NOTES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LINGUISTIC SOCIETY OF AMERICA 1924 TO 1950 MARTIN JOOS for JENNIE MAE JOOS FORE\\ORO It is important for the reader of this document to know how it came to be written and what function it is intended to serve. In the early 1970s, when the Executive Committee and the Committee on Pub1ications of the linguistic Society of America v.ere planning for the observance of its Golden Anniversary, they decided to sponsor the preparation of a history of the Society's first fifty years, to be published as part of the celebration. The task was entrusted to the three living Secretaries, J M. Cowan{who had served from 1940 to 1950), Archibald A. Hill {1951-1969), and Thomas A. Sebeok {1970-1973). Each was asked to survey the period of his tenure; in addition, Cowan,who had learned the craft of the office from the Society's first Secretary, Roland G. Kent {deceased 1952),was to cover Kent's period of service. At the time, CO'flal'\was just embarking on a new career. He therefore asked his close friend Martin Joos to take on his share of the task, and to that end gave Joos all his files. Joos then did the bulk of the research and writing, but the~ conferred repeatedly, Cowansupplying information to which Joos v.t>uldnot otherwise have had access. Joos and HiU completed their assignments in time for the planned publication, but Sebeok, burdened with other responsibilities, was unable to do so. Since the Society did not wish to bring out an incomplete history, the project was suspended. -

THAT LIBERTY SHALL NOT PERISH: AMERICAN PROPAGANDA AND THE POLITICS OF FEAR, 1914-1919 by ZACHARY CHARLES SMITH (Under the Direction of John H. Morrow, Jr.) ABSTRACT This dissertation attempts to provide an understanding of the widespread anxiety, vigilantism, suppression of dissent, and violation of civil liberties that took place in the United States from 1917 to 1919 and argues that it can be found in some Americans‟ understanding of and reaction to racially-charged propaganda. As the United States inched toward war with Germany in 1915 and after declaring war in April 1917, many propagandists began referencing the allegedly inherent characteristics of Germans as evidence of German American disloyalty and the existence of a vast “Pan-German” plot to undercut or even destroy American democracy. The imagined conspiracy grew to encompass most of the fears that had plagued the Anglo Saxon middle-class since the 1870s – immigrant radicalism, race suicide, the capability of “racially inferior” immigrants to assimilate and self-govern, and the continued deference of African Americans. To many anxious Americans, Germany and German Americans became a very real entity to which these long-held fears could be transferred. American propaganda produced during the First World War, though, was not a cynical ploy to fool the American people into supporting intervention on the side of the Allies. Leading Americans – politicians, editors, and social elites – were convinced that a global German conspiracy threatened the security of the United States and hoped to enlist the American people in staving off the existential threat they believed racially degenerate Germany allegedly posed. -

The objects examined include one such handscroll painting, several illustrated books from the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library, and Hokusai Ryūkyū Hakkei, an 1832 series of eight landscape prints depicting sites in Okinawa. Drawing upon previous scholarship on the role of popular publishing in forming conceptions of “Japan” or of “national identity” at this time, a media discourse approach is employed to argue that such publications can serve as reliable indicators of understandings -

HIVER 2017 ÉDITORIAL DE RETOUR DES TRANS Dimanche 4 décembre à 10h57, je me pose dans le train qui me ramène de Rennes avec ma valise à roulettes bruyantes dans une main et un grand café fumant dans l’autre, les yeux encore mi-clos mais des sons et des images pleins la tête. La 38ème édition des Transmusicales de Rennes fut ma 5ème d’affilée. Je regarde les paysages défiler à la vitesse du Train à Grande Vitesse en songeant aux quelques soixante groupes que j’ai dû voir en quatre jours, remontant sur mon petit carnet le nom des groupes appréciés ou qui m’ont déçus lors du festival, potentiellement programmables ou pas à la Cave aux Poètes. Je me pose alors une question essentielle, voire existentialiste : est-ce que je vais vraiment aux Transmusicales pour programmer les groupes dans la foulée sous le prétexte qu’ils ont tous des agents en France déjà au travail sur leur imminente tournée française ? Et là je me dis, en retraçant les cinq éditions écoulées à vitesse grand V, que finalement je vais un peu aux Transmusicales de Rennes comme les gens de la mode vont au Salon « Première vision » : on y découvre les tendances de demain, et pas seulement des groupes en particulier. Alors j’examine la programmation, lis quelques premiers articles, et tente de me remémorer certaines conversations avec d’éminents confrères programmateurs… Et pour parler de tendances, il y alors trois idées majeures qui me viennent à l’esprit pour les années à venir. La première est qu’une large place est donnée cette année aux musiques du monde, comme une sorte de barrage aux élans nationalistes actuels ou comme une capacité d’ouverture de la jeunesse qui prend aujourd’hui l’avion comme on prend le métro. -

MEETING I was unable to attend this and have only reports from other members. I understand that Sidney Divers showed examples of Kesho and Sashi-kome polishes on sword blades, and also the result of a "home polish" on a blade, using correcb polishing stones obtained from Japan, I believe in sixteen different grades0 Peter Cottis gave his talk on Bows and Arrows0 I hope it may be possible to obtain notes from Peter on his talk0 Sid Diverse written remarks can his part in the meeting are as follows "As promised at our last meeting, I have brought examples of good (Sashi-Komi) and cheap (Kesho) • polishes. There are incidentally whole ranges of prices for both types of polish0 The Sashi-Komi polish makes the colour of the Yakiba almost the same as the Jihada. This does bring out all the smallest details of Nie and Nioi which would not show by the Kesho polish. -

Singlen som ble sluppet 8. mai, L.Y.S. (Love Yourself), handler om å elske og akseptere seg selv og er i tråd med Oslo Pride og LLH Oslo og Akershus budskap rundt festivalen. Se L.Y.S. Melodi Grand Prix i 2012 Tooji ble kjent her hjemme da han vant Melodi Grand Prix i 2012 og representerte Norge i Aserbajdsjan med låten "Stay". Høsten 2013 tok han et oppgjør med norsk musikkbransje, kuttet alle bånd og flyttet til Stockholm for å lage musikk han selv vil høre på. Nå kommer Tooji til Oslo Pride og Pride Park med den rykende ferske pride- låta "Father". I Pride Park vil Tooji i tillegg fremføre låta "L.Y.S".
