Foreword

For many years now the recording and protection afforded to the historic environment has been bound within the provisions of a number legislative Acts of Parliament. Indeed, the Vale of Glamorgan has over 100 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, over 700 Listed Buildings and 38 Conservation Areas that are afforded statutory protection by legislation.

However, this system of statutory recognition, by its nature, only takes account of items of exceptional significance. Often there are locally important buildings that although acknowledged not to be of ‘national’ or ‘exceptional’ importance, are considered key examples of vernacular architecture or buildings, which have an important local history. It is these buildings which are often the main contributors to local distinctiveness, but which have to date, remained un-surveyed and afforded little recognition or protection.

The original County Treasures project was published by the then South Glamorgan County Council in the late 1970’s. It was conceived as a locally adopted inventory of ‘special features’ in the former County area.

However, as a result of local government restructuring, the changes to local authority boundaries, as well as changes in responsibilities and funding mechanisms the survey was never completed, and as a consequence was not comprehensive in its coverage.

In the three decades that have passed since the original survey was attempted, the loss of a number of local buildings and landmarks, and the redevelopment of unprotected sites make the County Treasures project as relevant today as it was then. This publication is the culmination of the efforts of many individuals and groups who have been generously giving of their knowledge, time and commitment over a nearly ten year period, and without whom the County Treasures project would never have been possible. To all those involved, I extend my heart felt thanks in recognition of a job well done.

We should be proud, therefore, that this version of the County Treasures survey is complete, robust and comprehensive. It is in another respect even more valuable than its predecessor, in that this Inventory has not been compiled by the local authority, but by the communities of the Vale themselves.

Each of the 27 community areas within the Vale were surveyed by a volunteer workforce of local people, teachers, history society members, local Councillors and other interested individuals, who gave willingly and freely of their time to reveal and record the very many items that could conceivably be of architectural and historic interest; and which, further to detailed scrutiny, research and qualification, were considered worthy of inclusion. This inventory, therefore, more than any other provides an account of what is considered of local importance by local people.

The complete Treasures Inventory contains some 1200 entries. It contains a schedule giving the name of each treasure, its description, its current means of statutory protection (where relevant), a grid reference, map and photograph.

This 2007 Inventory should not however be seen as a ‘final product’, and although it indeed provides an excellent account and record at a fixed point in time, it also provides a framework for future additions and amendments, as more or new buildings become apparent, new information or change occurs.

i It is hoped that the Vale of Glamorgan County Treasures Inventory will serve several purposes: • It will stimulate local, and wider interest, and promote care and maintenance of identified treasures. • It will act as a valuable educational resource, perhaps allowing local schoolchildren to research locally as well as nationally significant events and buildings. • It will ensure that treasures are fully regarded in the planning process where they are threatened by development pressures. • It will stimulate protectionist policies within forthcoming development plans and perhaps the recognition of further areas for statutory designation.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cadw, The Civic Trust for Wales, The Penarth Society, and The Vale Council for Voluntary Services have supported this project.

Every attempt has been made to ensure that this document is as accurate as possible. The survey was undertaken between 2002 and 2007.

n Redbrink Cn Covering approximately 7 acres the Basin (later No. 3 Dock) was opened in 1894 as the tidal entrance to No. 1 Dock. Walls are constructed of large snecked blocks of squared reddish stone; granite coping, dressings, and treads to steps down to water.

The former Dock Offices is the truly iconic building of Barry and a powerful symbol of the town's inextricable link with its maritime past. Designed by Cardiff architect Arthur E. Bell it was built in 1898, the construction being supervised by the architect's father, James Bell the resident engineer of the Barry Railway Co. for use as their offices. Designed in a grand Neo-Baroque/Wrenaissance style the building has many fine external and internal features of note including; the well proportioned symmetrical elevations and tall stone clock tower. There are reported to be exactly 365 windows, one for each day of the year. Damaged by fire in 1984 much of the clock tower and upper storey roofs has to be rebuilt. It is a testimony to the restoration work that the building has lost none of its original grandeur.

Standing figure of David Davies founded by George Broad and Sons, London. Figure is composed with left foot forward and studying plans of his dock and railway developments. Statue is sited on a square granite pedestal that is stepped out to a high base and broad cornice. Inscribed panels commemorate David Davies as the "Chief Promoter of the Barry Dock and Railway Company".

In 1858 Francis Crawshay built the ‘Marine Hotel’, now Friars Point House, 'for the more select Victorian visitor'. The building was bought 1873 by J D Traherne who enlarged the house, and renamed it the Pier Hotel. The Traherne's additions were later demolished by Lord Windsor who took over house in 1894, and renamed it Friars Point House. The house was remodelled in an Arts & Crafts Jacobethan style circa 1900 by Sir William Graham, especially the interior. In 1911 he made further improvements to grounds.

B 8 Located near to the Barry Railway Station, this was once a thriving hotel built circa 1890. Constructed of brick with bathstone dressings the building dominates in the streetscape with its three storeys plus an attic and basement. The imposing nature of the building is further enhanced by a high polygonal corner bay featuring panelled piers and floral capitals. A good example of late C19 hotel architecture.

S TR E 88 ET Built of coursed grey lias limestone walls, with red brick and bath stone the school dominates the skyline. The first school was built on the site in 1879 and accommodated 72 children. By 1887 it was enlarged to cater for 240 pupils, and by 1895 it was further enlarged to take in the influx of children of people engaged on the construction of the docks and the town.

D W Footings of a substantial Roman building constructed of local limestone and originally roofed with ceramic tiles, on a point overlooking the Bristol Channel and incongruously set amongst modern seaside development. Up to nineteen rooms surrounded a central courtyard. It is unknown whether the building was of more than one storey. An external veranda ran the length of the South West side. Construction began towards the end of the C3 but seems not to have been completed. This and other evidence for Roman activity suggests that the building may have been intended as a storehouse or as an official guesthouse, as part of maritime link between South Wales and South West England. It is thought that the building, if it was ever completed, was only in use for a short time before being stripped and demolished.

Ruins of small pilgrimage chapel of C12 - C14 origin. Said to be the site of the grave of a Celtic saint, thought to be an itinerant Irishman, Barruc alias Finbar, the patron saint of Cork. The remains consist of the chancel, nave and south porch. Priest's house or oratory adjoining chapel to the immediate North. Excavation shows that the building was built on the site of an older burial ground. The chapel was abandoned in the early 16th century and the ruins were gradually engulfed by sand dunes.

Garden suburb West of Romilly Park. Laid out in 1914 by T. Alwyn Lloyd in conjunction with Sir Raymond Unwin for Barry Garden Suburb Ltd, under the aegis of the Welsh Town Planning and Housing Trust. The houses were mostly planned in semi-detached pairs in a roughly concentric layout.

Cottage built by the Romilly Estate as the home for their harbour master. The building contained a horse stable and carriage house with living accommodation over them at the northern end. The original dwelling was also built with a well in the kitchen and a cellar. Constructed of local lias limestone with yellow brick quoins to all external corners. The windows and doorways all have yellow brick soldier headers and quoins. Said to be the last house built in Old Barry before the construction of the Barry Docks and the new town.

Commissioned in 1995 to commemorate local seamen who lost their lives during the two World Wars. The Monument Designed by Phillip Chatfield depicts a globe, capstone and shaft, with a plinth. The base illustrates the Merchant Navy Badge and records the names of men who lost their lives.

Shop fronts with offices over built 1891-2. Complete original shop front at No 80 (Howell) with curved double fronts, recessed doorway under timber fascia and end pilasters. Shop fronts retain slender colonnettes with art nouveau brackets and original coloured glazing.

School built 1890-2 designed by Seward Thomas. Typical gabled main façade of rigid symmetry, the pilaster strips on the upper storey an unusually clear reminiscence of the London school idiom. Red brick sparingly dressed with red sand stone. The two-storey range for boys and girls faces the major road, the infants around the corner in Court Road. The School was reputed to be the largest school in Wales at that time, with a capacity for over 2,000 pupils.

2 3 1 CR 7 Former town hall and library constructed of red brick with bathstone dressings. Former library has bathstone frontispiece with entrance features including giant ionic columns. The clock tower has a copper dome with louvres . The entrance to the former public offices comprises a bathstone frontispiece with giant paired ionic columns, a cartouche in full relief with flanking female figures personifying Justice and a seated stone lion. The building follows a prize winning design by Charles E Hutchinson and E Harding Payne of 1902-03. The library was completed in 1906. Fully refurbished and extended 2005/06 as new library and offices for Vale of Glamorgan Council.

This is the largest and best preserved of the remaining medieval dovecotes in Glamorgan. Originating in the C13 it is constructed of stone rubble walls with a corbelled vaulted roof. The interior walls are lined with the remains of some 700 nesting holes.

Large church designed by the prominent Cardiff architect Col E M Bruce Vaughan (1865- 1919) in an eclectic gothic style. Built in two stages, the nave in 1908, chancel and tower in 1915. Imposing church tower is a feature with polygonal stair turret at its north east corner, castellated parapet, large louvered windows to the bell stage and a clock facing north. The church is listed as a notable large-scale example in a late Gothic Revival style.

Known locally as 'Barry Castle' the building was in fact a fortified manor house originally established on the site in C12. The upstanding remains date from circa 1300 - 1350 and compromise a vaulted entrance gateway with provision for drawbridge and portcullis. The manor house would have consisted of three blocks arranged around a courtyard area. There is also evidence to suggest a first floor hall existed over a basement.

Originally built as a church and known as St. Francis-on-the-Hill, Barry. The church was designed by architect Mr T. Alwyn Lloyd. The building became disused and fell into disrepair but was recently refurbished and extended as 'The Millennium Centre'. It is now used for community activities of all kinds.

1 R 0 Originally worshipping at East Barry House, and then a cottage in Old Village Road, the Methodists purchased land on the corner of Romilly Road and Porthkerry Road, and met in a hall until the present church was built and dedicated in 1898. A fine example of a late C19 church in a Gothic style. Designed by J P Jones, Richards, and Budgen, architects, of Cardiff.

m u An impressive structure carrying two railway lines 110ft above the valley floor constructed in rock-faced stone and comprising sixteen semi-circular headed arches with imposts and parapets. The viaduct spans Porthkerry Country Park and was built to connect Barry with collieries in Mid Glamorgan and to the agricultural region of the Vale. The line opened on 1st December 1897, but disaster struck on 10th January the following year when one of the piers slipped and that part of the line was closed at once. A loop line was made 2½ miles to the north and this was used while repairs were made. It was passed fit to use with goods trains on 8 January 1900, and passengers on 9 April 1900.

An octagonal C15 cross base set on a stepped platform and restored in 1894 with the addition of a cross. The C19 cross has tapering octagonal shaft and head with fleur-de-lys reliefs. An inscription plate bears the message "To the glory of God and in loving memory of Frederick and Elizabeth Romilly this ancient cross is restored by their surviving sons and daughters 1894". Further substantially repaired in recent years.

n The original church on this site appeared on C14 navigation charts as 'S. Niccola' or 'Sannicola'. It was known to have been completely whitewashed and used as a 'sea-mark'. The church was dismantled in C19 and built on new alignment. The architect was John Romilly Allen who was related to the late Samuel Romilly 1757-1818. The churchyard has remained relatively unaltered since the C19, except for the addition of several C20 graves. Here are buried the C19 explorer Hugh Hastings Romilly as well as a victim of the bombing raids on Barry during the Second World War.

It was able to obtain a license by transferring it from an existing licensed premises and demolishing the older building. No record of the appointment of an architect has been found, but all references to the project suggest that the design was the work of J C Pardoe, Surveyor to the Council. The former fire station is a detached building comprising of a main three storey block fronting Court Road with a five storey look-out tower to the rear. The well proportioned and distinctively detailed elevations are of yellow facing brickwork enlivened with red brick string courses and arches with dressed stone springers and keystones. The look-out tower has a lead lined pavilion roof with a railed look-out platform.

Remains of mill and leat, probably medieval, visible as a depression in ground adjacent to embanked pond. The earthwork remains of Cliffwood medieval mill, partially excavated, are much as described in the Glamorgan Inventory, vol III (ii), p.372. Excavation of the mill site, in 1978, revealed a stone building, 11m NW-SE by 7.0m, with a wheel pit on the NE side, in association with C13-14 pottery. Thought to have been disused by 1622.
