you haven’t experienced TMIY yet, we want to offer you the opportunity to join us each Saturday to begin your weekend in a positive way.

This year the people at Paradisus Dei have put together a wonderful collection of renowned speakers that will share their thoughts on the role of men in society today. We will be once again serving our fantastic breakfasts beginning at 7:00 AM. Many delicious casseroles, baked treats, donuts, fresh fruits, and other special concoctions have adorned our tables. After breakfast, we watch a short video presentation, and then break out into small groups for discussion. As most attendees will attest, this is the best part of the day, and a great way to start your weekend.

The beauty of this program is that you do not need to have attended previous years, or even make a commitment to attend every week. You come when you can and are welcomed back by all the men in attendance. There is no cost to participate and all men over the age of 18 are welcome to join us.

If you have any questions about these opportunities, or anything related to TMIY, please feel free to contact either Joe Quinlan at [email protected] or Kanyuh at [email protected].

On the Lighter Side..….

After the birth of his baby brother, a little boy was thoroughly annoyed at all of his crying and screaming.

“Where did we get him anyway?” he asked his mother.

“He came from heaven!” his mother replied.

“Well I can see why they threw him out!” the boy replied.
