Ram Chandra Paudel and Bikash Sherchan Infrastructure Engineering and Management Program Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering Pashchimanchal Campus, Institute of Engineering Tribhuvan University, Nepal *Email: [email protected] Abstract Gandaki province has the good potentiality of hydro-electricity generation with existing twenty- nine hydro-electricity projects. Since the Province is rich in water resources, analysis of watersheds needs to be done for management, planning and identification of water as well as natural resources. GIS offers integration of spatial and no spatial data to understand and analyze the watershed processes and helps in drawing a plan for integrated watershed development and management. The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) available on the NASA-Earth data has been taken as a primary data for morphometric analysis of watershed in Gandaki Province using QGIS. Delineation of watershed was conducted from a DEM by computing the flow direction and using it in the Watershed tool. Necessary fill sink correction was made before proceeding to delineation. A raster representing the direction of flow was created using Flow Direction tool to determine contributing area. Flow accumulation raster was created from flow direction raster using Flow Accumulation Tool. A point- based method has been used to delineate watershed for each selected point. The selected point may be an outlet, a gauge station or a dam. The annual rainfall data from ground meteorological stations has been used in QGIS to generate rainfall map for the study of rainfall pattern in the province and watersheds using IDW Interpolation method. -

It boasts a large diversity of flora and fauna at genetic, species and ecosystem levels. Nepal has several critical sites and wetlands including the fragile Churia ecosystem. These critical sites and biodiversity are subjected to various anthropogenic and climatic threats. Several bilateral partners and donors are working in partnership with the Government of Nepal to conserve Nepal’s rich natural heritage. USAID funded Hariyo Ban Program, implemented by a consortium of four partners with WWF Nepal leading alongside CARE Nepal, FECOFUN and NTNC, is working towards reducing the adverse impacts of climate change, threats to biodiversity and improving livelihoods of the people in Nepal. -

Journal of Food Science and Engineering 7 (2017) 151-160 doi: 10.17265/2159-5828/2017.03.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING Contribution of Rupa Lake for Sustainable Food Security and Local Climate Change Sajani Shrestha Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu 44600, Nepal Abstract: Rupa Lake is small advancing eutrophic lake covering about 115 ha of the Lekhnath Municipality in Kaski district of western Nepal. The environment around the lake has been improved over a period of 10 years. Conservation practices were initiated by communities including the Rupa Lake Restoration and Fishery Cooperative (RLRFC). As a result, an abundance of non-timber Forest Products (NTFP) has increased considerably. At present, 49 NTFP are available in the lake basin. Some households (HH) i.e 10% has additional income from NTFP. It is an indirect source of food security for local people. They sell NTFP products to generate income. A few households have already started farming of NTFPs. Availability of fodder and fuel wood from community forest has significantly contributed to the livelihoods of people where as wild edible fruits and vegetables have become supplementary for food security. There is yearly food security for 57% of HH with 22% having surplus food. 5% of HH has food security for less than three months where as 19% HHs have food security for more than six months. However, livelihood and nutritional security have improved by fish farming in lake. This lake is most important for the local environment and also helps eco-tourism. The study found that 92% observed the climate change in the form of a rise in temperature (> 70% HHs); unpredictable rainfall (> 75% HHs); shifting rainfall (> 60% HHs); phonological changes (> 50%). -

Journal of Fisheries 7(2): 706–713. Abstract Inland fisheries provide food security, livelihood and well-being to community. Fisheries management of lakes is a complex process, influenced by many drivers. In this study the driver of fisheries of lakes of Pokhara Valley were determined through interview of Jalari fishers, key informants and field visits from July 2016 to June 2017. Key drivers were illegal fishing, siltation, loss of fish habitat, water pollution and accelerated eutrophication, intensification of agriculture, biological invasion and developmental works. These drivers have played a key role in changing lake characteristics including lake size, water quality, water depth and natural food availability which subsequently affected the cage aquaculture and capture fisheries of the lake. This paper included an insight of these drivers along with strategy to mitigate them to ensure sustainable fisheries. The species is categorized as Near Threatened in the National Red List Assessment estimating its population as 1,000-4,000 individuals which is not based on a comprehensive status survey. Here, we review the past reports of the status and distribution of Eurasian otters in Nepal, and provide an update on the basis of literature review and a limited test surveys of some wetlands. We conclude that there has not been a single verifiable and conclusive record of the Eurasian otter in Nepal in recent years. Recent verifiable reports of otters have been entirely of smooth-coated otters. We suggest that there may have been a dramatic countrywide decline of Eurasian otter from their former ranges. Anthropogenic threats, illegal trade and habitat degradation threaten otter species throughout Asia, and reliable scientific and genetic studies are needed to get clear understanding of Eurasian otter status in Nepal.
