Socrates and the Theaetetus
THE ORIGIN OF THE ‘GETTIER’ PROBLEM: SOCRATES AND THE THEAETETUS Michael JENKINS ABSTRACT: This article discusses the origin of what has become known as the Gettier Problem. It examines the claim put forward, though not expounded or defended, by J. Angelo Corlett in Analyzing Social Knowledge that the basis for Edmund Gettier’s article “Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?” was originally argued for in Plato’s Theaetetus. In his article, Gettier argues that the Justified True Belief condition is not sufficient for knowledge. However, Corlett questions the originality of this argument. This article examines Gettier’s article followed by the Theatetus. After which, the two articles are compared, and the claim is shown to be correct in accusing Gettier of failing consider the full work of the Theaetetus. Socrates also argued that the Justified True Belief condition was not sufficient for knowledge. However, this article concludes by arguing that Socrates went further with his examination than Gettier did. Socrates not only put forward the claim that this condition was insufficient for knowledge, he also tried to supply answers to the problem. KEYWORDS: Gettier, Theaetetus, epistemology, Socrates, coherentism, justification 1. Introduction In Analyzing Social Knowledge, J. Angelo Corlett states that Edmund L. Gettier, in his infamous article “Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?”1 seems to merely reiterate what Socrates (in Plato’s Theaetetus) already articulates: that “simple justified true belief is insufficient for knowledge.”2 In this article, I will argue that Corlett’s statement is correct. I will argue that it originated not with Gettier, but at least as far back into the writing of western philosophy as Socrates. -

This study argues that a pragmatic conception of religion would enable philosophers to make important contributions to our ability to handle concrete problems involving religion. The term ’philosophical anthropology’, referring to different interpretative frameworks, which philosophers draw on to develop conceptions of human phenomena, is introduced. It is argued that the classical pragmatists embraced a philosophical anthro- pology significantly different from that embraced by most philosophers of religion; accordingly, pragmatism offers an alternative conception of religion. It is suggested that a conception of religion is superior to another if it makes more promising contributions to our ability to handle extra-philosophical problems of religion. A pragmatic philosophical anthropology urges us to view human practices as taking shape as responses to shared experienced needs. Religious practices develop to resolve tensions in our views of life. The pictures of human flourishing they present reconstruct our views of life, thereby allowing more significant interaction with the environment, and a more significant life. A modified version of reflective equilibrium is developed to show how we, on a pragmatic conception of religion, are able to supply resources for criticism and reform of religious practices, so the extra-philosophical problems of religion can be handled. -
Some Reflections on Gettier's Problem
Some Reflections on Gettier’s Problem Golam Azam * It is one of the basic problems of epistemology to define knowledge. Epistemology is one of the branches of philosophy that discusses about the definition, sources, validity and limitations of knowledge. From Socrates to till date this problem is being discussed by most of the eminent philosophers; ancient, medieval, modern or contemporary- eastern or western- Indian, Muslim, Chinese or Buddhist philosophers. Why knowledge is important, what the criterion of truth is, are also the basic issues of discussion of the philosophers of the ages. E. Gettier, an American epistemologist, published a paper of only three pages entitled “Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?” in 1963 where he challenged the age-old definition of knowledge. Traditionally knowledge is defined as ‘justified true belief’. Gettier showed that these three conditions are not enough for the definition of knowledge. In this paper, Gettier’s conception regarding the definition of knowledge will be analyzed and in this connection the reaction of the contemporary epistemologists will also be interpreted and analyzed. It will be showed that now a day the fundamental problem of knowledge is not to define ‘knowledge’ rather the problem is mainly regarding the justification of the statement of knowledge. I Before the publication of Gettier's paper knowledge was widely defined as justified true belief. It is the pre-Gettier definition of knowledge. After the publication of Gettier’s paper the term ‘Gettier problem’ has become well known to the contemporary philosophers. Gettier problems or cases are named in honor of the American philosopher Edmund Gettier. -

In it is demonstrated the significance of epistemological themes for Augustine and their inseparability from practical and religious concerns. It is also shown how these issues unfold within the logic ofAugustine's trinitarianism, which informs the argument even ofhis earliest works. This, in turn, demonstrates the depth of the young Augustine's engagement with Christian categories in works often thought to be determined wholly, or almost wholly, by the logic of Plotinian Neo-Platonism. Specifically, I review the recent research of these philosophers in two areas: Chinese Philosophy and epistemology. In each area, I focus on two topics that have caught the attention of a lot of Chinese philosophers. I argue that the Chinese philosophers’ research on these topics has two prevalent problems: (i) a lot of argu- ments they make are weak; (ii) they tend not to critically engage with others. I discuss a metaphilosophical objection that weak argumentation and disengagement are not vices of philosophical research. I also try to make sense of (i) and (ii) in terms of some cultural factors. Moritz Schlick and Bas van Fraassen: Two Different Perspectives on Causality and Quantum Mechanics Richard Dawid1 Moritz Schlick’s interpretation of the causality principle is based on Schlick’s understanding of quantum mechanics and on his conviction that quantum mechanics strongly supports an empiricist reading of causation in his sense. The present paper compares the empiricist position held by Schlick with Bas van Fraassen’s more recent conception of constructive empiricism. It is pointed out that the development from Schlick’s understanding of logical empiricism to constructive empiricism reflects a difference between the understanding of quantum mechanics endorsed by Schlick and the understanding that had been established at the time of van Fraassen’s writing. 1: Introduction Moritz Schlick’s ideas about causality and quantum mechanics dealt with a topic that was at the forefront of research in physics and philosophy of science at the time. In the present article, I want to discuss the plausibility of Schlick’s ideas within the scientific context of the time and compare it with a view based on a modern understanding of quantum mechanics. Schlick had already written about his understanding of causation in [Schlick 1920] before he set out to develop a new account of causation in “Die Kausalität in der gegenwärtigen Physik” [Schlick 1931]. The very substantial differences between the concepts of causality developed in the two papers are due to important philosophical as well as physical developments. Philosophically, [Schlick 1931] accounts for Schlick’s shift from his earlier position of critical realism towards his endorsement of core tenets of logical empiricism. -

Although superficially an implausible position, it is capable of presenting strong arguments in its favour, and has been growing in popularity. After briefly introducing the concept and the motivations for it, I will present a common objection (the finite minds problem) as well as a powerful reply which couches Infinitism in dispositional terms. I will then attempt to undermine this counter- objection by drawing parallels between it and the problems raised against semantic dispositionalism by Kripke’s exegesis of Wittgenstein’s private language argument. I One of the most obvious responses to infinitism is the finite minds objection. The objection itself if extremely simple, but its ramifications are rather complex. Given the assumption that we are in fact finite creatures (with finite minds), and given that propositional justification consists in infinite non-repeating chains, it follows that we can never have doxastic justification for any proposition whatsoever. -

Philosophy 5340 – Epistemology Topic 6: Theories of Justification: Foundationalism versus Coherentism Part 3: Foundationalism Versus Foundherentism Introductory Remarks Comparing foundationalism with Susan Haack’s ‘foundherentism’ is a slightly tricky matter. First of all, foundationalism comes in significantly different varieties. In particular, there are some very significant differences between the type of foundationalism associated with indirect realism, and the type of foundationalism that Mike Huemer advances in his defense of direct realism. Secondly, Haack’s account of foundherentism is not as clear and precise at crucial points as it could be. To handle the first problem, I shall compare foundherentism with both types of foundationalism whenever necessary. 1. Is there a Privileged Class of Beliefs that Can Be Non-Inferentially Justified? Foundherentism 1. Haack says that foundherentism does not involve any privileged class of beliefs that can be non-inferentially justified. 2. The reason for this denial is that certain states are part of a person’s experiential S- evidence – namely, one’s present perceptual experiences, introspective awareness of one’s own mental goings-on, and memory traces of one’s earlier perceptual and introspective states – and their being part of one’s experiential S-evidence does not depend upon one’s having any beliefs about those states. Because of this, any propositions that are sufficiently supported by such propositions to be justified will be non-inferentially justified, since there will be no justified beliefs at earlier stages in the causal process that leads to the beliefs in question. Foundationalism – Indirect Realist Version 1. There is a privileged class of beliefs that can be non-inferentially justified. -

Logical Positivism (see Scientific Empiricism (1)) holds that those metaphysical statements which are not confirmable by experiences (see Verification 4, 5) have no cognitive meaning and hence are pseudo-statements (see Meaning, Kinds of, 1, 5). — R.C. Basic Sentences, Protocol Sentences: Sentences formulating the result of observations or perceptions or other experiences, furnishing the basis for empirical verification or confirmation (see Verification). Some philosophers take sentences concerning observable properties of physical things as basic sentences, others take sentences concerning sense-data or perceptions. The sentences of the latter kind are regarded by some philosophers as completely verifiable, while others believe that all factual sentences can be confirmed only to some degree. An expression (sen- tence) has cognitive (or theoretical, assertive) meaning, if it asserts something and hence is either true or false. In this case, it is called a cognitive sentence or (cognitive, genuine) statement; it has usually the form of a declarative sentence. -

TRUTH ANALYSIS OF THE GETTIER ARGUMENT YUSSIF YAKUBU Published in: METAPHILOSOPHY Vol. 47, No. 3, July 2016, 449-466 Abstract: Gettier (1963) presented the now famous Gettier problem as a challenge to epistemology. The methods Gettier used to construct his challenge, however, utilized certain principles of formal logic that are actually inappropriate for the natural language discourse of the Gettier cases. In that challenge to epistemology, Gettier also makes truth claims that would be considered controversial in analytic philosophy of language. The Gettier challenge has escaped scrutiny in these other relevant academic disciplines, however, because of its fac¸adeas an epistemological analysis. This article examines Gettiers methods with the analytical tools of logic and analytic philosophy of language. Introduction Gettier cases are hypothetical scenarios that purport to demonstrate, contrary to the standard epistemological view, that justified true belief (JTB) is not a sufficient condition for knowledge. In a typical Gettier- type case, a premise that “justifiably” leads an agent to a belief turns out to be false, but the belief the agent derives turns out “by coinci- dence to be true.” The believing agent in question is thus deemed to have a true belief that is justifiably reached, and he therefore, while satisfying the conditions for knowledge, nevertheless does not have knowledge, because the premise upon which he formed his belief is false. Epistemologists have generally taken Gettiers arguments against JTB to be successful, and have been trying, for the five decades since Gettiers paper, to come up with a definition or conception of knowl- edge that would not be undermined by the Gettier-challenge (Zagzeb- ski 1994; Shope 2002, 33; Sosa 2007; see also Kvanvig 2011, 29).
