Basic Answers What have I gotten myself into? Some basic questions and simple answers about Vegas Movie Studio 15 and how it works What is non-linear editing (NLE)? Non-linear editing is basically another term for editing video on a computer. “Non-linear” is in contrast to linear editing – the way video and �lm used to be edited in the days of tape and �lm reels. In those days, if you wanted to take a scene from the beginning of a reel of �lm or tape and you wanted to cut it with another at the end, you’d need to go through the entire reel to grab each scene. That’s linear editing. In order to get from this piece to that piece, you have to go through everything in between. In non-linear video, your scenes or clips appear in a catalog (the Project Media window) and you just grab and mix them in any order you want. A much easier way to work, don’t you think? What’s the difference between Vegas Movie Studio, Vegas Movie Studio Platinum and Vegas Pro? Well, in terms of the quality of the results, absolutely nothing. They all produce the same excellent quality of video outputs. The Pro version, however, includes a number of higher-end features (such as support for RED ONE camcorders) and the ability to embed one project into another. Vegas Movie Studio Platinum’s bundle includes DVD Architect (a DVD/BluRay authoring program), a slideshow creator tool and advanced color correction tools that are not included with plain vanilla Vegas Movie Studio. -

Through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions, our revenues for the year rose by more than 30% to $775.4 million, resulting in GAAP net income of $34 million, or $0.86 per diluted share. But a revolution has been hap- pening for a few years now, a revolution that is putting the moviemaking art within reach of almost anyone. The revolution has occurred in three phases: 1. The creation of mega-powerful computers with huge hard drives that are unbelievably affordable has changed the rules of video editing. Such computers incorporate technologies like IEEE-1394 FireWire, which make working with video easy. 2. The advent of affordable digital camcorders has made collecting high- quality video a snap. These camcorders interface easily with computers. 3. The clincher is software. High-end video editing programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro brought pro-caliber video editing to desktop computers, and simpler programs like Apple iMovie and PinnacleCOPYRIGHTED Studio made editing software MATERIAL affordable. I hesitate to call Adobe Premiere Elements the next step in the video editing revolution, but it’s definitely a step forward. Premiere Elements delivers about 90 percent of the video-editing power of high-end programs like Final Cut Pro for an astoundingly low retail price of just $100. I cannot think of another pro- gram that costs less than $300 and offers anywhere near the level of features of Premiere Elements. -
