MicAael' J2umw Joseph Smith Ill's 1844 Blessing Ana The Mormons of Utah JVlembers of the Mormon Church headquartered in Salt Lake City may have reacted anywhere along the spectrum from sublime indifference to temporary discomfiture to cold terror at the recently discovered blessing by Joseph Smith, Jr., to young Joseph on 17 January 1844, to "be my successor to the Presidency of the High Priesthood: a Seer, and a Revelator, and a Prophet, unto the Church; which appointment belongeth to him by blessing, and also by right."1 The Mormon Church follows a line of succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., completely different from that provided in this document. To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period. -

It traces the deterioration of the relationship between the Mormons and their host from one of friendly sympathy to one of open warfare, and seeks to explain this decline with the aid of sociological concepts. It does not attempt to put forward a theory of conflict, nor to give a history of Mormonism in Illinois. -

McClellan and Maurine Carr Ward The Latter-day Saint movement grew quickly in Kirtland, brought about in no small part because of the fevered pace of its missionary efforts, first regionally and then abroad. This growth required the institution of many administrative functions and mechanisms most importantly to develop, dis- seminate, and control doctrine but also to create order and synergies in the frontier community, where government played only a fraction of the role apportioned to it today. It was during the Kirtland years that the fledgling Church first took aim at developing the range of policies and procedures necessary to govern a large group of people—both secular and spiritual. Although the more secu- lar interests gained prominence in Nauvoo and peaked in nineteenth-cen- tury Utah before phasing out during the twentieth century, the spiritual practices—or remnants thereof—developed in Kirtland proved foundational for the LDS faith and are still embedded in Church governance today. One administrative practice that became formalized during the Kirtland years concerned the regulation of Church doctrine through its emissaries— the establishment of a standard ordination and licensing system for autho- RICHARD D. ------------------------------3 Brannan Before the Brooklyn Will Bagley The most prominent - and problematic - of all the men and women who came to California in 1846 on the ship Brooklyn was Samuel Brannan, leader of the expedition. Brannan went on to become one of the richest men in the state, and after he left the LDS church in 1849, he became Mormonism's most famous apostate. His intimate connection with the LDS church proved to be a problem in his later life, and he found it convenient to put as much distance between himself and his past as possible. Brannan periodically rewrote his personal history to match his changing situation, leaving behind a tangled web of evidence that has thoroughly four when his youngest son was born, and was a confused historians. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Andrew F. Ehat In the last issue of BYU Studies, D. Michael Quinn presented for the first time a chronology of the Council of Fifty that annihilates the previ- ously held theory that this Council was one of the most important institu- tions in nineteenth-century Mormon history.1 Formally organized by Joseph Smith on 11 March 1844, just three months before he was mur- dered at Carthage, Illinois, the Council of Fifty was his concrete descrip- tion of the millennial government of God. In his article, Quinn gave an overview of the organization, officers, activity, and meaning of the Prophet’s Council of Fifty and presented insight into some of the internal political doctrine that guided Council meetings. However, he did not present or analyze the governing directive of the Council: The Constitution of the Kingdom of God. Nor did he discuss all the parliamentary procedures of the Kingdom that illustrate the theoretical rights, powers, and limitations of its officers and members. The purpose of this article then is to show that internal nature, role, and organization of Joseph Smith’s “Kingdom of God.” Admittedly, this study will appear more like a theological treatise, but considering Quinn’s research, there seems little else significant to say about the external chronology of the Council of Fifty. -
The Moses Thatcher Case
The Alienation of an Apostle from His Quorum: The Moses Thatcher Case Edward Leo Lyman n 1896 Moses Thatcher, a highly capable member of the second- I highest ruling body of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was relieved of his office of apostle. Since this action came soon after he had run for the U.S. Senate without proper consent from his ecclesiastical superiors in the First Presidency of the Church, many contemporaries and recent schol- ars have seen Thatcher's Democratic affiliation under a strongly Republican First Presidency as the source of conflict (Ivins cl950s; Reasoner, July 1896 and Dec. 1896; Penrose 1896). In fact, this political episode was actually only one final step in a process of alienation that had been developing for at least a decade. Moses Thatcher was born in 1842 and included among his childhood memories the Mormon expulsion from Illinois, the pioneer trek across the plains to Utah, and the California gold rush. At the age of fifteen, he became a missionary, an activity that would consume more than half of the next twenty years. In 1860, he helped his father locate canal and mill sites in Cache Valley, Utah, and soon emerged as a prominent director of railroad, banking, and other major enterprises. In 1877 he was sustained as Cache Stake presi- dent. Church authorities could not fail to note his considerable talents, par- ticularly after his negotiations with President Porfiro Diaz and other high officials of Mexico were instrumental in enabling permanent Mormon settle- ments in that country. -
