Significant Events in Church History

Foundational Events ∙ The Creation of the Earth (the footstool of God’s throne–Moses 6:43-44) ★ Jesus Christ – King of all the Earth (“Jehovah most high” is “King over all the earth” Psalm 47:2) ★ Fall of Adam–man becomes subject to the devil (Sept. 1830--D&C 29:40–“Adam transgressed the commandment, wherein be became subject to the will of the devil, because he yielded unto temptation”) ★ Gospel of Jesus Christ given to Adam and Eve (Moses 5:4-11; 6:50-65)–baptismal covenant is where a person subjects him or herself to the will of the Father through Jesus Christ (see 2 Nephi 31:7; Mosiah 18:10; D&C 20:37) ★ Gospel preached to Adam’s posterity–a few accept the majority reject–subjecting themselves to Satan (“the prince of this world”– John 16:11; and “god of this world”–2 Cor. 4:4) ★ All dispensations fail–from the days of Adam until the Apostle Peter have failed– ★ World Apostasy or wide rejection of the fulness of Gospel– Dispensation of the Fulness of Times The goal of this dispensation–Under the direction of Christ God’s children “shall have subdued all enemies under Christ’s feet, and shall have perfected his work”–a kingdom established who have subjected their will to the will of God–will dwell with God as “kings and queens” forever (Rev. 22)

April ∙ 6th – Church of Jesus Christ (the preparatory kingdom) is restored–Gift of the Holy Ghost (mediator of Jesus Christ’s Atonement) is made available for the first time. ∙ D&C 20–basic principles and government of the Church

June ∙ The “new translation” (JST) begins; Moses 1 received ∙ First conference of the church (ratification of D&C 20 as Articles of Covenants—[1] basic doctrines; [2] offices of elder, priest, teacher, and deacon, established including the dutires of each; [3] proper procedures for baptisms;

July ∙ D&C 25 received–Emma called to serve as scribe when needed; Make selection of Sacred Hymns ∙ D&C 26 Law of common given (all are free to “consent” to what leadership has proposed)

August ∙ D&C 27 vss 1-4 Law of Sacrament (it doesn’t matter what “eat” or “drink”)

September ∙ D&C 27:5-18 Though not mentioned by name, first reference to the Meeting of Adam-ondi- Ahman in which “wine” will be used during a sacrament meeting. • Conference of the Church 1. D&C 28—directive accepted by law of common consent (only head of church is to receive revelation for church 2. D&C 28—Lamanite mission announced 3. D&C 28—“city Zion” will be “on the borders by the Lamanites” ∙ Conversion of Thomas B. Marsh (first president of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles) ∙ D&C 29 received—The gathering of Israel commences

October ∙ Commencement of Lamanite Mission (Oliver Cowdery, Parley P. Pratt, Ziba Peterson)

November ∙ Conversion of many in Kirtland, Ohio, including Sidney Rigdon and Edward Partridge. • JST— Moses 6 is received)

December ∙ Sidney Rigdon becomes Joseph Smith’s scribe and confidant (D&C 35) ∙ JST—Moses 7 received (defines what Zion is; panormic vision of Enoch and the world-wide flood of truth and righteousness gathering the elect to Zion; all the righteous dead will return with Jesus Christ and combine with latter-day Zion.) • D&C 37 received—The call to gather to “the Ohio” (D&C 37)

1831 January ∙ Third conference of the Church—D&C 38 given to explain purpose of gathering to Ohio; [1] To avoid the plans of the “enemy” to destroy church; [2] In Ohio, “the law” would be given (the celestial law of consecration, order of Enoch) [3] first principles undergirding law of consecration given [4] the announcement of the Kirtland Endowment of Power from on High empowering church members to take the Gospel to “all nations” of the earth February ∙ Joseph and Emma move to Kirtland ∙ Conversion of Newel K. and Ann Whitney; Joseph and Emma move in with them. • February--“The Law” given (D&C 42)—further principles that undergird law of consecration.

March ∙ D&C 45 given ∙ Joseph Smith received instructions to begin JST of New Testament

May ∙ D&C 49 received—marriage is ordained of God “that [the earth] might be filled with the measure of man, according to his creation before the world was made” (15-16) June • Conference—office of High Priest restored • D&C 55—W. W. Phelps called to assist Oliver Cowdery to begin church publication (beginning of church publication—a major aspect of the Latter-day Zion) • Joseph Smith and others begin their trip to Missouri (where city of Zion is to be located)

July • D&C 57 received in Jackson County—establishment of the “center place” of Zion • D&C 58 received in Jackson County—they are laying the foundation of Zion • D&C 59 received in Jackson County—the new 10 commandments August ∙ August 2nd—Joseph Smith presides as Sidney Rigdon dedicates Jackson County, Missouri as the land of Zion. ∙ August 3rd—Temple site dedicated in Independence

1832 January ∙ January 25th—Sustained as the President of the High Priesthood in Amherst, Ohio February Feb. 16 —D&C 76 (Kingdoms of Glory (graded heaven) revealed) March ∙ Mar 8th— is organized (Joseph Smith, President; Sidney Rigdon as 1st Counselor; Jesses Gause as 2nd Counselor. On March 18, Frederick G. Willliams replaces Jesse Gause) • March 24th—Tar and Feathering of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon April • April— joins the church. December ∙ Dec 25—D&C 87 (latter-day wars to bring an end of all nations) ∙ Dec 27, 28 (and Jan. 3)—receives D&C 88 (church education begins—School of the Prophets; directive given to build a temple in Kirtland) 1833 ∙ Jan—First session of the School of the Prophets begins ∙ Jun 1—D&C 95 (directions given for construction of Kirtland Temple) ∙ Jul—Trouble in Jackson County; press destroyed (Evening and Morning Star and D&C being printed). ∙ Aug 2—DC 94 (Hyrum Smith, Reynolds Cahoon and Jared Carter appointed by revelation as a Church building committee) 1834 ∙ Zion’s Camp

1836 ∙ The Kirtland Endowment of Power (1833-36) –Command and purposes (D&C 37:1; 38:32-38; 39:14-15; 43:16; 105:9-13) –Kirtland School of the Prophets; High School, Elder’s School, etc. (1833, 35-37) –Washings and Anointings (1836) –Dedication of Kirtland Temple (March 27, 1836) – (March 29-30, 1836; History of the Church, Vol. 2:429-433) –Visitation of Jehovah, Moses, Elias, and Elijah–restoration of Temple Keys by which the Royal Family of God can be restored and reinherited (Apr 3, 1836) –Multiple visions given Saints in Kirtland between 1833-1836
