Less obvious has been the extent to which the relationship between the two ideas, each charged by antebellum America with an ever-broader range of ideological functions, has itself served for some authors both as an object of inquiry and as a politico-aesthetic vocabulary. “White Paper, Black Ink, Red Letters” concerns this race-writing dialectic, and takes as its point of departure the fact that both writing and race depend on a priori notions of visibility and materiality to which each nonetheless is – or seems to be – irreducible. That is, though any given utterance of racial embodiment or alphabetic inscription becomes intelligible by its materialization as part of a field of necessarily visible signifiers (whether shapes of letters or racially encoded features of the body) the power of any such signifier to organize or regulate experience depends on its perceived connection to a separate domain of invisible meanings. iii For many nineteenth-century Americans race offered an increasingly persuasive narrative of identity at a time when the self-evidence of class, gender, and nationality as modes of affiliation seemed to be waning. -

Armor of any type interferes with a Witch Doctor’s gestures, which can cause his Rituals and Spells to fail. Spells A Witch Doctor may only choose spells from the Witch Doctor spell list, absolutely no exception can be made in this regard. His spells per day of each level are equal to half of his spells known, rounded down. A Witch Doctor must meditate for one hour everyday and speak with the spirits to retain the knowledge of his spells. Spell do not need to be memorized, every time a spell is cast the Witch Doctor may choose among his list of known spells. Harrison of the early development of Mr. Arnold Clare's mediumship, the descriptions of the séances, the revelations of Peter and the writing of this book took place during the war years 1940-41. As enemy action on London intensified, the physical séances ceased and in the autumn of 1940 were replaced by discussion circles. The first few circles took place in the author's house before a company of about twenty people. It was soon appreciated that the intelligence (known as Peter), speaking through the entranced medium, was of a high order and worthy of reporting. So these large discussion groups gave way to a small circle held in the medium's house, attended by Mr. and Mrs. Clare, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, Mrs. Edwards and the author, an occasional visitor and with Mrs. W. B. Cleveland as stenographer. The procedure at these circles would be that, in normal white light, Mr. Clare would enter into a trance state. His Guide, Peter, taking control, would discourse upon the selected topic answering all questions fluently and without hesitation. Frequently, during these sittings, the air-raid sirens would be heard and the local anti- aircraft guns would be in action. -

ANZAMEMS 2017 abstracts Catherine Abou-Nemeh Victoria University of Wellington “Opening the King’s Body: Autopsy and Anatomy in Early Modern Paris” On 1 September 1715, King Louis XIV of France died in his bed in Versailles. The next day several physicians, anatomists, and attendees assembled in the palace to carry out a post-mortem examination of the deceased monarch. In addition to the Dean of the Paris Faculty of Medicine Jean- Baptiste Doye, Guy Fagon (the king’s head physician) and Georges Mareschal (the king’s first- surgeon) led the dissection. This paper situates Louis’ autopsy in the context of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century anatomical practices in Paris. In so doing, I will assess the meaning and status of autopsy, and discuss its relation to royal power and anatomical knowledge. Anya Adair Yale University “The Post-Mortem Mobility of Dead Text: Mouvance and the Early English Legal Preface.” The introduction to a medieval law code does important rhetorical work: among other things, it must convince its audience of the justice of the laws that follow. For authority on this matter, the legal preface (like so many literary texts) often relies on the invocation of an imagined past, founding its claim on past codes, past kings, and a shared sense of stable legal history. Yet the law code itself moves through time in a very different way: in strictly legal terms, the most recent code must take precedence, overriding and erasing past laws. Laws look forward, not back. This paper explores some of the consequences of the temporal tension between prologue and laws, and traces its effects into the ways that early medieval law codes were disseminated and preserved in the manuscript record. -

A general at the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty, he was a prominent leader of the movement opposing the Manchu Qing Dynasty, and in recovering Taiwan from Dutch colonial occupation in 1661. Honored as a hero in Japan, China, and Taiwan, he has been dramatized in many plays in various theatre forms in Japan (since about 1700), China (since 1906), and Taiwan (since the 1920s). -

Social Science Studies and Experiments with Web Applications Author Dawit Bezu Mengistu Supervisor Aris Alissandrakis Exam date 30 August 2018 Subject Social Media and Web Technologies Level Master Course code 5ME11E-VT18 Abstract This thesis explores a web-based method to do studies in cultural evolution. Cu- mulative cultural evolution (CCE) is defined as social learning that allows for the accumulation of changes over time where successful modifications are maintained un- til additional change is introduced. In the past few decades, many interdisciplinary studies were conducted on cultural evolution. However, until recently most of those studies were limited to lab experiments. This thesis aims to address the limitations of the experimental methods by replicating a lab-based experiment online. A web-based application was developed and used for replicating an experiment on conformity by Solomon Asch[1951]. The developed application engages participants in an optical illusion test within different groups of social influence. The major finding of the study reveals that conformity increases on trials with higher social influence. In addition, it was also found that when the task becomes more difficult, the subject's conformity increases. These findings were also reported in the original experiment. The results of the study showed that lab-based experiments in cultural evolution studies can be replicated over the web with quantitatively similar results. PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership.
