BULLETIN SUBMISSION DEADLINES Bulletin Date Deadline Date May 2 April 21 May 9 April 28 May 16 May 5 From the Pastor Dear Parishioners: April is Autism Awareness Month. Enclosed elsewhere in the bulletin is the Prayer of St. Francis for Autism. April 19th is the anniversary of the bombing that occurred in Oklahoma City in 1995. April 20th is the anniversary of the Columbine High School killings in 1999, when 12 students and teachers were killed as well as dozens injured. We pray that all this senseless violence ends. On April 20th we remember servant of God, Bishop Antonio Bello who served in Italy. He dreamed of a Church that could be called “The Church of the apron.” Jesus removed his apron and took a towel and washed the feet of his disciples. Bishop Bello would often take a bus or ride a bike due to the pollution of cars. He would interact with the people on the streets and often in bars and restaurants. He was an outspoken critic of international conflicts. He died on April 20, 1993. Bishop Bello spoke out against pollution and this Tuesday, April 22nd we celebrate Earth Day which began on April 22, 1970 to make people aware how fragile our planet is, and the necessity of taking care of our common home. The Feast of St. Anselm is April 21st. He was born in England in 1033. As a young man, indifferent to religion and after years of worldly living, he had a conversion experience and entered a monastery in Normandy, where eventually he was elected Abbot. He was admired for his patience and gentleness and teaching skill. He began publishing his theological works. Against his will he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury where he had differences with the English kings who wanted power over the Church. He died in 1109. For his writings, he is called the Doctor of the Church. April 21st is also the Feast of St. Conrad of Parzham who lived from 1818-1894. He was a German Franciscan lay brother who served for over 40 years as a porter of the Capuchin Friary in Altötting, Germany. The Shrine of Our Lady of Altötting was the national shrine in Bavaria to the Blessed Mother. Because Altötting was a large and busy city, the duty of the porter was difficult. Conrad was diligent in his work and was bountiful to the poor, and eager and ready to help strangers. During his lifetime he had the ability to read hearts, and spent hours at night in prayer. He died on April 21, 1894. The Feast of St. George is on April 23rd. Pope Francis’ first name is Jorge, which is George in Argentinian. There are a lot of legends about him, but the fact is that he was a martyr who suffered at Lydda in Palestine probably before the time of Constantine. The story of St. George laying a dragon is a 12th century Italian fable. On April 24th we celebrate the Feast of St. Fidelis who lived from 1577-1622. He dropped out from his law career because of the corruption and in justice he saw with this colleagues. He became a Capuchin Franciscan Friar. He was devoted to the weak and needy. He was sent to Switzerland to preach where Protestants were strong. On the road back, he was attacked and killed. Yours in Christ, Fr. Herb In Sympathy... Please pray for the repose of the soul of the following individual whose funeral was celebrated recently: Madelyn Botello We pray for her son Robert (Cynthia), grandchildren Marisa, Isabella, and Milena, family and friends. Eternal Rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Santo Spirito in Florence: Brunelleschi, the Opera, the Quartiere and the Cantiere Submitted by Rocky Ruggiero to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History and Visual Culture In March 2017. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature)…………………………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract The church of Santo Spirito in Florence is universally accepted as one of the architectural works of Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). It is nevertheless surprising that contrary to such buildings as San Lorenzo or the Old Sacristy, the church has received relatively little scholarly attention. Most scholarship continues to rely upon the testimony of Brunelleschi’s earliest biographer, Antonio di Tuccio Manetti, to establish an administrative and artistic initiation date for the project in the middle of Brunelleschi’s career, around 1428. Through an exhaustive analysis of the biographer’s account, and subsequent comparison to the extant documentary evidence from the period, I have been able to establish that construction actually began at a considerably later date, around 1440. It is specifically during the two and half decades after Brunelleschi’s death in 1446 that very little is known about the proceedings of the project. A largely unpublished archival source which records the machinations of the Opera (works committee) of Santo Spirito from 1446-1461, sheds considerable light on the progress of construction during this period, as well as on the role of the Opera in the realization of the church.

A Film By In Association With A s we celebrate the journey of Detroit’s own Bl. Solanus Casey to Sainthood, we can each take our own personal journey of discovery: How does a humble boy from Irish Immigrant parents rise to the rare and distinguished honor of beatifcation? Who was Bernard Casey growing up? What decisions did he make in his life that set him on a path to become one of the few humans to walk the earth as a saint and to ending up as a beacon of hope and prayers for those who believe? What role did God play in each step of his remarkable pathway to sainthood? What is the historical signifcance of the Capuchin Friars? Where did they originate, and among many order, what was it about this particular one that impelled Bl. Solanus Casey to become a Capuchin-Franciscan Friar? What would life have been like for a Capuchin Friar in Detroit in the 20s, 30s and 40s? What impact did they have on the community? When specifcally did the journey to sainthood begin for Bl. Solanus Casey, or was it preordained from his birth? How is sainthood decided? What constitutes a miracle in Catholic dogma? How has the power of prayer and faith helped others? Over the course of the next year, Emmy awarded producer director Keith Famie, along with the crew at Visionalist Entertainment Productions, will dedicate their time and technical expertise to tell the story of “Blessed Casey’s Journey to Sainthood”. We will delve deep into who the man in the habit was and what this will mean to the Motor City and, now, as he is revered among the most holy of icons in the Catholic Church, to the world.

  • Heavenly Helpers of the Heart of Jesus
Live + Jesus HEAVENLY HELPERS OF THE HEART OF JESUS St. Margaret Mary and St. Padre Pio by Sr. Judith Clare October 2009 Dear Friends of the Heart of Christ, This is my favorite time of year. Not only do I love the change in seasons—the crisper and cooler air, the new colors that delight the eye, the shifts in lighting and the quieter, darker mornings here in Tyringham—I also am so grateful that the Church has given us so many wonderful examples in the lives of the saints to inspire us and help us along our daily path. This is the time of year when we celebrate the lives of Padre Pio, St. Therese, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Faustina, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Margaret Mary, the archangels and guardian angels, Our Lady of the Rosary and so many other “big names” in the heavenly realms. They are given to us as models, guides, teachers and intercessors for all our needs. Thinking about this October talk, I wanted to share with you some good thoughts from the life of St. Margaret Mary whose feast we celebrate on the 16th. Yet, I’ve been distracted somewhat in that… It started on the feast of Saint Padre Pio which happened to fall on a Wednesday this year. Wednesdays are special days here in our Tyringham Monastery when we have what we call “Early Night.” That means that we don’t have evening recreation and Night Prayer is said privately. In other words we are free and can, if we wish, go to bed early.
