Kenneth Alvin's Guitar Craft Level I (Lebanon, NJ, Sept. 2000) Course Diary September 2, 2000 12.40 CDT On my way to Lebanon NJ by way of Newark. This is the second leg of the trip; first flight was from Albuquerque to Houston, I managed to fit everything into a new backpack/wheelie Carol bought for me, plus my laptop case and, of course, the guitar. Hope I didn't forget something... Personal aims for GC Level I course: • Experience the possibilities afforded by a long-term commitment to music and craft, in order to determine the level of my own long-term commitment. • Establish a basis for my personal practice (guidance on technique, exercises, approach) • Make connections to the GC community for future development, collaborations, etc. Summary: We start where we start (a constraint and a gift), but the direction of our development is more malleable. I'm excited and a little apprehensive. A treat: we're scheduled to arrive approximately 20 minutes early. I was hesitant to book this particular itinerary because it was cutting so close to the deadline for arrival in Newark. And given the state of the airlines and on-time arrival statistics, well, it seemed iffy. I'm glad that it worked out. If there is any hope of producing nuclear fusion on early, my backpack is it. What transmutation results from the fusion of cotton? By the way, it struck me while packing last night that practically everything I own, including the wheelie backpack, laptop case, and clothes are made by Eddie Bauer.

Religion and the Arts 21 (2017) 236–258 RELIGION and the ARTS brill.com/rart “Turning Ourselves” Fripp, Bennett, Gurdjieff David G. Robertson University of Edinburgh Abstract In 1974, Robert Fripp—leader of the progressive rock group King Crimson—had a spiritual experience in which “the top of [his] head blew off.” He became a student of J. G. Bennett, himself a former student of G. I. Gurdjieff, at Sherborne House in Gloucestershire, and remains a member of the Bennett Foundation to this day. When Fripp returned to the music industry, it was with an approach that favored disciplined and geometric compositions over the jagged improvisation of the earlier period. This article explores the influence of Gurdjieff and Bennett’s teaching upon Fripp and his work, and his apparent attempts to realize the former’s idea of “objective art” through his music. I pay particular attention to the development of Guitar Craft, in which Fripp applies Gurdjieff’s techniques through the teaching of the guitar. I argue that Fripp’s teaching is a little examined scion of the Gurdjieff lineage, and a case study of discrete cultural production. Keywords Robert Fripp – G. I. Gurdjieff – J. G. Bennett – Fourth Way – progressive rock … Spirituality is not identical with religion. The artist, who looks for a quality in his art that this world cannot give, is a spiritual man even if he denies religion. bennett, A Spiritual Psychology 9 ∵ © koninklijke brill nv, leiden, 2017 | doi: 10.1163/15685292-02101010 Downloaded from Brill.com09/25/2021 10:37:42PM via free access “turning ourselves” 237 i Introduction In 1974,Robert Fripp, the phlegmatic guitarist and leader of the progressive rock group King Crimson, claimed that “the top of [his] head blew off” while reading the First Inaugural Address of J.

  • Guitar Craft: a Brief Introductory Guide to Practice
Guitar Craft: A Brief Introductory Guide to Practice Michael Grenfell Begun: 18th August 2011 Holy Isle, Scotland 1 Guitar Craft1 is a way of developing: I. A relationship to the Guitar; II. A relationship to music; III. A relationship to yourself… …. By implication, a relationship to life. It is a practical activity based on principles of application. 1 The inaugural Guitar Craft course began on 25th March 1985. It took place at the American Society for Continuous Education, near Claymont Court in Charles Town, West Virginia, USA. In March 2015, a Completion course was held in Sassoferato, Italy. This also marked its 25th Anniversary. Since then, although Guitar Craft has ‘ceased to exist’, activities of its students, mentors and teachers have continued with a focus on the Guitar Circle, often including the Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists. 2 Key Principles I. Honour Necessity; II. Honour Sufficiency. The first is a principle of Qualitative Endeavour; the second is a principle of Quantitative Endeavor. These two can be brought to any activity – whether guitar or non-guitar based: for example, picking up the guitar, sitting down, striking a single note, walking out of the room. The principles lead to the quality of ‘rightness’: Guitar Craft has been described as ‘doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way, rightly’. Question: How do I know what is right? Answer: How can you not know? (You know in your heart). So, what prevents you from knowing? 3 Key Components of Guitar Craft Concepts Discipline (Head; Hands; Heart) Practice

  • A Week at Guitar Craft with Robert Fripp
A Week at Guitar Craft with Robert Fripp Robert Fripp has been an influential figure in how I have approached living life and making music ever since I encountered the music of King Crimson, and read Eric Tamm’s book Robert Fripp: From King Crimson to Guitar Craft. I had read about Tamm’s experience of Guitar Craft and I was intrigued with Fripp’s pedagogy. Put plainly, Fripp described Guitar Craft as a course designed to develop a relationship with the guitar, the music, and oneself.1 There are many elements that distinguish Guitar Craft pedagogy from other guitar methods. Guitar Craft uses the New Standard Tuning, which according to Fripp emerged in September of 1983 while sweating in a sauna.2 The tuning ascends in perfect fifths starting low to high beginning with C, G, D, A, E, and finally a minor third to G. This new tuning allows guitarists to get away from conventional playing patterns. Also, a new timbre emerges from the guitar because of the different string tensions afforded by the new tuning. Fripp has since renamed the New Standard Tuning to Guitar Craft Standard Tuning. Of course, Guitar Craft is more than just a new tuning and a new approach to guitar playing. For many Guitar Craft participants, the development of a personal presence and mindful attention is a necessary condition to music making. Participants develop these qualities through various activities and exercises including learning Alexander Technique, Tai Chi Chuan, and the Morning Sitting. My experiences of these activities and exercises are detailed in the journal entries that follow.
