Thursday’s first round is slated to begin at 7 pm CT/5 pm PT, while Friday’s second day featuring the second and third rounds starts at 6 pm CT/4 pm PT. Rounds four through seven get underway Saturday at 11 am CT/9 am PT. ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, NFL Network and ESPN Deportes will televise the 2019 NFL Draft live and provide extensive coverage of the event. Cal has 13 former players who completed their collegiate eligibility with the Golden Bears in 2018 with professional football aspirations who participated in the school’s Pro Day last month. Cal had at least one player selected in the NFL Draft for 28 consecutive years (1987-2014), one in the top three rounds for eight (2007-14) and two in the first four rounds for five (2010-14) before those streaks were all snapped when no Cal player was taken in the 2015 NFL Draft. • Cal’s six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL Draft is tied for the third-most by any college football program behind only Notre Dame (9) and USC (7) while equaling Stanford (6) and UCLA (6). Cal’s list of first-round quarterbacks includes Craig Morton (1965 – No. 5, Dallas Cowboys), Bartkowski, Rich Campbell (1981 – No. 6, Green Bay Packers), Kyle Boller (2003 – No. 19, Baltimore Ravens), Aaron Rodgers (2005 – No. 24, Green Bay Packers) and Goff. • Prior to Goff’s 2016 selection the most recent first-round NFL Draft pick from Cal was defensive end Cameron Jordan when he was taken in the first round with No. 24 overall selection by the New Orleans Saints. • Goff, Jordan and Rodgers are among five first-round NFL Draft picks from Cal are currently on NFL rosters of the teams they were drafted by. The two others – Alex Mack (2009 – No. 21, Cleveland Browns) and Tyson Alualu (2010 – No. 10, Jacksonville Jaguars) – are currently on NFL teams that they were not drafted by with Mack now a member of the Atlanta Falcons and Alualu on the roster of the Pittsburgh Steelers. • Cal had two players selected in the most recent NFL Draft in 2018 in linebacker Devante Downs (Minnesota Vikings, seventh round, No. 225 overall) and defensive end James Looney (Green Bay Packers, seventh round, No. 232 overall). • The most Cal players selected in a single NFL Draft were the 10 chosen in 1952, while Cal's six players picked in the 1977, 2008 and 2012 drafts are tied for the second-most in school history.     2019 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT MARCH 31, 2019 NFL Draft 2019 Scouting Report: WR D.J. Montgomery, Austin Peay *WR grades can and will change as more information comes in from Pro Day workouts, Wonderlic test results leaked, etc. We will update ratings as new info becomes available. *WR-B stands for "Big-WR," a classification we use to separate the more physical, downfield/over-the- top, heavy-red-zone-threat-type WRs. Our WR-S/"Small-WRs" are profiled by our computer more as slot and/or possession-type WRs who are typically less physical and rely more on speed/agility to operate underneath the defense and/or use big speed to get open deep...they are not used as weapons in the red zone as much. As soon as I saw the Pro Day numbers come in, I had to jump in and do a study to see if there was something hot here – D.J. Montgomery reporting in at 6’1+”/201 with a 4.43 40-time, 1.52 10-yard split, a 6.69 three-cone, and 37.5” vertical. Just going by measurables, those are 1st/2nd-round draft pick numbers. After my deeper research, sadly, I had to call off the dogs a bit. Montgomery is still a prospect that should be a very early call after the draft, and I’ll explain why in a moment, but I was hoping to get blown away when I started watching the tape and looking at the numbers – and I wasn’t. Let’s talk about the bad, and then get into the good/promising… Montgomery was a JUCO star who only leveraged that into going to play for FCS Austin Peay.

    PFF WAR: Modeling Player Value in American Football Submission ID: 1548728 Track: Other Sports Player valuation is one of the most important problems in all of team sports. In this paper we use Pro Football Focus (PFF) player grades and participation data to develop a wins above replacement (WAR) model for the National Football League. We find that PFF WAR at the player level is more stable than traditional, or even advanced, measures of performance, and yields dramatic insiGhts into the value of different positions. The number of wins a team accrues throuGh its players’ WAR is more stable than other means of measurinG team success, such as PythaGorean win totals. We finish the paper with a discussion of the value of each position in the NFL draft and add nuance to the research suggesting that tradinG up in the draft is a negative-expected-value move. 1. Introduction Player valuation is one of the most important problems in all of team sports. While this problem has been addressed at various levels of satisfaction in baseball [1], [23], basketball [2] and hockey [24], [6], [13], it has larGely been unsolved in football, due to unavailable data for positions like offensive line and substantial variations in the relative values of different positions. Yurko et al. [25] used publicly available play-by-play data to estimate wins above replacement (WAR) values for quarterbacks, receivers and running backs. Estimates for punters [4] have also been computed, and the most-recent work of ESPN Sports Analytics [9] has modified the +/- approach in basketball to college football beginning in the fall of 2019.
