Etyrnologically the word "geology" should apply equally to the study of both these regions, but, for convenience and from the limitation of the individual human mind, it is usually confined to the problems presented by the rocks composing the crust, wMle those of the deeper regions lie outside its scope. Such, briefly, are the conclusions which may be drawn from the sciences of terrestrial observation. The statement, I know, is in- complete and imperfect; some at least of the conclusions will doubtless be traversed and regarded as incompatible with the results obtained from other lines of research, but in their main features of the threefold division of physical condition and the twofold division ot'chemical composition they seem to me so well founded that the burden of proof lies with those who would traverse, rather than with those who are prepared to accept, them. TI1HE following notes were compiled, for the most part, some years J_ ago, but their publication in the present form suggested itself to the writer on the perusal (during a short "leave" from active service) of a number of recent papers ou Ammonites, principally Professor Swinnerton and A. E. Trueman's study of the " Morphology and Development of the Ammonite Septum".1 The main part of that inquiry is devoted to the development of the septum, illustrated by successive " septa 1 sections", and it is claimed that where sutural development cannot be worked out, "septal sections" will to some extent serve as a substitute. -

Glenister, 83, a leading researcher on Paleozoic ammonoids, passed away on 7 June 2012 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was an influential member of the International Stratigraphic Commission and several of its subcommissions, led many seminars on Holocene lithofacies and molluscan biofacies in Florida Bay, and was an inspiring teacher for almost forty years at The University of Iowa in Iowa City. Brian was born in Albany, Western Australia on 28 September 1928 into a large family whose father died four years later. He was then raised by his eldest sister but also encouraged greatly in his studies by his mother. He attended the University of Western Australia in Perth, where he received a B.Sc., majoring in physics in 1948. Abstract: The organodetritic and organogenic limestones under study have been assigned to Goa Zone and Goßmu Subzone. In the systematic part the follow ing species have been described: Goniatites crenistria Phill., G. ex gr. crenistria Phill., G. sphaericostriatus Bisat, G. robustus Moore et Hod., G. cf. m ucro- natus (K n о p p), Goniatites sp., Muensteroceras truncatum (Phil 1.), M. sp. cf. jo u r- nieri (Del épine), Nomismoceras vittiger (P hill.), Glyphiolobus pseudodiscrepans (Moor e). Correlation of discussed profiles is based on both paleontological and geological investigations. INTRODUCTION Notwithstanding a considerable advance in the studies on the Gałęziee syncline (e.g. Ż а к o w a 1970 a, b, 1971 a; Jachowicz, Żakowa, 1969; Jurkiewicz, Żak o w a, 1972), not all the problems concerning the stratigraphy of the Carboniferous rocks have been- satisfactorily elucidated. The present paper deals with the stratigraphy of the Upper Visean calcareous rocks (visible in outcrops) and their lateral equivalents* i.e. calcareous-clayey rocks (known from boreholes). According to Czarnocki (1965) and Kwiatkowski (1959), the calcareous rocks represent the whole Visean, whereas Czarniec ki, Kostecka and Kwiatkowski (1965) are of the opinion that they belong to D3_2zones only. -

In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly ac- quired facts in the field of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related sub- jects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. -

The want of a complete and consistent list of the principal subdivisions of the mollusks having been experienced for some time, and such a list being at length imperatively needed for the arrangement of the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the present arrangement has been compiled for that purpose. It must be considered simply as a provisional list, embracing the results of the most recent and approved researches into the systematic relations and anatomy of those animals, but from which innova- tions and peculiar views, affecting materially the classification, have been excluded. -

39g TRIASSIC AMMONOID RECOVERIES AND EXTINCfIONS. E.T.Tozer, Geological Survey of Canada, 100 West Pender Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, V6B IR8, Canada. Triassic ammonoids provide an excellent glimpse of faunal recovery after the extinctions at the P-T boundary. No other animals, with the possible exception of those represented by conodonts, provide so nearly a continuous faunal record with more than 40 different successive faunas easily distinguished. The problems introduced by Lazarus taxa are reduced although there are still gaps that make positive elucidation of some phylogenies difficult or impossible. The Triassic chronology used here is that of most DNAG volumes, except that Scythian, the only Triassic stage in the Lower Triassic in the Introductory volume is divided into four, as in volumes for Western and Arctic Canada. Succession of Triassic series and st(\ges is thus: Lower Triassic - Griesbachian, Dienerian, Smithian, Spathian; Middle Triassic - Anisian, Ladinian; Upper Triassic Carnian, Norian. Rhaetian of some authors is part or parts of this Upper Norian. How much of the Upper Norian has not been settled. In a 1980 census Triassic Ammonoidea were assigned to 3 Orders, Prolecanitida (3 genera); Ceratitida (427); Phylloceratida (15). In the Ceratitida virtually every kind of morphological character is represented. Shells range in shape from serpenticone to globose and oxycone, or heteromorph; in sculpture from smooth to ribbed and/or tuberculate. All kinds of sutures are developed. The large number of taxa are necessary to express the variation. The Permian-Triassic boundary was not a disaster for the ammonoids. Three groups cross the boundary, one of Prolecanitida (Episageceratidae), two of Ceratitida (Otocerataceae and Xenodiscaceae). -

Wassonville Member of the Hampton Formation in southeastern SYNOPSIS: Lower Mississippian rocks in the type area of North Iowa and the Chouteau Limestone of Missouri fall within the America have produced only a few scattered ammonoid cephalo lower "Pericyclus-Stufe" of the upper Tournaisian Stage as these pods. Those specimens from southeastern Iowa and northwestern units are designated for the early Lower Carboniferous of Western Missouri lie within the general vicinity of the designated type Europe. -
