From the Principal

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Good Shepherd Catholic College,

Swimming Carnival

I congratulate all students for their enthusiasm and conduct during Wednesday’s Inter-House

their friends. Oh, and yes, there were some great performances in the pool too!

Whole school events like the Swimming Carnival allow our culture and spirit to become Mr Wayne Wood College Principal obvious to our new students and parents. I thank Miss Dalla Vecchia and staff for organising

the day. IN THIS ISSUE:

Unfortunately there were a number of student absences on the day. The College has always

ANZAC Day ‒ Please join us!

This week our College Community will hold a special ANZAC Day ceremony in our Lumen Christi Centre.

It is important that our young people are able to reflect on their connection with their wider community and with their history. ANZAC Day provides them with a wonderful opportunity to do so. We want them to realise that they are intrinsically connected to each other and that they have a responsibility to support their fellow citizens. This is what community living is about.

Catholics, like most Christians, are people living in communion with each other. So while a personal belief in Jesus is essential, we also believe we are intrinsically connected with each other. Our faith cannot be an individual thing. We are therefore called to support each other.

I strongly encourage all students to support the College in our attendance at the Dawn Service and/or the Public March. Details for the Dawn Service and Public March can be found below.

God Bless

From the Deputy Principal Curriculum

Welcome back for Term 2. I hope that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Easter Season with family and friends, and I trust that our students are refreshed and recharged ready for the new term.

Parent-teacher-student Interviews

Our first set of parent-teacher-student interviews will take place next Tuesday the 26th April beginning at 3:30pm. At Good Shepherd we value and aim to nurture a three way partnership between parents/carers, teachers and the child. It is after all the child that is at Mr Senan Keating the heart of all that we do as educators. We look forward to meeting with you on Tuesday Deputy Principal to discuss your child’s progress, efforts and behaviour. Curriculum We do request that students attend parent-teacher-student interviews. So much of the discussion centres on them that we find it so important for them to listen, share and be IMPORTANT DATES present in those interviews. The goal of these meetings is to develop action plans to support and enable your child to achieve their best.

ANZAC DAY MONDAY 25TH APRIL Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in the Lumen Christi Centre. Bookings will close on Sunday, 24th April at 9:00pm PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS TUESDAY 26TH APRIL Assessment Calendars & Study LABOUR DAY MONDAY 2ND MAY This week assessment calendars were distributed in homeroom. Subject Changes - Year 11 & 12 students.

For those students who are wishing to make any changes to their subject choices, these must be complete early next week to ensure they are not missing any crucial learning and teaching. After this point. Students will be required to remain in their current choices, and will be able to make changes for the start of Term 3. These changes are particularly important for Year 11 students, as there are potential implications regarding the awarding of QCE points. Feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this.

From the Assistant Principal: Admin/Pastoral

We are off to a great start for Term Two - and what a busy term it will be! With a range of visiting speakers, special events and public holidays, the term will fly by. There are a few matters that I need to discuss in this newsletter as they reflect some changes that you may be unaware of.

Laptop Loans: The College is very pleased to have been able to lend students one of our College laptops when a student laptop has been broken, in order to allow time for their laptop to be repaired. However, as we have a pressing demand for “loan laptops”, the loan period will now be fixed to a period of five school days, which is sufficient time Mr John Harrop for the repairs to be made. This will provide the necessary window of opportunity to Acting Assistant Principal - Pastoral have the unit repaired under warranty, or, if the laptop has been damaged outside of the warranty provisions, replaced at the parent’s expense. As all students need the use IMPORTANT DATES of a laptop at Good Shepherd Catholic College, it is important that students have their laptop repaired or replaced before the end of the loan expiry period. If you have any queries, please feel free to get in with me.

ANZAC DAY Locker locks: We have had a number of students fit personal locks to their College MONDAY 25TH APRIL lockers, instead of using the approved College locks. In several instances we have had to remove these with bolt cutters, or in the event the lock is hardened steel, call in the PARENT/TEACHER locksmith to open the locker. It is essential that only College locks are used, as INTERVIEWS TUESDAY 26TH APRIL students frequently lose their keys and the College is legally required to have access to all student lockers. Please be assured, only the College leadership Team and Pastoral LABOUR DAY Leaders have access to student lockers. MONDAY 2ND MAY Hairstyles: We are currently seeing a new hairstyle for boys becoming popular in town. NAPLAN TESTING However, while diversity is great, students need to ensure that they do not trim their TUES 10TH MAY - THURS hair any shorter than a “number two” and that there are no tracks or undercuts. The 12TH MAY College allows a broad range of styles, but students still need to follow the College Uniform Policy. GSCC FEAST DAY FRIDAY 13TH MAY Good news! We have installed the new bike racks for students! The students were consulted about the best type of racks and the ones selected have been designed not to impact on disc brakes.

Until next time ….

Year 12 Pastoral Leader

After a very busy Term 1 and all the fun of retreat, students have returned ready and raring to go into Term 2. As the Term 1 reports have just gone out I would urge you to sign up to parent-teacher interviews to discuss what we can do, as a team, to get the very best grades achievable for our Year 12’s.

I have been meeting with the students to discuss their progress in obtaining QCE and current OP estimations. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress further please contact me here at the College or on my email [email protected]

This week students will be having a talk from Glencore about up and coming opportunities in the mines. The Year 11 & 12 girls will have a unique opportunity to sign Mrs Andie George up to a mentoring scheme that Glencore is running. This scheme presents an Year 12 Pastoral Leader opportunity for students to be monitored by women in different areas of the mines, from skilled workers, business managers, administration roles and many more.

Next week the Year 12’s on the OP pathway will be taking practice QCS tests on Thursday and Friday. These test can be quite heavy going so make sure you put in all the revision and skills learnt in QCS lessons to good use and get a good night’s sleep before hand and make sure you have a good breakfast.

Year 12 Retreat was an absolutely unforgettable experience. This year we were fortunate enough to stay at Mungalli Falls where we completed activities such as archery, landsliding, abseiling, raft building and various retreat activities. These activities were a test of our physical and mental strength (especially abseiling) and the retreat activities brought us closer together as a cohort. This retreat opened our eyes to different experiences and let us step out of our comfort zone and I believe that coming out of this experience, we are now even better people and leaders and we are ready to take on the rest of our final year! Shout out to Mr Keating, Mrs Allen, Ms Rigby, Mr Toohey and Mrs Woch for helping create such a memorable experience and to Mrs Bartley for organising it and being there in spirit. By Erin Faithful
