PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the 123rd Annual report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

As I reported to the last AGM our club has undergone a couple of major changes. This season will see all three of our playing blocks on Sydenham Park back in play. In addition we have constructed 28 metres of grass playing blocks for Practice. We were able to trial the blocks at the very end of last season when we hosted teams for the Golden Oldies Competitions held early April, and I can report that participants reported they played" straight and true." It is exciting to look forward to being back on the Park on Saturdays and being able to practice at home with the best facilities in Christchurch.

Whilst the grounds and playing blocks were funded by Council, our club undertook to raise funds for the practice blocks. The total cost was around $50,000 and we were delighted to receive financial support from NZCT and the new Zealand Cricket trust but the bulk of the funding cost ($33000) was met by the Sydenham Cricket Trust. As your President I want to record our clubs heartfelt thanks to the Trustees of this fund, under the Stewardship of David Gallop, for providing these funds for such a fantastic facility we will have from this summer on. Together with the Astro turf all weather practice lanes, (also originally a Sydenham Trust initiative) we do have the best practice facilities of any club in Christchurch.

Secondly we now have Sydenham Youth back in the club fold. We started the calendar year in March with 5 teams and I am very confident that with the work going into recruitment, coaching, and gear and facilities, under Fergus Smith's able leadership, and strong parental involvement, this group will continue to grow in numbers and playing ability. These groups (both Boys and Girls) are the future of our club, and it is hugely pleasing to see this growth and enthusiasm so early in the journey.

We are also very fortunate to have Maria Lankeshwar heavily involved in the development of our game especially with the girls. Not only is Maria an ex White Fern, and top coach, but her dedication, and energy around the club is infectious.

I did want to take this opportunity also to ask our members to look closely at how our club is funded. Each of our own player subscriptions is vitally important income for our club, but these days only provides a fraction of what is needed to "balance our books". I will mention our sponsors specifically later in my report but would like all of our members to understand that for every one of our sponsors is scarce.

Our Charitable trusts are facing real pressure from Government and councils over reducing or curtailing their pokie activities and at the other end of the scale, the demand on funds available for distribution has escalated majorly with organisations outside of traditional sporting clubs placing real pressure on our success to obtain funds. The same applies to our other sponsor funders who have increasing demands on them from the wider community for financial assistance.

We are truly indebted to all our financial supporters without their support we cannot continue to grow the club and our facilities. Air Rescue Services Pub Charities The Southern Trust NZCT Rata Foundation CCC Small Grants Foundation Christchurch Metro Cricket Coaching Grants Cricket Express Mainland Trust New Zealand Cricket Trust Sport Canterbury Lion Foundation

And also a huge thank you to our Commercial Sponsors Banfield's Meats of Beckenham The Birdwood Café Swanndri St Martins New World Hellers

Finally again I must give thanks to our committee. To all of you, my heartfelt thanks for the work you do to make our club tick. It is hard to single out individuals, but guys like Kev Congdon, Doldy, and Andrew Chisnall (especially with Prize giving and the compilation of this annual report) put huge hours into our club and really you can't grow a club without the dedication and commitment.

It is also gratifying to see new committee members come on board as they follow and support their children through our club. Linda Pettigrew, Steve Finnie and Mike Owens have added real impetus to the work that is needed to be done. You guys are our future as we continue to carry on the legacy of our 123 year old cricket club.

Here's to a great 2018/2019 season.

Finally on behalf of your committee, it is my pleasure to present the 123rd Annual report and Financial Statement for your consideration.

Graham Harris President

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Well sadly the season ended the way it started. WET!! Seems to be becoming a habit.

Although no team won their grade this season, we had several teams finished near the top of their respective grades. 2C (2 day) and 3D Cardinals finished second in their grades while several teams finished 3rd in theirs including the Prem Men (2 day), Prem Women (1 day) and Div 1 girls (1 day). Well done to all the other teams for their efforts over the season. As many of you will agree it was a frustrating season with the standard of pitches. At certain grounds around town there was a lack of pitch preparation leading to what can only be described as very sub-standard pitches. We even had on two occasions teams having to take a lawn mower to the ground to mow their pitches before they could play on them. And on another occasion the whole game had to be bowled from one end due to the wet pitch. This shouldn't be happening and we can only but hope that next season we see a vast improvement on the pitches from hopefully a different contractor. But on the upside Sydenham Park should be back in full swing next season. Unfortunately the contractors wouldn't let us use the pitches towards the end of the season but they were used in the first week of April for the Golden Oldies tournament and everyone was more than happy with how they played.

The prize giving had a great turnout from most of the teams and was well supported and ended up with everyone mixing for the usual charades/games. And like past seasons there was a tight race for many of the trophies and it was great to see the trophies spread around many of the teams.

A big thanks to all the captains for their hard work over the season supporting the club, from getting teams on the field, supporting social events, and to ensuring club stats were kept up to date.

Having the youth section back under the club banner is very important for the club to ensure we keep up and coming players. Too many times have we seen youth players disappear when they leave school. This now gives them a clear path into the senior club and the opportunity to play some cricket at this level when no youth cricket available around holiday time. The continued development of the women's section has been exciting to watch with many of the younger players starting to shine and come thru to the higher levels. Again here we have youth women's teams playing under the senior club.

Our club has become very strong over the years in club administration, grounds, coaching and being able to put a large number of teams on the field every week at all levels. And to add I don't think I have seen such a strong committee as we have now. Over recent years it has continued to grow in size and experience and we are now reaping the experience of junior committee members joining our committee. I can't thank the committee for all there efforts over the last season and there willingness to put a hand up and help when needed. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep the club up and running especially with the size of our club.

A special thanks to Maria Lankeshwar for her huge workload and the fantastic job she's doing thru the whole club. Not only is she on our committee but she is looking after the coaching of the junior club, coaching the women's section and on top of that taking on the role of coaching the Canterbury Magicians.

Remember to stay up to date with the club scene on the club website and Facebook.

Have a great winter and look forward to seeing you all back next season.

Andrew Chisnall Men's Club Captain

OBITUARIES

Brendon Laughton

Brendon passed away suddenly on the 5th Feb 2018 at the age of just 46.

An accomplished, gifted sportsman from a young age Brendon through many mutual friends joined the Presidents Cardinals team at Sydenham in 2012. He quickly fitted into the team culture and become a very popular and integral member of the team. His athleticism and prowess in the field saw him pull of some remarkable stops in the field, run outs and numerous catches that would not be out of place in a much higher grade.

He scored 50 or more on 18 occasions, with the undoubted highlight of his 69 game career at Sydenham being his 229# (40 over game) at Elmwood Park- it was an innings to behold and gained international attention online.

A great friend to many Brendon was a pleasure to share company with. Humorous, quick witted and lots a fun his sudden passing shocked us all and was felt not just within the club but also across the entire Presidents grade.

Brendon is survived by wife Leanne, son Logan and daughter Tivoli

As we all know at Sydenham Jim Anderton was our MP for Sydenham. Many of us sought out his advice and support over many years in all sorts of matters. Jim always made time to assist his constituents wherever and whenever he could. His Political career is well documented, but he was also a very accomplished cricketer.

He was an elegant and accomplished batsman but also a cricketer very aware of the finer nuances of the game in matters of field setting, bowling tactics and assessing the game on the field.

Before moving south to Christchurch he was a very accomplished cricketer playing at Hawke Cup level.

During his time at Sydenham, Jim would compile valuable runs in the context of the game and that including many fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties. When in the field Jim would often position himself at mid-on or mid-off, so that he could impart advice to the bowler on how he believed the batsman could be dismissed. He was more often than not correct, such was his ability to read the game and his opposition.

When work commitments allowed he played a number of seasons at Sydenham in both the Presidents A side, and then latterly the B side from 1987 until when finally his political demands meant he had to give the game up in 1997.

Jim loved the game of cricket, and even beyond his playing years Jim kept in contact with his cricket mates, despite his busy parliamentary life.

John (or Jock) O'Cain as he was known joined Sydenham Cricket club way back in the 70's.

He brought a team of guys across from Lane Walker Rudkin and they entered the 9th grade competition. Over the years the team gained and lost players but became a formidable unit, winning the 9th grade competition in 1980-81 winning 17 of their 20 games that season two of them outright.

In later years the team moved into the Presidents grade enjoying the banter and competition which goes on in that grade when past Senior players work out their cricketing retirement.

Jock was a more than useful first change bowler with a wily change of pace and a nagging length. He took many five wicket bags but asked in his latter playing years he always asked if he could bowl into the wind because it was easier to catch his breath!

During his many years at the club his organisation skills were very evident. He was a strong leader in his own team group but also served many years on the club committee and was always available for housie duties or any other tasks that needed doing around the club.

When his playing days were over he took on the premier Men's Manager role when Bob Carter was playing and Captaining the Premier team.

Unfortunately Johns latter years were plagued by ill health and he passed away in October last year.

A great team man, fondly remembered and sadly missed.

The club also records the tragic loss of Klaus Prusas wife Vivienne. passing of John Tuckers wife Bobby. passing of Keith Thomson wife Helen

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements.

PREMIER MEN TEAM REPORT

After two strong years of improvement starting with the 2-day competition victory in 2015/16, and the T20 victory last season, it would be fair to say from the lack of silverware this season that the Prems had a sideways year but earned a tentative pass mark. We finished a creditable 3rd in the 2-day competition which wasn’t assisted by the rained out match against the bottom placed team, and the 3rd placing in the T20 competition where we won four out of five matches to show that we remain very competitive in that form of the game. However, strangely we again performed poorly in the 1-dayers finishing 6th out of eight teams.

There were some very good performers within the squad, and inevitably some that will be disappointed and determined to do better next season. Our young Englishman Tom Hewison fitted very well into the Sydenham set up and had a very good season in his first season overseas scoring 640 runs at 29 and adding some solidity to the No. 3 & 4 positions. We are delighted to see Ryan Wallace now looking to set his roots down in NZ and he also had an excellent season – Ryan’s 534 runs at 28 were more than backed up by his 30 wickets to make him arguably the best all rounder in the city and thoroughly deserving his call up in the Canterbury A side.

Finn Loader was another who really had a comeback season averaging 34 and playing some intelligent innings that dragged his team out of trouble on more than one occasion, and principally lead to some victories. Where the batting really struggled was in the opening combinations where the opening partnerships in 2-day competition lasted less than three over's on average and consequently exposed the next batsmen too early to the new ball. This an area that we now have options to correct, along with the middle order and tail that were also lacking in runs.

The bowling was dominated by the four faster bowlers in two Gardner brothers, Ryan Wallace and Tom Agnew. Mitch led with 39 wickets, with Braden only 7 behind that on 32. Where the bowling struggled was with the slow bowling options and Chris Harris’ absence in that regard was sorely missed. The other encouraging aspect was the performance of young Carl Hooper in his first full season who made excellent use of his opportunities at the crease – indeed, although suffering an injury that restricted his over's in the season, his stats were proportionately very similar to the top performer in the side in Mitch Gardner. With young Will Graham also promising in the wings with his short exposure to Prem cricket in his first season, the young bowling stocks in the club look talented.

There seems little doubt the loss of Sydenham Park did not assist consistently of performance – with its lack of dressing sheds and shelter, Hagley Park each week isn’t a venue that can ever feel like home.

So next season’s return to what will be arguably the best facilities and wickets in Christchurch once they settle down, coupled with Harry being fit and ready from his stint from “Dancing with the Stars”, should give the Prems a great opportunity to progress further on our journey.

Practices at Lincoln start at 7.30pm at Lincoln on Monday 30th July and we look forward to another exciting and productive season.

Over the Easter week we hosted 10 Golden Oldies games at the SCG on the new wickets that some players acknowledged as some of the better wickets our visitors played on in the tournament. Also the tournament enabled the club to raise significant and much need funding towards our new practice wicket block and I would like to thank the various Prems players who helped out or put in appearances, notably Ryan Wallace, Chad Bowes and especially Tom Agnew.

Mike Dolden, Manager

The Premier Women had a pretty strong second half to the season narrowly missing a spot in the T20 final. Overall the team finished third across the 3 formats of One Day/T20/Kirsty Bond Series.

Posting nine wins through the season across all formats, our team will look to keep building on this, and continue to be even more consistent in performances.

There were some standout individual and team performances, with our overseas player Evelyn Jones notching up a fine unbeaten century vs OBC of 123 not out. Bernadine Bezuidenhout was second highest run scorer in the One Day competition with 322 runs, and our Captain Carolyn Esterhuizen was the leading wicket taker in the One Day competition with 21 wickets.

There were a couple of outstanding games from the girls, comprehensively beating a full strength Saints Albans team, with their three White Ferns back. Then followed that effort up in the last match of season defending 100 runs to beat LPW, which was a great way to finish the season. The girls are really looking forward to making the most of the new training and playing facilities at Sydenham this upcoming season.

Lastly we would like to thank you so much for the unbelievable support and encouragement within the club for the Women. With many committee members and supporters regularly coming to our games to support us. Really appreciated by the team, and fantastic to see. Thank you!

Maria Lankeshwar Coach

The Sydenham Premier Women’s team had mixed results throughout the 2017-2018 season but despite this roller coaster; they still managed to defeat every team in the competition during the season.

The team clearly has the tools to succeed, however; in this coming 2018-2019 season, they are planning to work on bringing consistency to their game. Overall; as a unit, the team has been consistently improving and is working towards developing depth in the middle order and consistency with the ball.

A highly significant highlight to the season was convincingly defeating LPW who went on to win both the 50 over and T20 formats of the competition. During this game, the Sydenham Premier Women showed more character and fight than they had ever revealed before. In the 2018-2019 season, this highly competitive and unyielding attitude is looked to be carried on.

The established youth members of the team are now taking more responsibility and new players such as Alana Topping, Jodie Dean and Rosie Pentecost all coming through from Sydenham’s youth ranks contributing with bat and ball. It is exciting to see the up and coming generation take on strong roles within the team. Eve Jones, our overseas player from the UK, was a valuable addition to the team as she contributed both on and off the field to the team. Eve and Bernadine Bezuidenhout both ended in the top four run scorers in the one-day competition. Team captain, Carolyn Esterhuizen, ended the season as the highest wicket taker and Metro Cricket’s women’s club player of the year.

Recently, Bernadine joined the White ferns and has been representing New Zealand on a tour v England and Ireland. Her experience gained from such a tour will greatly benefit the Sydenham club as she will be able to give great insight into the direction women’s cricket is taking overseas.

Moving forward as a squad the Sydenham Women’s team is gaining a deeper understanding the importance of consistency in the game of cricket. As a team, they are gaining strength in their belief in individual performances and stringing these together in support of team success.

We would like to thank the club and committee for all the support and work.

2A GRADE TEAM REPORT

Sydenham 2A’s had a difficult season in 2017/18 with unavailability’s and players leaving the club it made it difficult to name a set 11 on a regular basis.

Personally I want to thank Scott Grose and Martin Crook for the outstanding efforts helping the side have 11 on the paddock which often ended in lower grades losing players.

Our season as much as results wise it looked a disaster with finishing bottom or the 2day and one day competitions we did show promise in games when could string a talented side together.

Apart from the negativity of the results Sydenham 2A’s showed plenty of excellent individual performances Hayden Day having an excellent all round season with 369 runs and 17 wickets proved to be the go to man with bat and ball and was rightfully voted 2a’s player of the season, PK recorded a excellent season with the bat scoring 431 runs whilst Mr reliable Scott Grose lead from the front with 40 wickets for the season proving how important he is to the side.

Amongst the performances Young Charlie Finnie had a good first season in 2A’s proving he is well up to the level required taking 19 wickets in his maiden season of 2a’s proved how much talent we have upcoming in the junior system.

A pleasing sign as a captain is that from the squad we had at the start of the season 10 of the 2A’s Squad over the season featured in the Premier side throughout the season which showed the depth in the club to push for places and with the junior system expanding I can quite easily see this Sydenham side bouncing back to promotion next season and be a force to be reckoned with in upcoming seasons.

Finally with a bit of consistency with a playing 11 along with hard work the side will be in a good position and be back where it belongs. Personally want to thank the club and squads from all sides in helping with a tough season.

2C GRADE TEAM REPORT – SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

The 2017/18 season was a tough one for the 2C side. First few games were called off due to weather and then when the weather was right, we struggled for numbers. Having quite a few players going up to the 2A side made life difficult for the team and we were able to get a full team most weeks, but we didn’t get the results we were wanting. Unfortunately, we came last in the One Day competition and in the T20 competition.

Once 2018 rolled round, we were able to keep the main core of our team together and we were able to get some results we wanted and had a very good shot at winning the two-day competition, but the odds were against us. With the rained out last day of the season, it never happened but the team held their heads high after the effort we put in.

We had some great performances with bat and ball with Mike’s best bowling figures of 6 for 22 and myself getting the high score with the bat of 72.

With promotion/relegation coming in this season, we are going to have to work harder than we have and hopefully continue where we left off from last season and try and get promoted into the Div 1 grade.

The 2017/18 season was a tough one for the Goats finishing 6th in the grade after making the playoffs the season before. Losing 6 players from last years team led to a major rebuild at the start of the season and unfortunately the results didn't come as hoped.

Our bowling attack was very consistent with all of the 5 primary bowlers getting 15+ wickets at an average less than 17 and an RPO less than 4. Our 3 quicks, Chris, Jonny and Alex gave us a good new ball attack and Jon and Ollie were able to keep things tight especially on the slow tracks of Centennial Park. As such the highest score any opposition scored against us was 172 which meant we were always in the game.

However our batting was a whole different story. We struggled for runs all year and even when our attack had put us in a winning position we often couldn't get the job done. This was summed up by the game against Southern Districts who finished second in the competition when we bowled them out for 63 on a reasonable track and we couldn't get the target. Only two players scored over 200 runs all season. Tony Dannenberg was the rock at the top of the order batting long periods of time as wickets tended to tumble around him and Ollie played some great knocks in the lower middle order highlighted by his match winning 72no batting at number 7 vs Heathcote after we were 25/5. Unfortunately Rob Graves couldn't play that many games which would have strengthened our top order.

Our fielding was a mixed bag. Outstanding slip fielding by Tony and Rob and Chris Douglas raced around the outfield like a greyhound was balanced by the dropping of some simple catches costing us winning opportunities.

Ollie Philpott was a deserving winner of the Goats player of the year and also won the award for the best all rounder in the club below seniors.

Even though it was a tough year without a lot of wins the team always played in a good spirit and enjoyed a and a debrief after the game. Thanks to Mohammad for the BBQ at Burnside park, I've never seen so much spiced Indian chicken on a BBQ and it was fantastic.

Hopefully we see everyone back next year on the new Sydenham Park

3D TEAM REPORT – CARDINALS

The 2017/18 season report

The Cardinals brand of BBQ-infused cricket went another round in 2017/18. This season as defending champions, we were buoyed by the return of a Cardinals O.G in Chris Kilkelly. With the team being renowned as a change of pace for ex-Seniors, Chris Cooper also joined the ranks during the winter.

Batting Off to a winning start courtesy of a first-up century by Kieran Williams, this was the first hundred by a Cardinal in quite some time and the beautifully paced innings had set the bar high. The theme with the bat for much of the season was highlights-worthy performances getting us over the line: Cam Rennell looked odds on for a ton of his own early on, Chris Cooper bludgeoned 50 off 4 overs to win a game, Lewis Allen and Cam Rennell are the stuff of nightmares for one young MPap bowler, and the Cam-Geordie combo massacred the entire OBC attack to the tune of 120odd in 10 overs. Old foe New Brighton had us shot twice, had it not been first time up saved by a rearguard from Adrian Patchett at #11, then next time Old Cookie and New Cookie combined to form Cookie Time - the celebrations will forever be in a Panhead-smelling stain on Jamie Livingstone's carpet.

The great performances kept flowing, but not all were capped off with a 'W'. James Stokes scored one of his 50s trying to salvage a hopeless position like he always does so well. Perhaps the gutsiest knock of the season was by Geordie. Top of the table clash, 30+ degrees, bowlers giving nothing away and guys at the other end dropping like flies, opener Geordie fought to 67 and received a big applause from both teams when he was eventually dismissed in the final overs of the first innings.

Getting old As a subplot to all of this was the horrendous injury toll which had ripped through the squad. Amongst others, incumbent chatterbox James Gallagher was struck down for the season in the very first game, Chris Kilkelly's return lasted 2 games, Geordie fielded for the second season in a row without a throwing arm, even Ben Larter managed to have a disagreement with the terrain at the Adventure Park track...the list went on. Unavailability of many players throughout the year saw another big squad used, the peak of the crisis saw a 'Cardinals' team later in the season that more resembled a Goats XI.

Bowling With an often undermanned bowling attack, a couple of old veterans wound back the clock to their all rounder days. When Jamie Livingstone could get on the park, he was chewing through wickets for fun. 5for in the first game, another one later against the eventual champions. But highlight of the season was his hattrick against New Brighton in a low scoring thriller. Well done Livo! Not to be outdone, Kieran Williams did the demolition work as well, with season best performance of 6-24 derailing a chase that was flying at 80-1 when he came on. Also in the bowling honours with 5fors were debutant Eugene Hawyn and James Gallagher.

Season summary Over the years the Cardinals had always been a team that enjoys great depth, but season 2017/18 saw that depth tested as some of the part-timers slipped into the wilderness. Those in charge did well to get 11 on the field each week and we sat in 2nd place on the table pretty much all season. With the final rounds approaching we were in the hunt for top spot. Disappointingly, a couple of teams had their calculators out in the late rounds, showing their true colours in clutch moments of key games. Those important fixtures went against us, which probably soured the attitude of the boys for the final few weeks. The entire squad had a bit of fire in the belly for a much-anticipated grand final, but that was doused by the weather and we had to accept 2nd place. Overall though, another season to look back on with a reasonable amount of satisfaction.

The rest With any Cardinals season there are always a few efforts which don't make the usual honours rolls. Having England all-rounder Ben Stokes along to cheer on the team was something you don't expect playing park-grade cricket! Chris Cooper and Nick Smithson were the newest names added to the Ronnie memorial wall. Lively/pointless debate went on for weeks about whether pre-cooked duck supplied for the BBQ violated the sacred 'no pre-cooked' rule, and exactly how does someone bust an ankle so badly while simply fetching a ball from beyond the boundary. Fielding-wise, Cam Rennell was faultless with the gloves taking his fair share of great catches and scooped up the MVP award on prizegiving night, well done Camo. But there would be no arguments for catch of the season...

Making his Cardinals debut and posted (tactically) at deep midwicket was Richard Hemingway when a full toss was pumped his way. Running to his left, and jumping up with one hand, the ball was past him when he took the catch. He stuck the landing too, staying inside the rope to cap off an effort that would feature on any fielding highlights reel.

As always we would like to thank our sponsors Canterbury Glass and Armadillos Ale House. The Cardinals are kept in finery by the folk at Maximus Apparel. Another season, another huge effort by team manager Jamie Livingstone. And of course many thanks to the wives, partners and families who suffer through our love of the game. A new generation of Cardinals are set to appear this season 2018/19, bring it on.

The Sydenham Allstars returned for another season, with the majority of the 2016-17 players returning. With the help of Sydenham Cricket, we were able to recruit more players and we could confidently field eleven players each week. The team welcomed the return of all-rounder Ben Potter, who returned to Christchurch from Whangarei.

The season was not full of victories, however, players turned up each week to give it ago and to improve from week to week. The team was not short of run scorers or wicket takers, yet the knockout punch evaded us.

Some key highlights for the season; * Christopher Reeve and Paul Jensen helped keep the Sydenham Allstars in the game through their excellent wicket keeping. They allowed very few byes and provided excellent leadership from behind the stump. They took 16 catches and 2 stumpings in the season (Paul 9c, 2s and Chris 7c) * Ben Potter provided the highlight with the bat scoring a masterful 77. Although he was not happy with his season performance, Ben was a game changer and provided the team with confidence at the top of the order. Abraham Atherton, Paul Jensen and Vishal Makwana contributed with scores in the 40s and high 30s. The team has a good foundation, however, all players will need to consistently contribute to chase victories. * Gourav Saini was a fantastic bowler. He was able to swing the ball and made it difficult for players to score freely. Gourav had a strong first half of the season before work commitments and injury limited his play. Gourav's claimed 16 wickets at 11.2. * Hamish McClelland opened the bowling many times this season as his line and length became difficult for players to get away. He was masterful with a swinging ball and captured a best of 4 for 20. Although he was unlucky with players knocking him for a few boundaries each game, his 4.1 runs per over did not reflect the control he had on the run scoring. * Hamish McClelland, Satvik Saini, Mark Flowerday, Cameron Hatcher and Abraham Atherton were the main bowlers throughout the season. They captured many wickets throughout the season, however, the poor fielding made it difficult to obtain victories. * Ben Potter became the team's dominant spinner. Sorry, Paul Jensen. * Satvik Saini and Abraham Atherton claimed brilliant hattricks. * Abraham Atherton claims five-wicket haul: 7-20 including a hattrick. * Mark Flowerday bowled very well in the season and was unlucky not to capture many more wickets. His speed and length troubled top order batsmen.

Although the team did not dominate in the season, there was much to be celebrated and if we can look to be consistent with our batting, bowling and fielding, we will be able to have more victories.

The Sydenham Allstars would like to thank the Sydenham Cricket Executive for all their organization and thorough communication with all teams in the club. We would like to also thank Andrew Chisnall for his commitment to finding players for our team and his communication and support of the team throughout the season.

Kind regards, Abraham Atherton and Cameron Hatcher

CAVALIARS T20 TEAM REPORT - TAMILXI

This was our first season with club cricket. It was the efforts of Bob who brought together all the friends and formed this cricket team. His efforts in forming up the team and enrolling us with the Sydenham club especially at the mid of the season is greatly appreciated. He has done a lot for this team behind the scenes.

As with any team starting new and with few players having a run with hard cricket ball for the first time, we did manage to have an enjoyable season. In spite of the losses the guys turned up with high spirit for every game and kept up the energy in the team. There were a few games where we went very close but could not make it till the end. Game against Burnside believers went down to the wire until the last over and turned out in the opponents’ favour. The game against Old boys collegians also went till the last.

David was our team’s top performer with both bat and the ball, and a special mention to his fielding. Mukesh and John did display some good all-round performance in all matches. John kept the communications up and running amongst the team. Ravi showed some great skills behind the stumps and saved us a lot of runs, and also was one of our key batsman. He was also the person who initiated the formation of this team. Harish opened most of the innings and gave some good resistance at the top, especially against the top teams against whom we struggled a lot. Xavier gave some good resistance to the opponents bowling whenever there was a free fall of wickets. As a part time bowler, he took a wicket the very first ball he bowled, maybe the first wicket in his life!! Raman used to open the bowling and had a decent run in all the matches. He was the person behind our team’s jerseys. Yogi bhai kept the energy of the team high both on field and off field with his charisma along with Navin and Raghu. Practices used to be real fun with these guys around. Navin had a few displays with the bat and was a good fielder. Gowtham was also an allrounder, who gave some hopes at the end in the match against the old boys. A potential spinner whom we are expecting to capitalise on in the next season. Thanks to Fenix and Viknesh for playing for us when we were short of players and Kumar for his sessions at the nets. Fenix did a great job as one of the best fielders of the team. Being the first season, we had a lot to learn, and we did learn from each and every match. Keeping the stats apart we did enjoy the cricket which is more important. Looking forward for an exciting new season ahead.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT – CARDINALS

The Presidents Cardinals season began with the usual ambition of performing well, but we struggled for numbers early with consequent difficulty fielding competitive sides in key matches. Selection was often the easy task of simply naming the eleven players available and hoping for a satisfactory mix of batsmen and bowlers.

As always, the statistics tell the story – only eight 50s scored, with three players – Phil Walker, Matthew Loose and Mario Williams – scoring 49 percent of the team’s runs for the season. Warren Guy took the only five wicket bag in the first match of the season.

The poor quality of pitches was a constant issue throughout the season and impacted greatly on players’ enjoyment of their cricket. A narrow loss to top-placed Merivale- Papanui on a sponge-like Centennial Park deck having scored only 58 late in the season with MP’s last pair needing 20 to win was probably the season highlight.

The tragic loss of Brendon Laughton in February put a sombre note over the season, before a large number of the squad participated in the Golden Oldies tournament held in Christchurch just after Easter, enjoying being back on a renovated Sydenham Park and a quality Sydenham 1 pitch for three games against visiting Australian sides, achieving a two win, one loss record in what was a very fun event.

The team celebrated its season in the usual fashion with a well-attended team dinner in April, making the following awards: · Player of Year - Phil Walker · The B.M. Laughton Memorial Cup for the Players Player of the year - Mario Williams · The Brendon Laughton Batsman of the Year - Matt Loose · Innings of the Year - Matt Loose · Bowler of the Year - Dave Fleming · Bowling Spell of the Year - Warren Guy · Catch of the Year - Mario Williams

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT – HOSPITAL

To say that season 2017-18 was one of marked improvement world be a fairly monumental understatement. For the previous few seasons, the team had really struggled not just on the field of play but going back three years or so even fielding a team was challenging. Indeed the very future of the team was in doubt at one stage.

This is why it is a pleasure and a privilege to put these words to paper. After four winless seasons, we finally got the proverbial monkey off our back. Things were looking up before the season even started, with some very astute recruitment by new team Captain Eugene Hawyn, giving the team a solid balance. Newcomer (and subsequent player of the year) Richard McKinlay certainly provided a boost to our batting ranks.

The season was one of the worst in recent years in terms of weather, and so it proved on the opening weekend where the whole grade was rained off. Ironically we were due to play at Burnside that day and their pits was playable. So instead of a competitive league match, we played a 35 over friendly which we went on to win. What a positive way to begin the year – even if there were no points at stake!

The first competitive match vs the top Merivale Papanui team may have been a defeat, but the highly competitive nature of the match and the relatively close score certainly raised a few eyebrows among the MP team, and they were very gracious to acknowledge this after the match. The following week we faced the other MP team and gained our first competitive win in over 4 years, our opponents unable to chase down our total of 253-8 off the 40 overs.

This kind of set the pattern for the season with a mixed bag of wins and losses. But after 4 years of struggle it’s a good feeling to report there were more highs than lows. Best results had to be, firstly the win against Hornby at Denton Park a relatively low scoring affair that had (as would put it) more twists and turns than a twisty-turny thing, and secondly, the victory over St Albans in our last outing of the season. This latter win was particularly sweet as not only was it pleasing to defeat one of the strongest teams in the league, but it atoned for our only really heavy defeat at by the same opponents earlier in the season.

The highs? Some outstanding individual performances by the aforementioned Richard, ably supported by Bruce Day and Abhaya Paudel with the bat and by Skipper Eugene, & Kelum Mendis with the ball not to mention the gloves of Rex Venning, in fact it must be said that everyone in the team ‘did their bit’ for the cause and it is a pity I cannot list them all here. But more significant than that was the respect gained from our opponents over the season. No longer are the Hospital Team the whipping boys of the grade. The lows? Nah, we left those behind in previous seasons.

And finally…. As mentioned above Eugene Hawyn was appointed the captain for last season. This meant a step back into the ranks for our previous captain Jim Boyd. I would be churlish not to put a few words of appreciation and recognition for the hard work put in by Jim over the past few years. It’s no exaggeration to say that if it were not for Jim’s drive and enthusiasm, there was a real danger that the team would fold. While we were unable to deliver Jim that elusive win under his stewardship, he most definitely laid the foundation for the solid position the team finds itself in presently, and for that we are all truly thankful Jim.

SYDENHAM WOMEN

Our Women’s section had a lot to celebrate in the 2017/18 season. We saw contributions from our players in all areas of cricket - playing, umpiring and coaching.

Bernadine Bezuidenhout had her consistent hard work rewarded with the highest representative honour. Bernie was selected for the White Ferns for the recent Northern tour where she had a record breaking debut taking 5 dismissals.

Three Sydenham players were selected for representation at regional open level. Eve Jones, our overseas player, represented Canterbury and Carolyn Esterhuizen and Bernie represented Northern Districts in the domestic women’s competition.

Jodie Dean was selected to play in the Canterbury under 21 team in the national competition in Auckland. Her team were equal runner up to Central Districts.

Nine of our women players played in the Future Magicians tournament for secondary school women. This was won by Metro Red with Sydenham players Eden Pettigrew and Jodie and coached by Eve. Jenna Waghorn, Alana Topping, Sydnee Edwards, Caitlyn Robertson, Rachel Pullen and Rosie Pentecost also played in this tournament.

The other representative tournament for women is the Junior Magician tournament held before Christmas. This tournament saw a stand out performance for Alana Topping who scored her first century with 102 runs. The event was won by the Metro Red with Sydenham players Harriet Fletcher, Jaimee Cartwright, Sydnee Edwards, Alana and Boadicea and coached by Eden. Rosie also played in this tournament.

Sydenham women have a high number of level 1 and level 2 umpires. Over the 2017/18 season Rosie, Jaimee, Meg, Kate and Harriet umpired in CJCA tournaments. Rosie had the extra honour of umpiring in the National Primary School Cup and Shield.

Our developing coaches for the season were lead by Maria Lankeshwar. Maria was appointed coach of the Canterbury Magicians and we are fortunate for her to share her expertise and experience with us. Meg, Kate, Jenna and Eden assisted Maria in delivery of the Superstars programme for our junior club. Eden is completing her Level 1 Coaching qualification. Congratulations to all our players, coaches and umpires who were listed above and to those who reached personal milestones over the season.

Many thanks to all the players, parents, coaches and supporters who help build the women’s game with their unwavering support throughout the season.

We look forward to building on our already strong base of players, coaches and umpires over the 2018/19 season.

WOMEN’S DIV 1 TEAM REPORT

We are a true mixed ability team with players who are just beginning their cricket journey and players who have returned to cricket after a break.

We had an enjoyable season playing teams of similar ability. Unfortunately we finished in third position in each of the T20 women competitions with many close games and some upsets along the way.

The highlight of our season was seeing our new player Caitlin Banbury (11) who had never played cricket before develop into an accurate bowler.

Thank you to our youth team players (Boadicea Lynch, Jaimee Cartwright, Georgia Cartwright and Ritika Ratuela) who made themselves available to play in the weeks we were short.

WOMEN’S DIV 2 TEAM REPORT

This season we welcomed a youth women team from the junior club. This was part of metro cricket’s plan to grow youth women participation and re-introduce an age restricted grade for women. These players have grown together as a team over the past three years as part of this initiative.

We had a mixed season, finishing in the bottom half of the results table. There were some resounding defeats and some very close games but we maintained positive attitudes to practices and games throughout the season.

Thank you to Sydenham Junior Cricket Club for use of their prem playing shirts and for providing kit for the 2017/18 season. We appreciate your continued support.

THE NEXT GENERATION - SYDENHAM YOUTH

Unlike the Senior club, the Youth playing calendar aligns with the school year, so the Youth teams are only half way through their season. We entered 5 teams this year across various youth grades in term 1.

Team Performances The First XI were promoted to section 2 of the Metro First XI Bowl grade this year and finished a highly credible 3rd in the two-day competition finishing only 1.5 points behind the grade winners, who they had beaten in the first game of the season. The washout of the last day in March potentially cost them the grade win which was very unfortunate. In Term 4 they will move to coloured clothing and play a one day 50 over format.

The Year 10 team, when able to field a full team, were very competitive in their grade and came across varying calibres of opposition in their Saturday afternoon games. The season highlight to date was a 199 run partnership in their last game which saw them chase down 232 in only 26 overs.

We were fortunate to have a large influx of Year 9 players into the club this year. They commenced their season with a well-run 3 day camp in mid January and as registrations continued to grow we were able to enter 3 teams in the Year 9 grades, one in each division. The 9A team topped their highly competitive one day competition only losing one match. The 9A’s will play a two day format in term 4. The 9b Red team sit 2nd equal having won 4 out of 6 games and the 9B Blue team sit 1st equal having won 6 out of 6 matches. There have been some standout performances across all 3 Year 9 teams and we look forward to the players reconvening their season in October.

With Sydenham Park being unavailable due to its upgrade being undertaken, the Youth teams practiced predominantly at Cashmere High School in term 1. The Club has developed a very good working relationship with the school and appreciate the support they provide in allowing us to use their facilities.

We see this relationship as a win-win for all parties as we are able to provide the school with coaching support for their school team as well as being able to organise a renovation of their grass wicket at the end of March. The club has also arranged for the installation of a new artificial matting to be installed in one of their outdoor nets. Overtime we hope to be able to replicate this type of arrangement with other schools in our catchment.

Fergus Smith Convenor SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB

The Junior club which currently has 37 teams had an outstanding season with many outstanding team and individual performances. We accredit the success to our professionally run hardball clinics and our volunteer coaches.

This season we employed Maria Lankeshwar as our of Coaching, ex New Zealand White Fern and internationally accredited coach. Maria has been a wonderful asset to our team, running our Superstar academy, hardball clinics and providing that necessary resource for our volunteer coaches. Maria has also been instrumental in assisting Canterbury Cricket with helping to model a successful pathway journey for our female cricketers. Maria was successful at being given the Head Coaching role for Canterbury Magicians and the Head Coach for New Zealand Women’s A team, both highly acclaimed roles and we are so fortunate that our club, is benefitting from Maria’s expertise and professional skills.

This season we employed Stuart Naden and Eden Pettigrew to assist Maria with her coaching duties. Stuart provided assistance at our hardball clinics, whilst Eden assisted at our Superstar Academy. It has been wonderful having both Eden and Stuart join the team, as they are both continuing their journey to becoming fully qualified professional cricket coaches, which will be of great benefit to our Sydenham Cricket Club community.

One of our main focuses as a club was to continue to grow girls this season. We again entered 3 teams in the competitions, but we had a number of new girls join the club, which increased numbers in each team. A huge thank you to Kay Male, Maria Lankeshwar, Andrew Mckenzie, Carl Phiskie and David Potter for the enormous amount of work they put in to achieving our objective.

This season we celebrated our premier teams, with baggy caps and these were presented at a ceremony which was attended by Stephen Fleming, Jennifer Logan (Turner) and Chris Harris. We also have had Nicky Turner and Blair Hartland involved in the club. Just so wonderful to have these great cricketers a part of our Sydenham community and so wonderful to see our players looking so professional in their new baggys. Thank you to Kerry Constable for playing an enormous role in organising this for the club and also for organising our brand new coaching uniforms.

Good luck to everyone in their winter codes.
