The reasons for considering the use of a promotional stunt have a great potential for a return to investment and the “earnings” from unpaid advertisements in the media which spontaneo- usly reported that something interesting had happened. Apart from the media themselves, the general public also significantly contributes to the spread of publicity through stunts, so that today practically everyone can record the interesting thing they come across via their smartphone and share it on the Internet. Higher education, but also general edu- cation, has transformed from a traditional centuries-old approach where the focus was on teachers and institutions to a modern mass approach where the focus is on students and studying occurs through partnership and cooperation within the learning process. The emergence of mass higher education in almost all countries of the world now implies public criticism of factors such as: the quality of lifelong learning services, the success of exami- nations, the management of the institution, the form of funding and the student standard. -

® Public Relations Statement Why public relations is important to the NA member he Narcotics Anonymous message is “that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.” TOur relations with the public enable us to share this message broadly so that those who might benefit from our program of recovery can find us. We perform public relations service to increase the awareness and credibility of the NA program. We share our message openly with the public at large, with prospective members, and with professionals. Maintaining an open, attractive attitude in these efforts helps us to create and improve relationships with those outside the fellowship. Establishing and maintaining a commitment to these relationships, can help us to further our primary purpose. The spiritual principles of our steps, traditions, and concepts guide us in pursuing our public relations aims and our efforts to enhance NA’s public image and reputation. These principles apply to our community and service efforts as well as to the personal behavior and attitude of individual NA members. Informing professionals and the public The following statement can be used to inform the public about NA: arcotics Anonymous is a global, community-based organization with a multi-lingual and multicultural membership. NA was founded in 1953, N and our membership growth was minimal during our initial twenty years as an organization. Since the publication of our Basic Text in 1983, the number of members and meetings has increased dramatically. Today1, NA members hold nearly 67,000 meetings weekly in 139 countries. -

The inquiry explores the group’s practices of public relations in order to understand how they and other stakeholders co-constructed meanings concerning social justice at the time. The semi-structured interviews with former group members, public relations practitioners in their own right, as well as select work product (e.g. press releases) and internal documents are analyzed through the circuit of culture (Du Gay, et al., 2013). A theory stemming from Cultural Studies, the circuit of culture framework affords sharper understandings of power relations and processes of making meaning—of which public relations is a part. The case study data reveal at least six findings related to four themes concerning governance, professional and amateur practices, social media usage, and diversity of representation. -

Driessen Faculty Sponsor: Scott Dickmeyer, Department of Communication Studies ABSTRACT Advertising is a frequently used influential and persuasive means of communication, especially on teens and young adults. Abercrombie and Fitch is a corporation whose advertising methods have been controversial because of the profound effect its message has on the target audience of teens and young adults. Research found Abercrombie and Fitch used its new campaign to communicate four prevalent messages: The look of an Abercrombie & Fitch Person, The one and only Abercrombie & Fitch, The Abercrombie & Fitch life of luxury, and Not making the Abercrombie & Fitch cut. These messages were communicated through numerous venues, and persuaded consumers to purchase the products through identification with the Abercrombie & Fitch image. Keywords: content analysis, message communication, Abercrombie & Fitch, identification INTRODUCTION Less than one year ago Abercrombie & Fitch decided to remove its main form of advertising, the magalog A&F Quarterly, from the market. The controversy created around this company’s advertising is intriguing. The way a company communicates its image to consumers is an interesting method of message communication. Image by itself is “multidimensional constructs containing cognitive and emotional elements” (p. 86). Corporate image also includes “the extent to which each marketing instrument contributes to the brand image and the extent to which that image enhances desired economic behavior of markets” (p.83). Additionally it encompasses “the quality of management, corporate leadership, and employee orientation” (Haedrich, 1993, p.83). This research study will examine the messages communicated to sell the Abercrombie and Fitch image, this will be done by analyzing the messages sent through Abercrombie & Fitch’s advertising and how these messages are packaged. -

The Ministry of Truth — which dictates news, entertainment, education, and the arts — uses large, ubiquitous two-way telescreens to broadcast propaganda and monitor citizens’ activities. Orwell’s dystopian vision achieved iconic literary and political status, although its dire predictions proved exaggerated . or possibly premature.2 While leaks of the National Security Administration’s (“NSA”) clandestine PRISM mass electronic data mining program have dominated headlines and reignited sales of Nineteen Eighty-Four,3 a more gradual, but possibly comparably significant, shift in information * Copyright © 2014 Peter S. Public Relations Unit 1: Evolution: Defining and Understanding Public Relations Grade Level: 11-12 Timeframe: 5-10 days Unit Overview: The need for clear, concise, and appropriate communications by institutions in the public, private, and the not-for- profit sector is never ending. In the fast-paced digital age that we live in, good public relations is the key for gaining and maintaining public confidence. In this course, through five units of study, students will come to know the practice of public relations through the use of timely case studies, interviews, news photos, and other techniques. Students will come to understand that proper public relations practice must be underpinned by a strong sense of ethics. Students will also hone their writing skills to master the fundamentals of public relations writing as well as the proper requisites for writing for the Internet and social media. The material covered in Unit 1 will familiarize students to the concept of public relations and encourage them to make active and relevant connections in their own lives. Enduring Understanding/ Essential Questions • The practice of public relations is a valuable and powerful societal force in the 21st century. • The principle of “doing the right thing” is what should distinguish the utilization of public relations. • As important as social media has become to public relations work, the field still depends on technical skill, experience, and judgment, all grounded in solid relationships with colleagues, constituents, and media. • Public relations practice confronts an ever-changing landscape of problems and opportunities. • The public relations field is a personal relationship-oriented practice, demanding experienced judgment and finely-honed interpersonal skills.
