Cartoon from Running A Muck, copyright 1978, by John Caldwell, published by Writer’s Digest Books (128 pp. $3.95) DCC Gears Friday, October 13,1978 Page 5 Up For Deaf Students by Carol Ware There are 13.5 million people in the United States custom-made rings who are deaf. 41,000 are residents of Georgia and half of those live in the Metro- Atlanta area. Many of the deaf are of college age. What happens when a deaf person wants to further his or her education? There are schools for the deaf throughout the country, but what about college? A new program has opened up at DCC this quarter for persons interested in an Associate Degree in Interpreter Train ing for the Deaf. The primary goal is to train more proficient interpreters needed in Georgia. In order for the deaf to be able to further their education, colleges must be equipped with interpreters. ITD (Interpreter Training for the Deaf) is a joint effort of DCC, the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, and the Georgia Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. Mr. Richard Durst, head of the program and a staff member of the School for the Deaf, and Mr. T.K. Garman of DCC have worked hard to get the program on the road. It is one of only four in the United States. There are between forty and forty-five students already enrolled in the ITD courses, and 140 are enrolled in sign language courses. The curriculum includes sixty hours of the major courses such as: Overview of Manual Communication, Expressive Interpreting for the Deaf I and II, and thirty hours of general studies along with ten hours of physical education. Classes are held at night at the School for the Deaf. The school is located at 890 North Indian Creek Drive. Anyone interested in a rewarding career in deaf On sale are our men’s interpretation can contact traditional Siladium® rings and Mr. Durst at 296-7101 or Mr. selected women’s 10-karat Garman at DCC.
