fails to do that it is a poor play when the dramatic experience is not enjoyable the audience ponders only one question how can I1 get out of here if a writer starts with a preconceived dogma or moral and organizes his plot in such a way as to teach or preach that moral his play may lose universal appeal and for many people be unenjoyable and valueless unless we define pleasure in terms of aristotles katharsis or longinus sublime or some other method of clarification we cannot say that every play which gives pleasure is a good play 1 I do not believe that a good drama must necessarily answer questions but I1 do believe that it must raise them not only must it raise questions but they must be difficult it is a shallow play that raises only questions 1 which are easily answered I1 believe the theatre should be a place for thinking for evaluating for pondering and ultimately for enlightening although samuel branbrannannan deals with such issues as drinking dishonesty and marital difficulties if I1 have written well these ileasycleasyeasy questions will be recognized as necessary parts of the story and plot and not as the important questions of the play if samuel brannan is a good play then I1 dont even know all of the questions it will raise they will differ with the experience iiiliilili i i ivi V knowledge and understandiunderstandsunderunderstandingstandistandlng of each individual who sees it if questions are immediately obvious I1 hope they are such questions as why do we live contrary to our convictions what determines our motivations how does one become wealthy Is it possible to want one thing and at the same time put our whole effort into obtaining something else which will keep from us what we really want if so why I1 do not know the answers to these questions for that reason alone it is impossible for me to preach my views on them plays are to be seen and it would be my hope that in watching this play performed I1 would feel its emotion and gain insight and enlightenment on these and other questions which may arise in performance 1 I have attempted to lay out causally and logically the experiences of samuel brannan which I1 felt were essential to the content of this play I1 chose to write about him because although he was in many ways like most men his life was one of extremes perhaps during his life he asked himself many difficult questions it appears to be a common thing for men in times of great loss or failure to probe the ghyswhyswhys I1 wonder if in retrospect he had insights which in his early life were not even considered As a writer I1 have taken some license with the historical facts in order to make this play theatrical for example samuels vast empire crumbled slowly I1 have condensed it his life after he lost his wealth I1 have also shortened he did not die on the wharf in san francisco but rather his death came slowly under the care of a kind woman in condidoescondidoesconbidoEs california v I1 have tried to remain true to sams character and am indebted to him for putting into his letters so many of his attitudes and philosophies I1 am also indebted to the LDS church for preserving so many of under the shroud of darkness only mary and her eight year old son alex jr are at home mary isi s darning socks and alex is sitting looking out of the window as if he were expectiexpectsexpectingng to see someone come MARY any sign of him yet ALEX its too dark to see anything MARY nervously hell be home shortly its way past your bed time alex ALEX not yet let me stay up a little longer gramps said hed bring me something from the store MARY youre a growing boy and you need your sleep A loud noise is heard on the front door step both mary and alex give a start what was that alex peers through the window ALEX its grandpa he fell down alex runs to help him followed by mary MARY Is that youyour father mary and alex return immediately with john who is drunk one of them is on each side of him helping to steady him ALEX are you hurthurtgrampsGramps 4 JOHN that step moved just as I1 put my foot on it it moved it did mary I1 saw it move they help him to the couch and he plops down in the middle of it MARY you promised not to drink sternly alex go to bed alex exits immediately cant you do without drink JOHN youre mad at memaryme mary ann MARY im not mad im just upset JOHN if you could only just wheres alexander MARY he hasnt come in from the field JOHN how come hes so 1lateate MARY 01ignoringgeoringgnoringgnor ing his question father I1 hate for alex to see you drunk I1 want him to respect you k JOHN hes a fine boy he is hes the only person I1 know that likes me even when im drunk MARY we all like you but when youve been drinking you arent yourself john gets to his feet and get sometimes when youre drunk JOHN I1 know everything I1 do he just had no respect for me it doesnt matter anymore MARY youre right it doesnt hes a man now and a good one JOHN getting drowsy wheres alexander MARY somethings wrong or hed be here hes never been this late before john falls off to sleep mary goestagoestogoes to the window and nervously peers into the night in her concern for alexander she fails to notice that john is asleep I1 wish you could go find him VOICE off stage mary mary are you there mary gives a start and peers into the darkness As soon as she recognizes her husband she hurries and opens the door alexander enters helped by sam on one side and another man on the other he has been badly beaten MARY alexander what happened toyoupoyou to sam here lay him mary motions toward the couch but seeing john sprawled out in the middle of it she clears her sewing from the big chair sit him here 6 SAM to mary 1111171 move the old man ilill mary helps support MicAael' J2umw Joseph Smith Ill's 1844 Blessing Ana The Mormons of Utah JVlembers of the Mormon Church headquartered in Salt Lake City may have reacted anywhere along the spectrum from sublime indifference to temporary discomfiture to cold terror at the recently discovered blessing by Joseph Smith, Jr., to young Joseph on 17 January 1844, to "be my successor to the Presidency of the High Priesthood: a Seer, and a Revelator, and a Prophet, unto the Church; which appointment belongeth to him by blessing, and also by right."1 The Mormon Church follows a line of succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., completely different from that provided in this document. To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period.

    The Expansion of Mormonism in the South Pacific R. LANIER BRITSCH SINCE THE FIRST encounter between Latter-day Saint missionaries and the peoples of Polynesia 136 years ago, there have been inevitable changes in both the methods of missionary work and the adaptation of the island mem- bers to the Church. Problems of cross-cultural encounter are not peculiar to any particular religious group or to any geographical region. They are a natu- ral result of the clash between various traditions. It is natural for people to love their own country and customs. Patterns and traditions bring order and sense to life. Alien beliefs and products threaten old ways and often demand accommodation. At times the new ways are more attractive than the old. This has been true in the Pacific. The various island groups have presented different linguistic and societal challenges to the Church. It is possible, however, because of basic similarities, to consider the entire area as a whole. Among the matters that can be consid- ered here, I have chosen to focus on two parts of the interaction with the Pacific peoples: the theory and method of missionary work; and the Church as an agent of culture change and adaptation. MISSIONARY WORK Students of mission history have devoted considerable time and innumer- able printed words to the analysis of mission theology and mission theory. R.     Stephen C. Sturgeon: Utah State University Special Collections 137 Mormon Manuscript Materials in Utah State University’s Special Collections and Archives1 Stephen C. Sturgeon The Division of Special Collections and Archives located in the Merrill Library at Utah State University, Logan, Utah, is composed of six different sections (Manuscripts, Photographs, University Archives, Rare Books, Preservation, and Art and Book Arts). Although each of these sections focuses on collecting different types of materials, one major focus for Special Collections as a whole is Mormon history. Although the division itself has existed only since 1965, Utah State University’s collection of Mormon materials dates back to 1916 when the university spent its entire book bud- get to purchase the Eli H. Peirce library. This collection contained almost seven hundred books focusing on Mormon and Utah history.2 Since then, USU’s collection of Mormon materials has steadily grown, and now it is one of the top ten in the country and one of the largest held by a public institu- tion. What follows is a brief list of some of the major Mormon manuscript collections at USU. Processed Collections Alunite, Utah, Branch LDS Records (Mss 207)—Minutes of sacra- ment meetings and membership rosters covering the period 1917–20. Alunite was a mining town during World War I but subsequently was aban- doned after the war. Edgar B. McClellan and Maurine Carr Ward The Latter-day Saint movement grew quickly in Kirtland, brought about in no small part because of the fevered pace of its missionary efforts, first regionally and then abroad. This growth required the institution of many administrative functions and mechanisms most importantly to develop, dis- seminate, and control doctrine but also to create order and synergies in the frontier community, where government played only a fraction of the role apportioned to it today. It was during the Kirtland years that the fledgling Church first took aim at developing the range of policies and procedures necessary to govern a large group of people—both secular and spiritual. Although the more secu- lar interests gained prominence in Nauvoo and peaked in nineteenth-cen- tury Utah before phasing out during the twentieth century, the spiritual practices—or remnants thereof—developed in Kirtland proved foundational for the LDS faith and are still embedded in Church governance today. One administrative practice that became formalized during the Kirtland years concerned the regulation of Church doctrine through its emissaries— the establishment of a standard ordination and licensing system for autho- RICHARD D.
