(2013). O meu obxectivo é avaliar a importancia da comicidade nas obras de dúas comunidades minorizadas nos Estados Unidos para producir críticas, defender a resiliencia, fomentas as relacións inter-étnicas e dar valor ás súas culturas. O meu marco teórico estará composto polos estudos de humor de Mijail Bajtín, Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, Linda Hutcheon e Siro López, entre outros. Ademais, os casos de estudo amosan unha profunda preocupación por temas de etnia, polo que incluirei Estudos multiétnicos e de Literatura comparada e un contexto sociocultural e histórico. Ante a novidades dos Estudos de videoxogos, propoño un sistema de citas para que se poida utilizar no futuro este medio. Agardo que o diálogo entre textos humorísticos de diferentes comunidades en E.E.U.U. alente máis estudos comparados de humor que muden o estereotipos dos grupos étnicos como vítimas pasivas de procesos de asimilación. 4 Resumen Los usos del humor en las culturas nativa americana y chicana: un estudio alternativo de su literatura, cine y videojuegos Esta tesis estudia el rol del humor en textos chicanos y nativos americanos contemporáneos individualmente y de forma comparativa: dos textos narrativos de Gordon Henry (1994) y Michele Serros (2000), dos poemarios de Natalie Diaz (2012) y David Tomas Martinez (2014), las películas Quinceañera (2006) y Smoke Signals (1999) y los videojuegos Never Alone (2014) y Guacamelee! (2013). Mi objetivo es evaluar la importancia de la comicidad en las obras de dos comunidades minorizadas en Estados Unidos para producir críticas, defender la resiliencia, fomentar las relaciones inter-étnicas y poner en valor sus propias culturas. Mi marco teórico está compuesto por los Estudios de humor de Mijail Bajtín, Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, Linda Hutcheon y Siro López, entre otros. Dado que los textos tratan asuntos relacionados con la etnia, incluiré Estudios multiétnicos y de Literatura comparada y una contextualización sociocultural e histórica. Ante la novedad de los Estudios de videojuegos, propongo un sistema de citas a fin de que pueda utilizarse en el futuro este medio. Espero que el diálogo entre textos humorísticos de diferentes comunidades en E.E.U.U. aliente más investigaciones comparadas sobre el humor que cambien el estereotipo de los grupos étnicas como víctimas pasivas de procesos de asimilación. 5 Abstract The Uses of Humor in Native American and Chicano/a Cultures: An Alternative Study of Their Literature, Cinema, and Video Games This dissertation studies the role of humor in contemporary Chicano/a and Native American texts individually and comparatively: two narratives by Gordon Henry (1994) and Michele Serros (2000), two books of poems by Natalie Diaz (2012) and David Tomas Martinez (2014), the films Quinceañera (2006) and Smoke Signals (1999), and the video games Never Alone (2014) and Guacamelee! (2013). My goal is to evaluate the importance of comicality in the works of two minoritized communities in the United States to criticize, support resiliency, encourage inter-ethnic relations, and celebrate their own cultures. My main theoretical frame is Humor Studies by Mikhail Bakhtin, Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, Linda Hutcheon, and Siro López, amongst others. Furthermore, these case studies are concerned with issues of ethnicity; consequently, I include Multi- Ethnic Studies and Comparative Literature, and a social, cultural, and historical contextualization of the texts for a better understanding. Due to the newness of Video Game Studies, I propose a citation system that could be used in the future for this medium. I hope that a dialogue between humorous texts from different groups in the United States will encourage comparative studies of humor and change the stereotype of ethnic communities as passive victims of assimilation processes. 6 Sinopsis A pesar de ser dos grupos nativos del continente americano, las comunidades chicanas y nativas americanas han sido objeto de siglos de colonización y actos imperialistas, que han evolucionado en actitudes neocolonialistas en la actualidad. Por tanto, sus experiencias pueden resultar representativas a la hora de estudiar la situación de grupos étnicos a nivel global. Ambos grupos han sido y siguen siendo objeto de representaciones en la cultura popular que los humillan o los victimizan: por una parte, los/as nativos/as americanos/as han sufrido la imposición de una imagen de seriedad e impasibilidad que no se corresponde con muchas de las manifestaciones culturales en las que el humor es una herramienta vital; por otro lado, los/as chicanos/as han sido repetidamente utilizados como objeto de burla. En este proyecto, estudio el papel del humor en las creaciones artísticas de estos dos mal llamados grupos minoritarios en los Estados Unidos para sobreponerse

Powell: Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation (Under the direction of Jean Dennison and Rudolf Colloredo Mansfeld) Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation, examines the ways Osage citizens—and particularly artists—engage with mainstream audiences in museums and other spaces in order to negotiate, manipulate, subvert, and sometimes sustain static notions of Indigeneity. This project interrogates some of the tactics Osage and other American Indian artists are using to imagine a stronger future, as well as the strategies mainstream museums are using to build and sustain more equitable and mutually beneficial relationships between their institutions and Indigenous communities. In addition to object-centered ethnographic research with contemporary Osage artists and Osage citizens and collections-based museum research at various museums, this dissertation is informed by three recent exhibitions featuring the work of Osage artists at the Denver Art Museum, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Sam Noble Museum at the University of Oklahoma. Drawing on methodologies of humor, autoethnography, and collaborative knowledge-production, this project strives to disrupt the hierarchal structures within academia and museums, opening space for Indigenous and aesthetic knowledges.

This course will encourage you to critically examine instances of cultural tourism and popular media stereotypes that continue to perpetuate gross misconceptions about American Indian identity. There will be no romanticizing of the “vanishing race,” but rather this course will seek to represent Indians as real flesh and blood people who have their own stories and histories.

    U.S. Society and Values, "Contemporary U.S. Literature: Multicultura...partment of State, International Information Programs, February 2000 NATIVE AMERICAN LITERATURE: REMEMBRANCE, RENEWAL By Geary Hobson In 1969, the fiction committee for the prestigious Pulitzer Prizes in literature awarded its annual honor to N. Scott Momaday, a young professor of English at Stanford University in California, for a book entitled House Made of Dawn. The fact that Momaday's novel dealt almost entirely with Native Americans did not escape the attention of the news media or of readers and scholars of contemporary literature. Neither did the author's Kiowa Indian background. As news articles pointed out, not since Oliver LaFarge received the same honor for Laughing Boy, exactly 40 years earlier, had a so-called "Indian" novel been so honored. But whereas LaFarge was a white man writing about Indians, Momaday was an Indian -- the first Native American Pulitzer laureate. That same year, 1969, another young writer, a Sioux attorney named Vine Deloria, Jr., published Custer Died For Your Sins, subtitled "an Indian Manifesto." It examined, incisively, U.S. attitudes at the time towards Native American matters, and appeared almost simultaneously with The American Indian Speaks, an anthology of writings by various promising young American Indians -- among them Simon J. Ortiz, James Welch, Phil George, Janet Campbell and Grey Cohoe, all of whom had been only fitfully published at that point. These developments that spurred renewed -- or new -- interest in contemporary Native American writing were accompanied by the appearance around that time of two works of general scholarship on the subject, Peter Farb's Man's Rise to Civilization (1968) and Dee Brown's Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (1970).

The American Indian Movement in the 1960s and 1970s The Red Power movement1 that arose in the 1960s and continued to the late 1970s may be perceived as the second wave of modern pan-Indianism 2. It differed in character from the previous phase of the modern pan-Indian crusade3 in terms of massive support, since the movement, in addition to mobilizing numerous groups of urban Native Americans hailing from different tribal backgrounds, brought about the resurgence of Indian ethnic identity and Indian cultural renewal as well .4 Under its umbrella, there emerged many native organizations devoted to address- ing the still unsolved “Indian question ”.     ENGLISH 233 Tradition and Renewal in American Indian Literature COURSE DESCRIPTION English 233 is an introduction to North American Indian verbal art. This course is designed to satisfy the General Education literary studies ("FSLT") requirement. FSLT courses are supposed to concentrate on textual interpretation; they are supposed to prompt you to analyze how meaning is (or, at least, may be) constructed by verbal artists and their audiences. Such courses are also supposed to give significant attention to how texts are created and received, to the historical and cultural contexts in which they are created and received, and to the relationship of texts to one another. In this course you will be doing all these things as you study both oral and written texts representative of emerging Native American literary tradition. You will be introduced to three interrelated kinds of "text": oral texts (in the form of videotapes of live traditional storytelling performances), ethnographic texts (in the form of transcriptions of the sorts of verbal artistry covered above), and "literary" texts (poetry and novels) written by Native Americans within the past 30 years that derive much of their authority from oral tradition. The primary focus of the course will be on analyzing the ways that meaning gets constructed in these oral and print texts. Additionally, in order to remain consistent with the objectives of the FSLT requirement, you will be expected to pay attention to some other matters that these particular texts raise and/or illustrate. These other concerns include (a) the shaping influence of various cultural and historical contexts in which representative Native American works are embedded; (b) the various literary techniques Native American writers use to carry storyteller-audience intersubjectivity over into print texts; and (c) the role that language plays as a generative, reality-inducing force in Native American cultural traditions.

From assertions of sovereign identity and engagements with entrenched cultural stereotypes to interventions in academic and critical methodologies, the word-based art of novelists, dramatists, critics, and poets such as Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Louis Owens, N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Marmon Silko, Simon Ortiz, and Thomas King, among many others, has proven vital to our understanding of North American culture as a whole.     Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Summer 2013 (6:2) Big Vibrators, Bums, and Big Explosions: Danger and Reward in Teaching Sherman Alexie RosaMaria Chacon, California State University Northridge Abstract The short stories, novels, and poetry of Native American author Sherman Alexie provide his readers with a host of controversial topics. Unafraid to tackle race or religion, Alexie also pushes sexual boundaries and the social conventions surrounding them. Nothing is sacred. He does not refrain from offering the spectacle of the homeless or alcoholic Indian, thus drawing sharp criticism from Native American scholars. And yet, this author provides the college teacher with the necessary resources in Ten Little Indians to bring his stories into the classroom: humor, satire, and clever narrative strategies. In doing so, he provides rich material to facilitate the development of critical thinking in literature classrooms. Functioning almost as an intermediary for the college teacher who dares to assign him, Alexie weaves resources for defusing potential strife and discord in the classroom directly into his literature. When students are dissatisfied with a particular college professor, the teacher can lose a promotion or even be denied tenure, and fired. These dangers are not reserved for the truly incompetent. Almost all teachers can come under fire through student complaints or evaluations. "Even the most conscientious teacher" according to Rose Weitz, "risks lawsuits (if students claim discrimination), poor student evaluations (if students find a topic or approach threatening), or even dismissal (if administrators believe a teacher has behaved improperly or has simply cost the institution too much political capital)" (227).
