Benes Responsible for Loss of Pre-WWII Czech Gold in London
Benes Responsible for Loss of pre-WWII Czech Gold in London Gold not stolen but used by Benes for the Czechoslovak Resistance Army It looks to me from the two documents below that president Benes used the Czech Gold as collateral for a loan from Great Britain for Czechoslovak military operations in the U.K. The article from the U.K. is exactly the opposite to what Jan Kuklik writes in his chapter on p. 188 below. Restitution Policies on Nazi-Looted Art in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom: a Change from a Legal to a Moral Paradigm? Tabitha I

Copyright © 2018 International Cultural Property Society doi:10.1017/S0940739118000103 Restitution Policies on Nazi-Looted Art in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom: A Change from a Legal to a Moral Paradigm? Tabitha I. Oost* Abstract: This article considers the constant tension facing several national panels in their consideration of Nazi spoliation claims concerning cultural objects. It will argue that this tension results from a shift in paradigms in dealing with Nazi-related injustices—from a strictly legal paradigm to a new victim groups- oriented paradigm, where addressing and recognizing the suffering caused by the nature of past crimes is central. While these national panels originate from this new paradigm and embody the new venues found for dealing with Nazi-looted art claims, this paradigm change at the same time presents these panels with a predicament. It seems impossible to abandon the legalist paradigm completely when remedying historical injustices in the specific category of cultural objects. Through a comparison between the Dutch and United Kingdom (UK) systems, this article will illustrate from both an institutional and substantive perspective that these panels seem to oscillate between policy-based, morality-driven proceedings (new paradigm) and a legal emphasis on individual ownership issues and restitution in kind (old paradigm). This article addresses this tension in order to provide insights on how we could conceptually approach and understand current restitution cases concerning Nazi-looted art in the Netherlands and the UK. WHITE When United States forces entered the Kaiseroda salt mines near Merkers, Germany in April 1945, they discovered the vast treasure hidden there by the Reichsbank, Germany's central bank. In one cor- ner of the mines, separate from the Reichsbank's stocks of gold, cur- rency, and securities, were 207 suitcases, sacks, and boxes that, when opened, were found to contain thousands of pounds of valuable per- sonal items, including jewelry, wedding rings, watches, eyeglass frames, and gold teeth and dental fillings. A Reichsbank official captured with the Merkers treasure revealed that this separate cache represented loot that the SS had robbed from its victims at the con- centration camps and the killing centers in Poland. -

Allianz and the German Insurance Business, 1933–1945
Cambridge University Press 0521809290 - Allianz and the German Insurance Business, 1933-1945 Gerald D. Feldman Frontmatter More information Allianz and the German Insurance Business, 1933–1945 Gerald Feldman’s history of the internationally prominent insurance corporation Allianz in the Nazi era is based largely on new or previously unavailable archival sources, making this a more accurate account of Allianz and the men who directed its business than was ever before possible. Feldman takes the reader through var- ied cases of collaboration and conflict with the Nazi regime with fairness and a commitment to informed analysis, touching on issues of damages in the Pogrom of 1938, insuring facilities used in concentration camps, and the problems of denazifica- tion and restitution. The broader issues examined in this study – when cooperation with Nazi policies was compulsory and when it was complicit; the way in which profit, ideology, and opportunism played a role in corporate decision making; and the question of how Jewish insurance assets were expropriated – are particularly rel- evant today given the ongoing international debate about restitution for Holocaust survivors. This book joins a growing body of scholarship based on free access to the records of German corporations in the Nazi era. Gerald D. Feldman is Professor of History and Director of the Institute of European Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. His book, The Great Disorder (Oxford, 1993), received the DAAD Book Prize of the Association of German Studies and the Book Prize of the Conference Group for Central European History of the American Historical Association. He was an invited expert at the London Gold Conference in December 1997 and at the U.S.
