This study argues that a pragmatic conception of religion would enable philosophers to make important contributions to our ability to handle concrete problems involving religion. The term ’philosophical anthropology’, referring to different interpretative frameworks, which philosophers draw on to develop conceptions of human phenomena, is introduced. It is argued that the classical pragmatists embraced a philosophical anthro- pology significantly different from that embraced by most philosophers of religion; accordingly, pragmatism offers an alternative conception of religion. It is suggested that a conception of religion is superior to another if it makes more promising contributions to our ability to handle extra-philosophical problems of religion. A pragmatic philosophical anthropology urges us to view human practices as taking shape as responses to shared experienced needs. Religious practices develop to resolve tensions in our views of life. The pictures of human flourishing they present reconstruct our views of life, thereby allowing more significant interaction with the environment, and a more significant life. A modified version of reflective equilibrium is developed to show how we, on a pragmatic conception of religion, are able to supply resources for criticism and reform of religious practices, so the extra-philosophical problems of religion can be handled. -

HEGEL’S CRITIQUE OF ANCIENT SKEPTICISM by JAY WOOD Under the Direction of Dr. Sebastian Rand ABSTRACT Recent work on the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel has emphasized his interest in skeptical concerns. These contemporary scholars argue that, despite common opinions to the contrary, Hegel actually had a very keen interest in skepticism, one that informed and motivated much of his overall project. While I welcome this recent literature, I argue here that contemporary scholars have overemphasized the importance of skepticism for Hegel. By looking closely at Hegel’s arguments against skepticism in the Phenomenology of Spirit, I argue that Hegel’s anti-skeptical arguments are in fact major failures. Hegel’s failure is at odds with the emphasis that contemporary literature places on Hegel’s interests in skepticism. For a philosopher who was supposedly centrally concerned with skeptical issues, Hegel sure does not act like it. I conclude that the tension here is the result of contemporary scholars’ overemphasis of the role that skepticism plays in Hegel’s project. -

Doull’s “Neoplatonism and the Origins of the older Modern Philosophy” for Situating Contemporary Freedom: A Doull Reader Introduction: James Doull, Étienne Gilson and George Grant Not many in Canada can be compared to James Doull as the creator of a philosophical school based in an interpretation of the whole history of Western philosophy. When one adds that his school has continued to reproduce itself for a half a century through several generations of students, that it remains central to the life of vibrant institutions, and that this power of regeneration stems from its union of a linguistically and philologically disciplined reading of texts with a total system of philosophy, Professor Doull’s accomplishment is virtually incomparable in our country. Only Étienne Gilson’s creation of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto and George Grant’s unparalleled drawing of an extraordinarily diverse and large group of Canadians into philosophical reflection on their culture and its future come to mind. Doull and Gilson have in common that they unite textual erudition with a philosophical project and that institutions and generations of scholar disciples carried on their work. But in Canada the institutions with which Gilson is associated have failed or their scholarly work has ceased to serve his philosophical and theological enterprise. Moreover, and this is important for the essay of Doull to which I am responding, the texts and Gilson’s interpretative scheme ultimately fall away from one another because of Gilson’s opposition to Neoplatonism.i While the criticism of Neoplatonism unites them, our two philosophical historians separate sharply over its place and character. -

James Doull, Étienne Gilson and George Grant on Modernity and Platonism The Friend 2, 1 (2000), 18-21. During this year two young academics, who teach at the University of King’s College in Halifax and who regard James Doull as their master in philosophy, Neil Robertson and David Peddle, are editing a festschrift in his honour, Situating Contemporary Freedom: A Doull Reader. The reader will be published by the University of Toronto Press and will consist of articles selected from Doull’s publications together with responses from his former students and colleagues. My own contribution to the collection will be a critical consideration of his “Neoplatonism and the Origins of the older Modern Philosophy” and is entitled: “Neoplatonism and Contemporary Constructions and Deconstructions of Modern Subjectivity.” My essay begins with a comparison between James Doull, Étienne Gilson and George Grant on modernity and Platonism. Here, I adapt that introduction for The Friend. James Alexander Doull, the only surviving member of my trio, comes from the same Pictou County Nova Scotia roots as George Grant. He studied at Dalhousie University, the University of Toronto, Harvard and Oxford. Like Grant, after World War 2 and Oxford, Doull taught at Dalhousie University. Grant came as Head (and only member) of the Philosophy Department. Doull was in Classics where he taught for almost 40 years, most of that time as Head (He was briefly Head of Philosophy as well after Grant left for York and McMaster). Both the Classics Department at Dalhousie and King’s College remain strongly under his influence. Not many in Canada can be compared to James Doull as the creator of a philosophical school based in an interpretation of the whole history of Western philosophy. -

This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy School of Philosophy Australian Catholic University Graduate Research Office Locked Bag 4115 Fitzroy, Victoria 3065 1st March 2014 i ABSTRACT This thesis examines the contemporary dispute between philosopher Jean-Luc Marion and theologian John Milbank concerning the relation of God to being and the nature of theological analogy. I argue that Marion and Milbank begin from a shared opposition to Scotist univocity but tend in opposite directions in elaborating their constructive theologies. Marion takes an essentially Dionysian approach, emphasising the divine transcendence “beyond being” to such a degree as to produce an essentially equivocal account of theological analogy. Milbank, on the other hand, inspired particularly by Eckhart, affirms a strong version of the Thomist thesis that God is “being itself” and emphasises divine immanence to such a degree that the analogical distinction between created and uncreated being is virtually collapsed. Both thinkers claim fidelity to the premodern Christian theological tradition, but I show that certain difficulties attend both of their claims. I suggest that the decisive issue between them is the authority which should be granted to Heidegger’s account of being and I argue that it is Milbank’s vision of post-Heideggerian theological method which is to be preferred. I conclude that Marion and Milbank give two impressive contemporary answers to the ancient riddle of “double being” raised in the Anonymous Commentary on Plato’s “Parmenides,” a riddle which queries the relation between absolute First being and derived Second being. -

This article provides a new edition of a passage from Philodemus’ Index Academicorum THE PUPILS OF PHILO (PHerc. 1021, col. XXXIV 6-19), in which pupils of Philo of Larissa are listed. Several OF LARISSA AND new reading allow for a better understanding of the content and rendering of this list, PHILODEMUS’ STAY one of which might even corroborate the hypothesis that Philodemus sojourned in Sicily. IN SICILY (PHERC. 1021, Keywords: Philo of Larissa, Heraclitus of Tyre, Philodemus, Sicily, Historia Academi- COL. XXXIV 6-19) corum Shortly before the end of his Index Academicorum Philodemus informs us about the life of Philo of Larissa (PHerc. 1021, coll. XXXIII f.).1 Notwithstanding KILIAN FLEISCHER its fragmentary state, the passage is highly valuable, since it preserves much otherwise unattested information on Philo and allows us to reconstruct to a certain extent his personal and philosophical development. The passage dealing with Philo ends with a list of pupils that was long thought to include the pupils of Antiochus of Ascalon. Puglia was the first to argue convincingly that the names listed represent pupils of Philo, not of Antiochus.2 In this contribution I will present a new edition of this list (col. Philosophy 5340 – Epistemology Topic 6: Theories of Justification: Foundationalism versus Coherentism Part 3: Foundationalism Versus Foundherentism Introductory Remarks Comparing foundationalism with Susan Haack’s ‘foundherentism’ is a slightly tricky matter. First of all, foundationalism comes in significantly different varieties. In particular, there are some very significant differences between the type of foundationalism associated with indirect realism, and the type of foundationalism that Mike Huemer advances in his defense of direct realism. Secondly, Haack’s account of foundherentism is not as clear and precise at crucial points as it could be. To handle the first problem, I shall compare foundherentism with both types of foundationalism whenever necessary. 1. Is there a Privileged Class of Beliefs that Can Be Non-Inferentially Justified? Foundherentism 1. Haack says that foundherentism does not involve any privileged class of beliefs that can be non-inferentially justified. 2. The reason for this denial is that certain states are part of a person’s experiential S- evidence – namely, one’s present perceptual experiences, introspective awareness of one’s own mental goings-on, and memory traces of one’s earlier perceptual and introspective states – and their being part of one’s experiential S-evidence does not depend upon one’s having any beliefs about those states. Because of this, any propositions that are sufficiently supported by such propositions to be justified will be non-inferentially justified, since there will be no justified beliefs at earlier stages in the causal process that leads to the beliefs in question. Foundationalism – Indirect Realist Version 1. There is a privileged class of beliefs that can be non-inferentially justified. -

I DESIRED TO MAKE HER MY 2 SPOUSE, AND I WAS A LOVER OF HER BEAUTY”, LIBER SAPIENTIAE Robert Crouse dedicated a long and richly productive scholarly life to western intellectual and artistic culture, covering the whole range from the beginnings of Greek and Jewish literature to contemporary philosophy, poetry and theology. By his preaching, teaching, and publishing, by his own work, and by what he nurtured in others, he laboured to rethink the western spiritual heritage and, thus, to rebuild it. For the rebuilding, his prescription was the transformation of minds, and his aim was enabling vision: purified, simple intuition or understanding, the loving intellectus which is the goal of faith. For him the requisite was the hard intellectual work of restoring the union of philosophy with theology. Though eminently effective practically in everything from music to gardening, university administration and pastoral care, the primary service of Robert’s life to the university and the church was intellectual labour, understood Platonically in terms of recollection, not machinations wrought by synods and committees. Robert wrote a memorial for his teacher, friend, fellow Nova Scotian, mediaevalist, and philosophical theologian, ultimately his ecclesiastical and theological opponent, Professor Eugene Rathbone Fairweather of Trinity College, Toronto. There was even more in common between them, including celibacy, the Anglican priesthood, Classical studies, theological doctorates from American universities, careers of university teaching, Anglo-Catholicism, and socialism; indeed, Eugene Fairweather also died at 80, ten years before Robert. -

Auezov South Kazakhstan State University, KAZAKHSTAN Faculty of Pedagogy and Culture, Shymkent Received 8 November 2019 ▪ Revised 17 December 2019 ▪ Accepted 23 December 2019 Abstract Plato’s Academy is undoubtedly the first higher education institution in history, and in ancient Athens itself represents the most important educational institution. It constituted in the context of the universal development that took place in ancient Athens, in the 5th and 4th century BC, and it continued to work until the Byzantine Emperor Justinian forbade the work of all schools of philosophy (529 AD). This development, which is part of the so-called Golden Age of ancient Athens, represents the period of Greek history in which the foundations of Western civilization originated, as we know it today. Plato appears as one of the greatest philosophers of ancient Greece, along with Socrates and Aristotle, to the first of whom appears as a student and to the second as a teacher. Philosophy in the true sense of the word was created in Plato’s era in ancient Athens (Russell, 1975), and Plato’s Academy, in which he, along with his students, talked about various philosophical topics through the Garden of Akademos, was the impetus for this development. There are also opinions that the development of philosophy after Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle is only of reproductive character when it comes to the basics of philosophy. -

Antiochus at the Ruins of the Academy In one of the most evocative introductions to his dialogues, in the last book of De Finibus1, Cicero describes how he and his interlocutors, his brother Quintus, Marcus Piso, T. Pomponius Atticus and Cicero’s cousin Lucius visit the spot of Plato’s Academy, while on a grand educational tour to the Greek world in 79 BC; in stark contrast to the gloomy reality resulting from the Roman siege of the city, which had led to the closure of the philosophical schools (as a consequence of Athens’ involvement in the Mithridatic War), Athens appears there as an idealised space, the birthplace of the greatest politicians, poets, rhetoricians and philosophers, whose scenes of action (although deserted) offer a reminiscence of glory and inspiration for the Roman youth: Phalerum brings to mind the great rhetorician Demosthenes, whereas the, by that time, deserted Academy, makes one remember Cicero’s favourite, Carneades, and the legendary debates he held on that spot many decades before2. As Cicero puts it: Multa in omni parte Athenarum sunt in ipsis locis indicia summorum virorum Cicero, Fin. 5.5 In every quarter of Athens the mere sites contain many mementoes of the most illustrious men. Athens thus appears at the beginning of the first century BC to be on the map as an educational destination, but more as a ‘landscape of memory’, rather than of original intellectual production.
