SIDELIGHTS: Guitarist and songwriter Andy Summers grew up in Bournemouth, England, where his father owned a restaurant. He was first exposed to music through his brother’s jazz record collection, the local jazz scene, and his own childhood piano lessons. Summers loved music and soon moved on to playing the guitar, becoming truly serious about music when he was fourteen years old. His first regular gig was at a local jazz club with a hotel band when he was just sixteen. He then met George “Zoot” Money, and the two went to London to form the rhythm-and-blues band, the Big Roll Band jazz ensemble, and record the album, The All Happening Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band at Klook’s Kleek . From there, Summers went on to play with a number of groups, including Dantalion’s Chariot, Soft Machine, and the Animals. Then in the spring of 1977, he met rockers Stewart Copeland and Sting of the newly formed band The Police at an event in London. Summers went on to join the band, becoming their primary guitar player when their previous guitarist Henri Padovani left the group. The Police experienced a rapid rise in popularity, and Summers contributed to that success, playing on the group’s most famous albums, including Outlandos D’Amour , in 1978, Reggatta De Blanc , in 1979, Zenyatta Mondatta , in 1980, Ghosts in the Machine , in 1981, and Synchronicity , in 1983. Although the group eventually disbanded, Summers continued to produce music, in conjunction with guitarist Robert Fripp, and as a solo artist. On his own, he returned to his jazz roots, producing a number of jazz albums, including The Last Dance of Mr. X . In addition to his music, Summers has written a book on playing the guitar, Light Strings: Impressions of the Guitar , which includes photographs by Ralph Gibson, and an autobiographical work, One Train Later: A Memoir . Summer’s memoir deals both with his meteoric rise with The Police and with his earlier career as part of the British rock scene in the 1960s, and what it was like to grow up in England in the 1950s. Todd Spires, in a review for the Library Journal , remarked: “This terrific book should be in demand in public libraries.” Dave Itzkoff, writing for the New York Times , noted that Summers remained “sufficiently impartial to recognize that The Police were beneficiaries of both talent and good timing.” A reviewer for Publishers Weekly called the book “an honest travelogue of a British kid who. traversed the most coveted landscapes of pop culture and lived to write about it.” Summers himself remarked of his experience with The Police: “I wish I could put my finger on why we we’re so successful. I think everyone wants to understand that secret. I think because the reggae/ska sound was relatively new to the States, and had not been worked into the pop/punk hybrid coming out of the UK, people were just completely turned on by it. We loved the freedom of working in a number of forms, and creating a signature sound that took years for others to duplicate.” BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL SOURCES. BOOKS. Scott Fitzgerald, was an American novelist and short story writer, whose works illustrate the Jazz Age. While he achieved limited success in his lifetime, he is now widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night. A fifth, unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon, was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also authored 4 collections of short stories, as well as 164 short stories in magazines during his lifetime. • Reggatta De Blanc” Analyzing Style in the Music of the Police Mark Spicer
six % “Reggatta de Blanc” Analyzing Style in the Music of the Police mark spicer the issue of style in popular music analysis remains a thorny one. For some artists, it might seem that identifying their style is quite straightforward (Nirvana was the consummate “grunge” band, for example), yet for many artists (the Beatles being probably the most ob- vious example) it is impossible to categorize them within the boundaries of one particular style; indeed, stylistic eclecticism becomes the de‹ning feature of their music. My intent in this chapter is to confront this very issue of stylistic eclec- ticism by focusing on a body of work that offers a particularly interesting case study in this regard, namely, the music of the Police. This ground- breaking trio—consisting of drummer Stewart Copeland, bassist, lead vocalist, and main composer Sting (born Gordon Sumner), and guitarist Andy Summers—was formed in London in 1977, an especially turbulent year in the history of British pop. On the one hand, punk, led by bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash, was at the height of its popularity; on the other hand, disco, imported mainly from the United States and fueled by the massive transatlantic success of the movie Saturday Night Fever and its accompanying soundtrack album, was all the rage for those (slightly older) young adults who did not relish the idea of dyeing and spiking their hair or piercing their cheeks with safety pins.1 Table 6.1 shows a chronology of the ‹ve studio albums released by the Police over the course of their relatively brief career together, from their 1978 debut Outlandos d’Amour through their 1983 swan song Syn- 124 “Reggatta de Blanc” 125 TABLE 6.1.

The "emigration" of rock music from the USA to Britain was not only beneficial but even pivotal for the development and propagation of rock music. First of all, rock music was digested by the British "fashion" industry, which transformed it into a well-publicized, iconic commodity, thus generating cash- cow phenomena such as the Beatles. In Britain rock music became "trendy" when in the USA it was still, mainly, an underground, cult (and occasionally taboo) phenomenon, boycotted by both the major record companies and the (puritan) middle-class audience. The British media made rock music fashionable. If rock music had remained the music of Dylan, Fugs, Zappa and Velvet Underground, it would have remained a cultural phenomenon with a huge impact, capable of producing artistic masterpieces and generating intellectual debates, but, most likely, it would have never captured the imagination of the masses the way it did during the late 1960s. In the USA, rock music had been perceived as a revolutionary event, very much related to a generational gap (between the "great" generation and the "hippy" generation) and an ideological gap (between the Establishment and the underground).
