• Systematics of the Middle Jurassic Heteromorphic Ammonites
UDC 564. 53 . 01 SYSTEMATICS OF THE MIDDLE JURASSIC HETEROMORPHIC AMMONITES N. V. Besnosov and V. V. Kutuzova All-Union Scientific Research Petroleum Geologic Exploration Institute (VSEGEI) ABSTRACT: The stratigraphic distribution, phylogenetic relationships, and systema tics of the Middle Jurassic heteromorphic ammonites and their relationship to the monomorphic ammonites are considered. Sulcohamitoides gen. nov. and Gaantiana as ajani sp. nov. are described. * * * The vast majority of Middle Jurassic heteromorphic ammonites are shells with a spiral developing early in one plane, all the way to the formation of a straight tube in the outer part of the phragmocone and in the living chamber. They are also characterized by reduction of the U and I lobes in ontogenesis, manifested to a greater or lesser degree, and by only slight dissection of their lobes and saddles. The following generic names of the Jurassic heteromorphs are given in the lite rature. Acuceas Potonie, 1929, for which the family Arcuceratidae Arkell, 1950 has been proposed. This genus is based on a single species, A. mathae Potonie, from the Pliensbachian of Germany, the only specimen of which has been lost. Repeated searches at the type locality have been unsuccessful. It has been suggested that the dating is erroneous, or that the species and genus are based not on a heteromor phic ammonite, but on acrinoid stem. Apsooceas Hyatt, 1900, occurs in the lower half of the subfucatum zone of the Upper-Bajocian and has usually been combined with Spioceas Quenstedt, 1858, from which it differs in its less reduced U and I lobes and its finer sculpture.

Eine paläontologische Revision der Ammonitengattung Strenoceras HYATTmit den Untergattungen Strenoceras HYATT(m) und Garantiana HYATT(M) wird durchgeführt. [The faunal horizons of the "Subfurcaten-Schichten" (Bajocian, Niortense-Zone) in Northwest Germany) Abstract: Because of new exposures in the "Subfurcaten-Schichten" (Bajocian, Niortense- Zone) in Northwest Germany it is possible to subdivide the sequence in ammonite faunal hori- zons. A palaeontological revision of the genus Strenoceras HYATTwith the subgenus Strenoceras HYATT(m) and Garantiana HYATT(M) is executed.

The assemblage contains species of the genera Garantiana, Pseudogarantiana, Paragarantiana, Djanaliparkinsonia (all family Stephanoceratidae) and Vermisphinctes (family Perisphinctidae). A section of the Garantiana Zone on the Kyafar River contains (from bottom to top) Beds with Djanaliparkinsonia alanica (also recognized on the Kuban River), Beds with Garantiana subgaranti and Beds with Paragarantiana, approximately corresponding to the Dichotoma, Garantiana, and Tetragona subzones of the standard scale. Garantiana subgaranti Wetzel and Vermisphinctes martiusii (d’Orbigny) are described. Prorsisphinctes Buck- man, 1921 is proposed as a junior subjective synonym of Vermisphinctes Buckman, 1920. The global signals of disparity and diversity are compared. These signals are then broken down by paleogeographical provinces to detect any heterogeneity in the radiation. An examination of the global signals reveals three biodiversity crises (discordances between signals) where morphological disparity grows while taxonomic diversity declines. The subdivision of the signals indicates the radiation was heterogeneous between provinces: the global signal is an aggregate of signals from each province. The three biological crises have different paleogeographical signatures: the first is visible in a few provinces only while the other two are visible in most provinces. First-order crises can be distinguished from second-order ones by studying the number of paleogeographical provinces affected. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. ABSTRACT—A new upper Bajocian ammonite assemblage containing the morphoceratids Dimorphinites dimorphus (d’Orbigny) and Vigoriceras defrancei (d’Orbigny) is reported from the circum-Pacific area. These ammonites were found at the top of the Torcazas Formation, in the Quebrada San Pedro area, Precordillera of northern Chile. Taphonomic, systematic, and paleobiogeographic data confirm these dimorphs were part of indigenous populations within the Tarapaca Basin, belonging to the same demic biospecies: Dimorphinites defrancei (d’Orbigny).

We have re- were found. A major gap of both the Niortense Zone and the Garantiana alized both a detailed log and a bed-by-bed sampling for ammonite biostra- Zone, which was not previously described, was detected at the boundary be- tigraphy in a 68 metres thick succession of subpelagic marls and limestones tween members 2 and 3. The main palaeontological interest of the ammonite (“Calcaires à Zoophycos”) that spans the Middle Jurassic from uppermost fauna from La Baume is the richness and diversity of the family Sonniniidae, Aalenian to lowermost Bathonian. The subpelagic succession can be roughly which is the subject of a systematic study and figurated along with some bio- subdivided into three members. Ammonites from the Upper Aalenian Con- stratigraphically significant forms. Biostratigraphical results and open prob- cavum Zone, all Lower Bajocian Zones (Discites Zone, Laeviuscula Zone lems are discussed. including Ovale Subzone, Humpriesianum Zone), one Upper Bajocian Zone Introduction biostratigraphical subdivisions of the geological formations ex- posed. The Jurassic successions in the area of the Réserve Géologique des Alpes de Haute Provence are widely known because of Geological setting the excellent quality of the exposures, the abundance of am- monoids and the easy access.

STRATIGRAPHY MIDDLE JURASSIC PROFILES IN THE VICINITY OF GYENESPUSZTA To explore the Middle Jurassic sediments available (Text-fig. 2), the staff of the Hungarian Geological Institute carried out diggings on six sites in the vicinity of Gyenespuszta farmstead, northern Bakony Mountains, Hungary (Text-fig. 1). Each profile thus exposed comprises a different rock sequence of different facies and with a different fauna. (For the faunal lists and the profiles, see the Hungarian text.) Profile I The Dachstein Limestone is overlain with a hiatus spanning the entire Middle and Upper Liassic and the Lower Dogger, by red nodular limestone beds (Text-fig. 3), with a fauna characteristic of the Upper Bajocian Parkinsonia parkinsoni Zone. Profile II At the base of the profile (Text-fig. 4) the footwall is represented by lowermost Liassic limestones of Dachstein type that are followed by a thin manganiferous layer with ammonites characteristic of the Toarcian Hildaites serpentinum Zone. This is overlain by the Middle Jurassic ammonitico rosso limestone in which the Middle Bathonian Tulites subcontractus Zone and the Upper Bathonian Prohecticoceras retrocostatus Zone could be identified. The hanging-wall is represented by radio- larites. Profiles III and IV The two profiles have exposed a Middle Jurassic rock suit of similar litho- and biofacies, differing from the other Gyenespuszta profiles. The abundance of Bositra is conspicuous. Both lithology and fauna suggest the presence in Profile III of sediments deposited in a submarine fissure (Q fissure, see W e n d t 1971). Both profiles contain a fauna belonging to the Parkinsoni Zone. Profile V The rock types in this profile (Text-fig.

FERNANDEZ-LOPEZ S., CHONG G., QUINZIO L.A. & WILKE H.G. 1994. The Upper Bajocian and Bathonian in the Cordillera de Domeyko, North-Chilean Precordillera : sedimentological and biostratigraphical results. [Le Ba jocien superieur et le Bathonien de la CordiIIere de Domeyko, PrecordilIere Nord-Chilienne : resultats sedimento logiques et biostratigraphiquesl. ABSTRACT The Jurassic ammonites of the CordiIIera de Domeyko have been studied in several monographies. The classic memoirs of Steinmann (1881), Tornquist (1898), Burckhardt (1903) and Stehn (1923) are particularly relevant. However, the biostratigraphic problems concerning stage boundaries arisen only in recent dates. New sedimentolo gical and biostratigraphical data have been obtained in relation to the BajocianlBathonian of this region. Several sections have been studied in two separate areas : Caracoles and Sierra de Varas. More than one thousand ammonites were collected in situ from these localities. Facies analysis shows that sedimentation during Late Bajocian and Bathonian occurs in a marine environment on a carbonate platform with abundant siliciclastic supply. Facies distribution was controlled by structural segmentation of the platform and processes of differential subsidence. The stratigraphical-sedimentological results together with taphonomical-palaeoecological observations are a diagnostic tool for sequence analysis. The successive ammonite assemblages which were found have allowed the establishment of four biostratigraphic units, spanning the interval from Upper Bajocian to Upper Bathonian. The sedimentological and biostratigraphical results indicate the existence of a regional discontinuity at the base of the Bathonian.
