    YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). Arg. are reported in forests of southern Senegal. Ectomycorrhizas occurred in dry and wet conditions, at different soil contents of available phosphorus (0-17.5 pg g-'). U.guineensis was confined to groundwater forests. Individual trees had both ecto- and endomycorrhizas, A. africana grew scattered in semi-evergreen and riverside forests, whereas in the woodland it formed larger patches and could dominate the canopy. Eighteen putative ectomycorrhizal fungi grew under U..guineensis and thirty-one under A. africana. Only six species were common to both trees, indicating an ecological and/or taxonomical selection. The fungi belonged to the following Orders : Russulales (16), Boletales (2), (2), (1l), Agaricales (9), Cnntharellales Sclerodermatales Hymenogastrales (l), Gnutieriales (l),Aphyllophorales (1). Some of them had a wide Sudano-Zambezian or Guineo-Congolian distribution and reached their northern limit in Senegal. ABSTRACT The effects of ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea on haematological indices were investigated in albino rats using standard methods. Twenty four albino rats were randomly placed into four experimental groups (A, B, C and D) after seven days of acclimatization with six rats in each group. Animals in groups A, B, C and D were administered the ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea at the doses of 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg body weight respectively twice daily for fourteen days through oral intubation. The results showed that haemoglobin (Hb) level, Packed Cell Volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC) count and white blood cell (WBC) count increased significantly (p<0.05) and dose-dependently. The results suggest that the ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea could be effective in the management of anaemia. A compiled check list of these plants including their Latin names, families, parts used, medicinal uses, and name in different Nigerian states is the main purpose of this study. All available information about either the traditional medicinal plants or ethnobotanical surveys in Nigeria was consulted. The study showed that 325 species and 95 families of medicinal plants were recognized as being used by most of the people in Nigeria for the treatment of various common diseases. Fabaceae has the largest number of species (42), followed by Asteraceae (22), Euphorbiaceae (20), Acanthaceae (13) and Apocynaceae (12). The largest genera were Euphorbia (6 species), Cola and Hibiscus (5 species for each), Albizia, Acacia, Combretum and Ficus (4 species for each), Acalypha, Allium, Clerodendrum and Cleome (3 species for each). The study revealed that traditional medicinal practices have a wide acceptability among the Nigerian people, probably because they believe in its effectiveness. The medicinal uses are varied, and the plant parts that are used ranged from leaves, roots, stem, bark to fruits only, or a combination of two or more in a species or with those of other species.

Abstract. An annotated checklist of amphibians and reptiles from the Bijagós archipelago (Guinea-Bissau) with com- ments on the species’ distribution, systematics and natural history traits is presented here for the first time. During two field surveys 13 anurans and 17 reptile species were recorded from the archipelago of which several species represent either first records for the islands, i.e., Silurana tropicalis, Hemisus g. guineensis, Leptopelis viridis, Hemidactylus an- gulatus, Chamaeleo gracilis, Trachylepis perrotetii, Philothamnus heterodermus, Toxicodryas blandingii, Naja melanoleuca and Thelotornis kirtlandii or first country records, i.e., Amietophrynus maculatus, Ptychadena pumilio, P. bibroni, Phrynobatrachus calcaratus, P. francisci, Leptopelis bufonides, Hyperolius occidentalis, H. nitidulus, H. spatzi, Kassina senegalensis and Thrasops occidentalis. Species diversity reflects savanna and forest elements and a complete herpetofaunal checklist of the country is provided. Key words.
