SPECIFICALLY, I EXPLORE HOW THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER – AS DISSEMINATED BY THE PODCAST – CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE; SETTING THE BODY IN MOTION AND LEADING TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING, FEELING AND BEING. WHILE THESE PUBLIC EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION CAN BE TRANSGRESSIVE, I POSTULATE THAT THEY CAN ALSO RELIEVE SOME OF THE TENSION CREATED BY THE NEGATIVE AFFECTS SWIRLING AROUND FEMINISM, WHICH, ACCORDING TO AHMED, “IS ALWAYS ASSUMED TO BE BRINGING OTHERS DOWN” (AHMED, 2010:65). USING GUATTARI’S IDEAS ON THE PRODUCTION OF SUBJECTIVATION, I ARGUE THAT THESE EXPLOSIONS CAN INTENSIFY THE EMERGENCE OF A GLOBAL, INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST COMMUNITY, PROVOKING A CONSIDERATION OF HOW PODCASTS SUCH AS THE GUILTY FEMINIST COULD EXTEND OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ONLINE ACTIVISM WITHIN CONTEMPORARY FEMINISMS.

European Journal of Humour Research 5 (3) 108–111 www.europeanjournalofhumour.org Book review Quirk, S. (2015). Why Stand-Up Comedy Matters. How Comedians Manipulate and Influence. London and New York: Bloomsbury. 248 pages. As the title and introduction explain, Sophie Quirk’s monograph sets out to investigate the reasons and ways comedians manipulate and influence their audience. The term manipulation, however, should be considered apart from its often negative connotations and should be interpreted as the comedian’s attempt to skilfully communicate with their audience, elicit laughter, and, most importantly in this case, influence their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour (see p. 2). With these premises, Quirk explores instances of stand-up comedy including some interaction between mainly well-known British comedians (e.g. Eddie Izzard, Stewart Lee, Josie Long) and their audience. She also interviews some of these performers so as to gain a first-hand understanding of the comedians’ performing experience. The book is divided into three main sections, which are well balanced in terms of structural organisation of the topic at hand. Part I comprises of two chapters in which Quirk explains how comedians manipulate and control their audience by, for instance, eliciting laughter at the right time. Drawing on Schopenhauer (1987), Freud (1957), and Douglas (1999), Quirk provides a sound overview of joking in relation to laughter, superiority, relief, incongruity, and challenge. She concludes that: Joking is always part of an ongoing negotiation through which current thought and practices are challenged and tested. Some challenges are gentle and leave their targets in tact [sic]; others are dangerous.

American Comedy in Three CenturieS The Contras4 Fashion, Calzforniα Suile James R. Bowers Abstract This paper is a survey of the development of American comedy since the United States became an independent nation. A representative play was selected from the 18th century(Royall Tyler’s The Contrast), the 19th century(Anna Cora Mowatt’s Fashion)and the 20th century(Neil Simon’s Califoグnia Suite). Asummary of each play is丘rst presented and then fo110wed by an analysis to determine in what ways it meets or deviates from W. D, Howarth’s minimal de且nition of comedy. Each work was found to conform to the definition and to possess features su岱ciently distinct for it to be classified as a masterpiece of its time. Next, the works were analyzed to derive from them unique features of American comedy. The plays were found to possess distinctive elements of theme, form and technique which serve to distinguish them as Ameri. can comedies rather than Europeal1, Two of these elelnents, a thematic concern with identity as Americans and the technical primacy of dialog and repartee for the stimulation of laughter were found to persist into present day comedy. Other elements:characterization, subtlety of form -145一 and social relevance of theme were 6bserved to have evolved over the centuries into more complex modes. Finally, it was noted that although the dominant form of comedy iロthe 18th and 19th centuries was an American variant of the comedy of man- ners, the 20th century representative Neil Simon seems to be evolving a new form I have coined the comedy

  • Legitimacy and the Celebrity Single-Issue Candidate
Legitimacy and the celebrity single-issue candidate While news coverage of General Elections can be argued to ‘crowd out’ other topics of public interest in the public sphere, some saw the election as an opportunity to attract publicity to a cause. The artist Bob and Roberta Smith stood in Michael Gove’s Surrey Heath constituency in protest at the coalition’s changes to the education curriculum downgrading the importance of art, while the comedian Al Murray’s ‘Pub Landlord’ candidacy in South Thanet was presented, perhaps more ambiguously, as a satirical criticism of fellow candidate Nigel Farage (the initials of Murray’s ‘Free United Kingdom Party’ (FUKP) illustrating the blunt nature of any ironical intent). Murray’s manifesto pledged to brick up the channel tunnel using British bricks and Polish workers; Smith’s platform was built around placing art at the centre of the curriculum. Towards the end of the campaign, and notwithstanding the final outcome, legitimacy - in the sense of the various potential parliamentary combinations of the main parties - became a key media topic. To what extent was the legitimacy of candidates such as Murray and Smith questioned? Mainstream media coverage of Smith was limited, but some supportive niche media emphasised his artist-activist credentials. This is perhaps partly due to the ‘safe’ seat he was contesting, which was never likely to change hands; he could not be argued to be disrupting ‘legitimate’ electoral politics. The campaign was also constructed around a positive, niche single issue - the importance of art education both culturally and in economic terms - which could be treated by other candidates and the media as a legitimate (but marginal) topic.
